What this is ...

This is the Shuffle and not the Nano ... don't ask me how I know.:D

why not? they sold old "nerfed" touches alongside newer faster ones for the past year. they do this everytime a new iPhone comes out. and they even did this for several months with the 2nd-gen shuffle alongside 3rd-gen. that actually seems to be the trend of late with Apple when it comes to small consumer electronics.

(with Macs and MacBooks on the otherhand, no. new ones come out. old ones never existed, as far as the apple store is concerned).

Your referring to under the hood differences, If rumors are correct about a Retina Display and form factor changes as well, there will be no "iPod Touch Classic" siting in the apple stores next to the new ones. A clean sweep is coming.

We will just have to wait and see. : P

Since iPod Touch is the only iPod with iOS and since it already resembles iPad quite a lot.. maybe Apple is going to rename the iPod Touch as a 3,5" iPad and then introduce 7" model too. So there would be 3,5" 7" and 9,7" iPads and the 3 iPods would be old Shuffle, new Nano and the old iPod Classic.
Although I shiver to hear 3 iPad models coming, to be honest, your prediction somehow makes sense. Although I would suggest to only have two iPods: a nano (the one discussed here with the screen) and the shuffle even tinyer than the current generation. So to speak: Back to the roots, the iPods do music and nothing more. For everything else, buy an iPad of your favourite size.

I agree. This is the new Nano, the camera tech/appeal moved up hill to the Touch. The difference between paying $150 for a nano and $200 for a retina display, camera enabled Touch is silly. Why would you not go for the Touch? I think thats the point Apple is trying to make. Give everyone a fool proof reason and access to the broader offering of the itunes store (Apps, TV and such).

Because iOS messes up with long song titles...!

Sure it does a ton of cool stuff with various apps, but it just doesn't nail the basics in the same way my 4G nano does.

Has it ocurred to anyone that perhaps this thing is NEITHER the nano NOR the shuffle, but a new line of iPods on its own right? Yeah, I know, Apple never supports so many different products...

The only example I cited that was an under-the-hood only change was (incidentally enough) the iPod touch. 3GS's are still for sale alongside iPhone 4s. and the 2nd & 3rd gen shuffles co-existed for months. both examples definitely more than under-the-hood changes!

Still, like you said, have to wait & see.

But, yeah, I could see them doing a clean sweep with the touch. That does seem reasonable. Guess i was just playing devil's advocate. But if the iPod² is the new nano, no way will that be a clean sweep. i'd think they'd HAVE TO keep selling current-gen nanos side-by-side for atleast a few months just to fulfill the clickwheel-nostalgia demand (like they did with the shuffles). but with the touches, no one will miss the current design. =) keeping the old would only be a matter of maintaining a cheap entry-level model, if the new ones are too pricey.

i've been saying that for days. it looks too feature-rich and functional to be a "shuffle". and i just can't see Apple axing the iconic iPod nano. (or i just don't want to believe it). I sense sarcasm in your last line and i agree. in recent years Apple has introduced the iPhone, iPod touch, Apple TV, and the iPad... all new products which did not "replace" an existing one. it seems feasible to me that the pundits are wrong.

Best mockup I could make in the time I had, enjoy

It'll be interesting to see if these crazy rumors are true!

I KNEW this couldn't possibly be the shuffle. It seems like everyone who's been shouting "it's the new shuffle" has failed to understand the meaning of the shuffle's very name. "shuffle" implies bare minimalist functionality. with gen 1 & 2, all you could really do is play a single playlist sequentially or "shuffled". that's all really. (save for sitting there and clicking fwd fwd fwd, back back back til you find a certain song/beginning of an album). single-playlist sequential or shuffled play. (and i'm guessing "iPod sequential" was never considered as a name, lol). I suppose that changed a bit with the buttonless shuffle, using voice commands to choose a playlist (I don't have one, but that's how they work right?), but practically speaking, the shuffle is still uber-minimalist. once you have a screen and "features" and the ability to conveniently browse through your collection it is no longer a "shuffle", but rather an "iPod ???"... some other kind of iPod. (my 2 cents on that).

but the notion that this is the NEW/replacement for the clickwheel nano... ugh! i'm curious to see how awesome and wonderful it is, if i will be blown away and my mind changed. but i thought for sure this was a new breed! maybe the rumor-mongers are confused, and this will be CALLED the nano... but the current-style nano will stick around as simply "iPod" or "iPod classic". i'd love to see that. it seems risky to kill the iconic nano, even if this new thing is freakin' amazing.

when Apple announced the 3rd-gen shuffle, i remember thinking EWWWWWW...yuck! thankfully, they kept the 2nd-gen shuffles for sale for quite some time. and i remember as soon as i heard rumors that they would stop selling 2nd-gen shuffles, i ordered 2, one for myself, one for a friend, engraved. and am glad i did. they are great little shuffles.

although i've never used a 3rd-gen shuffle, i have since gotten an iPhone 3GS and find myself using the headphone clicker as a play/pause/fwd/back interface almost constantly. so perhaps the 3rd-gen shuffle isn't as bad a concept as i initially suspected it would be. (whether or not it is selling, however, i've no idea).

anyhow, the moral of this story is 2-fold...
1. if this is a REPLACEMENT for the current nano, i suspect/hope Apple will continue to sell the current-gen nanos side-by-side with the new "nano nanos" at least into early 2011, like they did with the 2nd/3rd-gen shuffle transition... to A) mitigate the shock and B) capitalize on the shock...
2. i'm guessing 2nd-gen shuffles sold rather well alongside the 3rd-gen shuffles, until they finally discontinued them for good. i doubt i was the only one who bought one out of extinction-panic. even though i may someday (perhaps even tomorrow) warm up to the concept (whatever it may be) of the new "nano nano"... something tells me a current-gen clickwheel nano may be on my list of purchases in the very near future, because i'm getting that "OMG they're killing a great product that i've always wanted" feeling ALL OVER AGAIN.

you are nothing if not the SHREWEDIST of marketeers, :apple:Apple! =) bastards are doing it to me again! =)

all that being said, still hope the rumors are wrong. if i were Steve, i'd keep the shuffle (unless it isn't profitable), introduce this "new thing", up the current-style nano to 32 GB & 64 GB, offer a high-end 128 GB touch, and--if anything oughta be axed--retire they tired-looking old classic.

most people don't need more than 64 GB or 128 GB choices anyway. audiophiles who need to carry everything around with them... i'm sorry, that is not the future. make choices. playlists. take what you need. change it up when you need to. my music collection wouldn't even fit on a 160 GB classic anymore. and the types of folks who are in the "classic niche", i suspect no size will ever be enough... 250 GB... 320 GB...? your collection will continue to outgrow it. make choices and re-sync.

not goonin' on the classic, even though that might sound harsh. i'm sure they are nice. but the classic just seems like a relic to me. the last 2 gens of nanos, on the otherhand (i say last two gens, b/c i don't think the video camera is a deal-breaker), are to me the "new classic iPod". the clickwheel is iconic. they are beautiful little devices. and to me they just scream, "the classic, fun, Apple-quality MP3 player... i.e. iPod". i guess i assumed the average consumer sees them the same way, but either i'm dead wrong or Apple is taking a HUGE risk... (or the rumors are wrong).

Classic iPod is the best iPod. Apple will never kill it off. I like having 160GBs of music with me, I consider that having "choices".

i'm not against consumers having "choices", or against apple offering them. i'm just saying i think the classic is/will be dead. that's all. "choices" will remain. but a 1.5 TB HDD-based classic (not that you suggested such a thing) will never be one of them. to you, the 160 GB classic may be the best iPod. to me, it is the last iPod i'd consider buying at this point, save for maybe the current gen shuffle. it's just a matter of opinion.

but apple cannot forever offer all choices to all people. there is such a thing as having too many choices (like carrying around 1 or 2 months worth of music on a glorified hard drive). i see far more nanos in the wild than i do classics. can't remember last time i saw a classic. so either my anecdotal experience is way off base (quite possible), or else most iPod-buying folks don't consider the classic "the best iPod".

by my logic, i think apple will kill the classic sooner or later. it is outdated both technologically and conceptually. but i could be wrong. i'm simply making (perhaps wild) predictions based on my own (flawed) evaluation of things, not trying to wish ill on anyone's favorite iPod.

I definitely don't think it is a shuffle because if they are going to put a touch screen on the device, then there is bound to be some kind of interface other than "skip song." I wouldn't necessarily rule out that they are going to cut the Shuffle line and have this new iPod replace it. Not as a new Nano, but a whole new kind of Nano?

Honestly, I'm not a fan of the Nano getting any smaller than it already is. Then again, I also hate the click wheel.

What!? Same price as current line!? That's an INCREASE in the price per gram! What a rip-off!! Shame on Apple!! :D

LOL!!!!!

Seriously I love the click wheel, please leave at least one ipod with it. I was hoping for a 32 GB (maybe even 64?) nano to replace my just recently deceased classic. I dont have anything against ipod touch, it's just not a very useful ipod (as in a device to play music on).

LONG LIVE THE CLICKWHEEL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The News On the iPod Nano Just Keeps Getting Worse...

1) No more camera
2) Small fatty design
3) No increase in capacity
4) Touch wheel gone

What 20 something genius had to go and muck with what had evolved into a beautiful little player? All they had to do was up the capacity on the existing model....but no, someone just had to go and redesign perfection into something that will be as popular as the last shuffle....

iPod Nano....RIP

Why?????????????

What has Apple done lately to make you think that? Rumors of the iPad at $799-$999 only to have Apple bring it out beginning at $499 in a move that totally surprised everyone?
Cutting the entry-level iMac a few years ago, the Mac mini recently, and nearly doing the same with the MacBook line before they decided to rebrand the 13" aluminim as Pro and keep the plastic one?

Also, the Wi-Fi iPad models are reasonably priced, but add 3G or go up in storage, and it's a bit more expensive than I'd expect.

There is no way they are going to put a iOS operating system on this thing, I look at my iPod Classic with a 2.5" screen and cannot even imagine using touch screen technology on it..let alone a 1.8" touch screen.

If it has a iOS on it, then it'll be VERY LIMITED.

This is the Shuffle and not the Nano ... don't ask me how I know.:D

My reason is because the nano prices are "supposedly" staying the same price as the current nanos therefore this 3x3 piece of crap is not the nano. The nano is something else.
