I like the 3rd Gen Nano shape best. I think they are nicer than the tall skinny ones. Oh well we will just have to wait and see what apple brings us

omg that looks uggglllyyyy!!!!
hell no, a tall ass screen like that would feel horrible
but then again i thought the g3 ipod nano looked ugly when it came out

Ummmmmm.... no.

Why in hell would Apple copy off Microsoft? Unless they made it touch screen AND click wheel.
iPod_nano_4g_concept_medium.JPG

Things i live about the design:

  1. Keeps the same ipod touch/iphone look and form factor.
  2. Glowing "home" button really adds some class
  3. Front row UI is nice. As long as it has clover flow and a way to flip through your video libary
  4. wi-fi. meh. may be
I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually came to that in a few years.

I wonder if there's someone out there capable enough to do up a mockup of the supposed design using the 3G iPod nano as a base rather than the 2G?

That would at least give us an idea as to the correct gradients and curves around the edges as well as using one of the more subdued colours from the 3G - the iLounge mockup looks a little weird because of the sharp corners and the old colour.

I thought the same thing. I'm no Photoshop expert, but I'm pretty sure I at least got the new screen size close at least. Be kind as I threw this together in 5 mins.

iPod Nano Sale in Apple Store Germany

Just realized that Apple is heavily selling refurbished Nanos in their German online store:

Last time i've seen something like this was before they introduced the latest iMac, so this rumor might be true.

My mockup... using a nano3G as a base image...enjoy.
I know the click wheel is too close to the screen, but im busy and didnt have much time. this has the right screen ratio also.

Im guessing at some point the Nano will need to envolve but will be diffcult as a lot of people like the click wheel and is Apple's main ipod. But also Apple is not afraid of jumping in with new technology.

However i think the classic will retain the click wheel for those who like the traditional design.. i think Apple will keep it until flash memory approaches the classic's hard drive capacity... then at some point the dreaded decision will have to be made, when to remove the click wheel? Or maybe apple will keep the classic until most people are happy with the touch screens? The iPod touch was a big hit, now Apple needs to drop the price due to iPhone. It be very interesting to see where it will all go.:)

Apple is never going to go as low to copy microsoft.

I still can't get over how damn beautiful that Nano would be.
But I would rather see that released in the Classic, if not, then both.

And all we have to do is wait about a little over a month (beginning of September) to find out what they're going to give us this year.
One thing I love about Apple releasing their new stuff in early fall almost every year is because my birthday's at the end of September!
Perfect timing.

I did one, used the touch UI though.

I'm game for the new nano, as long as it doesn't have those sharp edges like on the 2G.

Surely the controls would be this way?

Even though I hate the idea.

Now that is a realistic iPod and what it may look like!
Except for I think it may only be turned to the side for Cover Flow and videos.
I think everything else would be regular.
And if it's going to be like how you made it, they would need to rotate the click wheel.
Nice Job!
The other guy did a good job, but he should of put in screen shots of the 3gen nano/classic instead of screen shots from the touch.

Didn't apple register a trade mark for an illuminated click wheel. The controls on the click wheel will probably rotate as you turn the ipod to watch videos.

There's no way this Zune-like appearance would actually make it out of Apple. A multi-touch nano is much more likely. I mean that thing is just down right ugly with the controls sideways when watching a video. It just feels so unbalanced.

I say keep the current form factor. Its near perfect. Just fix the tilted screens

Give is aligned screens, better battery life, same form factor, and 32GB. I'll even pay $299 for a 32GB iPod nano in the current form with better battery life.

I'll use it for as long as 3rd party batteries allow me to.

I did one, used the touch UI though.

You cant have it as wide as the old one, the rumor says that its thinner.... that one is like classic size...sorry mate, but I give it a thumbs down. It is nice other than that though.

I can't stand the "fat" model but no, don't think I'm too keen on a taller design either. My fave Nano is still the 1st gen beauty

Frankly I'd like to see the Nano go the way of the Touch but strictly for music and video only (since it's much smaller). Maybe. I'm still ultra happy with my 80gb 5.5G enough that I don't want a Touch or a Classic.

Heh, wow criticism for doing a mockup =)

Anyway, I flipped it over so that it' not a lefty model. But it doesn't say, atleast in the OP, that it would be thinner so i didn't make it. And I doubt they'd keep the original GUI of the current nano.

What's with all the hate towards the Nano 3G? I think it's the nicest Nano so far, elegant, very nice screen, very nicely built. I used to have a Nano 2G, but I like my friends' new Nanos much better.

+1

I love the fattie. I would I could make an excuse to buy one...but i really don't need it.

what need is there for a click wheel if they went touch?

A touch screen could do so much more - it could emulate a touch wheel if really wanted for starters; surely it's a better UI?

One strong flick of the finger equates a couple of circles of the touch wheel. Interestingly though I'd imagine that having a smooth non haptic screen would be a disadvantage for use without looking for exapmle whilst using sports. Perhaps an update of the speakers to have the clicked to change track/ pause/ volume perhaps.

The tough gontrols are cool.... except they aren't happening anytime soon! It took Apple 5 years to settle with the click wheel and now after 7 years, the iPod interface (with the wheel {rotate/button/scroll/click}) has grown to become a home flavor and everyone in the World characterize iPod due to the Wheel with the blue shifting bar!
No, the iPod and the nano's wheels are here to stay as long as the terms classic/HD and nano survive! What we can expect from Apple is a completely new form of 'wheel', not scroll, not click but something very different but a wheel still!

As far as the current mockups above and below, they are horrible (ones with a wheel) and will be horrible! But Apple has a way to do things and as long as SJ is around, I dont really bother about these horrid designs... :D

Can people not see that the whole line will be touch screen, and look similar?

iPod Classic will become iPod Touch, with current Hdd
iPod Touch will merge with iPod Nano, and there will be a current iPod Touch Size, and a smaller more Nano size.

Im thinking iPod Video will come back, as the touch screen Hdd based Classic.
iPod touch will stay the same, maybe be just the iPod now?
iPod Nano will be a smaller iPod Touch.
