What has Apple done lately to make you think that?
the price increase on the Mac mini. Some of the delta steps on the Mac Pro models.
This all hinges on whether Apple wants to exit the shuffle market or not. The legacy iPod volume is going down. Before the iOS era devices the iPods needed to grow for Apple's revenues to grow. Now that have "new" market Apple may be willing to give away the sub $100 MP3 player market.
No one will notice if higher revenue items replace the decrease in shuffle sales.
Apple has stepped out of the printer business, RAID box , and other markets before when they got to be too much of a commodity business.
The purely MP3 player market.... they may be ready to walk away from it at this point. (without a screen you can't really do much with a shuffle other than play audio. Even in audio can't do "Cover Flow" and other Apple audio disco. )
Rumors of the iPad at $799-$999 only to have Apple bring it out beginning at $499 in a move that totally surprised everyone?
$999 iPad? Those were ding-dong rumors by clueless analyst that couldn't analyze out of a wet paper bag.
The iPad had to cost less than a MacBook. It was going to be less than a MacBook so it couldn't be price equally or more. It was clearly aimed at netbooks (without exactly mimicking them ) so needed to go into a similar price point. There are few $799 netbooks so it would not have succeeded against them. Likewise there were numerous tablets in the pipeline (ChromeOS and others) that were already aim at that the $499-799 space. To price significantly above would have given them a window (same reason there is a shuffle to not give competitors umbrella effect). Finally, there was a huge pricing gap between the Touch and MacBook. Only the myopic couldn't see that.
There is not gap between lower end Touch and Nano. People are trying to create a gap by moving the Nano down somehow so that Touch can move down also. That's just not likely. The new low end Touch will likely be "last year's" Touch and likely not going to push it into the sub $199 range. ( They will likely trim some flash out of "last year's" model down to the 8GB just to squeeze it into $199. There is little else to throw out to radically trim costs.
Apple can also use more expensive flash to bump up the price of the new Nano so it keeps the price point.
