This is a fake. Apple announced that they were going to reduce their margin in their product line to 'corner a market'. My bet is that they are moving the iPod nano to a touch platform with AppStore support. Smaller screen than the iPod Touch, probably less storage, but no click wheel.

While I agree that this one is probably fake, I can't see apple making this kind of move. Apple really likes to have product segmentation, and this would really blur the line between the nano and the touch. Also I think it would be useless to make a touch screen that small.

Also, they just completely changed the form factor of the nano from this kind of tall to short and stubby -- why would they change it back?

Nahhh...

Nahhh... I think Apple is way more creative than to just copy other MP3's out there... especially the Zune!

Personally, I think we may see something way more innovative than just another redesign of the same old thing... I'm thinking a Touch Nano is on the way. Either way... Apple needs some to do something completely different and I'm sure they are thinking the same thing. It's time to reinvent the mass market MP3.

eww

Honestly, I'd never buy an iPod nano if it looked like this. It just looks, how to say, "out of shape" imo.

Why is this story rated so negatively? When these come out most of you are going to slobber all over them and go buy one.

tactile feedback

3g nano is awesome as is. watch videos all the time. super thin.

yet, the clickwheel is so flush with the case that it is very hard to feel where it is when it is in your pocket. 2g nano was much better in this regard.

as the dude said about 40mph on a bike... touch screens suck. i often like to change tracks/volume without taking the nano out of my pocket even when walking... this shouldn't be a challenge.

I like the 3G Nano shape much better. I just wish they would add a radio tuner. Sometimes in the gym, you see something on one of the tvs you would like to hear, and it would be nice to tune to that radio frequency so you could hear it.

I think you need a shuffle.;) I use mine for anything active and since I shouldn't be looking at a screen, the simple push button interface works great. Another plus is if I drop it, lose it, run it over, get water or sweat on it, it's not a bloody fortune to get another.

I have a $500 iPhone, no way am I going to buy another iPod. :) Besides, I like to choose my music on occasion and with no display, a shuffle doesn't cut it. I bought an armband for my iPhone, no way to drop it, lose it, run it over, get sweat or water on it! :)

I always preferred the origional versions (1&2) over the fat model. But is calling it zune-like really appropriate?

bye-bye click-wheel

Remember those 2.8" screens everybody thought were for an iPhone Nano?
They fit perfectly into the current shape of the Nano.

It's a Touch Nano, (almost) same size and shape as the G3. The rumour people just don't want to give away their sources.

And the glass trackpad on the MacBook? is the screen, dummy. Rumour people just want to string it out for a couple of months...

Urgh... I just want the 2nd gen of nano's back. A small, simple ipod with a lot of flash based storage.

+1

I can't see a reason to change out my 2G nano. I only want it for music. I couldn't care less about movies on such a small screen plus where would I watch them? The only time I have time for a movie is on a plane and I can pull out the Macbook then....

I love the current nano. It feels so warm and nice to hold!

I believe that's the first time I've ever heard someone use such colorful language when describing how it feels to grip an iPod.:p

As for the rumored re-design, I dunno. Looks like a Zune knock-off, personally. I don't think there's anything wrong with the nano 3G... besides, the long screen + small click wheel looks funky and out of proportion.

My $.02

Well, I don't think this is legit, but the 3G nano looked pretty funky when I first saw it, now it's grown on me.

I could see your point about movies - after all about 1/2 hr into it, is when you are hooked and can't stop watching....

However, I had family in town and we went out to eat. We had (they said 1/2 hr) to wait over an hour before being seated. I pulled out my palm centro and started watching CNN and a couple of other shows on the sprint TV.

One thing I hate about wtching TV on the internet. Some require Windows Media Player/Silverlight - others require Real (who uses Real anymore?), some quicktime, others some other software to download. That is a real hassle.

The networks need to have one standard and everyone has to use it. Otherwise, we may never see good use of streaming TV over the internet.

Can people not see that the whole line will be touch screen, and look similar?

iPod Classic will become iPod Touch, with current Hdd
iPod Touch will merge with iPod Nano, and there will be a current iPod Touch Size, and a smaller more Nano size.

Im thinking iPod Video will come back, as the touch screen Hdd based Classic.
iPod touch will stay the same, maybe be just the iPod now?
iPod Nano will be a smaller iPod Touch.

Yeah, but considering the cost of components, making basically a small touch might be too expensive at this time.

I was thinking apple would be done with the click wheel and just implement a touch screen. It can still have the nano size but won't have any wasted space...

The artist's rendition is pretty ugly, although knowing Apple they always do something amazing.... except for the MBA:rolleyes:

Way to go Apple, go backwards instead of forward. Use the previous design & add a larger screen. Please. My wife had the older one and it was too tall. I use the current model and it is perfect. Screen could be bigger, but that's what the other ipods are for. Might as well buy a zune if you like this form factor. Apple seems to be out of ideas for form factors now. Hey Apple, how about some software feature upgrades instead. iTunes & the ipod software is tired.

I think the click wheel is on its way out bro..

Agreed. The reason why its growing taller is because they are going to give it a full length screen. The clickwheel will have to go. Its going to be a mini-touch. The design might even hint at a future mini iphone design as well.

I remember making somethign like this a while ago. It's for the "iPhone nano" however. And I did use a touchscreen + ClickWheel combo so debunk it all you want! =] It's meant to have the Click Wheel because it has a standard touchscreen, not a multitouch, but then again, I'm an idiot.

Here it is, just for viewing enjoyment. Also attached is a very old iPod concept I made from way back—before the iPhone came out.

However i think the classic will retain the click wheel for those who like the traditional design.. i think Apple will keep it until flash memory approaches the classic's hard drive capacity...

I agree...I have a hard time believing that Apple will go backwards in terms of storage capacity offerings at this time (i.e. eliminating the HDD iPod classic). I think it would be unprecedented for them - every iPod refresh that I can remember has included an increased capacity offering, either HDD or flash.

I'm actually hoping that the classic refresh (hoping there is one in September!) includes the elimination of cover flow and an increase in capacity to 200GBs.

Stupid and ugly design. When did video suddenly become so important for the iPod nano??

It's used 99.9% as music player by anyone who owns it.

Why do they need to market everything to same customers? Right now, the iPod touch is essentially the worst buy you could possibly make.

Terrible, terrible business models.
