Looking at the adam website it looks like they are close to bringing it to market in Dec or Jan.

I just wonder how a small company like that can get the parts it needs produce the tablets at the price they are saying. I know what a lost leader item is but don't they are a big enough company to do that just yet.

They've been "close" to bringing it out for some time now.

I have an iPod kilo (32 GB, 3G). Here are the things for which I'm holding out to upgrade:
--Retina display
--More memory (256 MB, really, Apple)

Things I don't mind seeing:
--13.9" viewable screen, with the same 1.5 lb as the current model
--front facing but not rear facing camera
--a screen rotation lock (ha-ha)

OK -- The rationale behind the 13.9" screen for me is just to make it the same size as a letter sheet of paper. I'm not actually sure I would want such a monstrosity.

Regarding the rear facing camera, it's just that there are some places such as the gym (not while working out) where I'd want to be able to use the device without having to deal with "no camera" policies. Plus I'd feel ridiculous busting out the iPod mega to take a photo. I'm not a fan of features that feel to me like unnecessary late additions. The front facing camera would be great though for video conferencing.

I was talking about the Galaxy Tab being $399. Sorry about that.

As for SJ and no 7" I'll wait and see. SJ has changed his mind before. Like I said he'll make a 7.5" and say it's magical;)

I think he means 'iPad' instead of 'iPod'? I know a front-facing camera is almost 100% likely, which probably also means a back one is coming as well (for FaceTime).

That's true but they've applied for their FCC/CE so I believe it's finally about to drop. I will wait however to see how they fair with people and their reviews

The one thing I hate about the adam is the form factor design. I don't like the rounding for the speaker, nor do I care for the swivel camera

You need to realize that the cost of a 10" "retina" display on the ipad is not the only barrier. You would also need quite the processor to drive that (what would be ridiculous) resolution. Forget about retina display. Its not even close.

Agreed. A Retina display the size of the iPad would represent a resolution of around 2526 x 1875 pixels, which would be phenomenal, yes, but would require an intensive GPU. Not likely, given the current constraints as defined by the form factor.

Have a macbook air but am looking to the IPad to replace the several reference books and bunch of printed PDFs I often regularly carry in my bag as a medical worker... So what I want:

1. Smaller body size, less bezel, but same size screen (right now the size of the ipad is basically the size of MBA 11, I would love if they loose another .1 in and mimic the iPhone 4 design)
2. Improved dieting plan to drop it to 1lb...
3. Improved screen for reading, retina is unlikely due to cost, but still...
4. To me: camera and other gimmicks are just that... great for fun, but many people could really use this thing for work and education... not that fun is bad... ;)

Common Apple, hear my needs...

I've heard others say trim the bezel some. I'll need to look at one in the store again. If the could reduce it's footprint some that would be nice

I think they will add a tutu, magic wand, red santa hat, and a reindeer with a turkey on it's head.

Firstly if by bezel you are referring to the black border, I think it shouldn't be reduced as it serves a function (somewhere to put your thumb so that you can get good purchase on the iPad without touching the screen).

Secondly, retina display (or even a large resolution bump) is probably not going to happen because (as many have mentioned) a) price and b) the processing power required which would have negative effects on both price and battery life.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but I am just wanting to infuse your enthusiasm with a healthy dose of reality.

I will give my ideas with reasons why I believe this:

-Price of base model will stay at $500 and will be 32GB rather than 16GB as the price of flash memory goes down.

-The processor will be based on Cortex A9 still clocked at 1Ghz (rather than A8) and will use a new PowerVR solution. Rather than using a power VR SGX, it will use one up (and the current top of the line market Power VR) SGX MP multicore.

-The Retina display is an obvious given and people need to quit eating up marketing hyperbole. The "Retina display" made its way to a $230 iPod making its way to a $500 iPad is not a stretch, especially because the retina display wasnt as good. The contrast can be taken down, etc.

-Gyroscope is a given, whats a $3 motor?

-front camera at least is a given

-Oh and they will make the iPad white like ice cream.

Retina an obvious given? Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about. Do some more research.

I got this info from a very reliable source.

It came to me in a dream.

Chances of the following in the next gen iPad:

Facetime camera: 100%

slightly lighter weight: 60%

Better battery life: 90%

Faster processor: 75%

Retina Display: 0%

White/Black models: 10% (and I hope not...anodized aluminum is king)

128GB capacity: 60%

Gyroscope: 100%

increased magical ability: 45%

I personally would love to have a 7" tablet for my use.

Yes it would be nice to have a device that fits somewhere between an Ipad and the Iphone, about 5-7 inches, I just find straining my eyes a bit on the 3.9" screen a bit much unless holding it at about 2 feet.

but maybe that's just me,

Eh. To me, the 5MP camera actually seems somewhat likely, as the Galaxy Tab already has a 3.2MP and the PlayBook has a 5MP. With the coming tablet competition in early 2011, I don't see why Apple couldn't. It would also make people pretty angry if it weren't at least 5MP when the next iPhone will probably have 8MP.

Apple never go for the best, at first, with their iOS devices. With the iPhone it went from 2mp - 3.2mp - 5mp. And the iPod Touch has started with a 0.7mp one, to get started, and that will increase in the next generations.

If Apple puts a 5mp camera in iPad 2, then they could put a flash in iPad 3 or increase it to 8mp. However, if they put a 2mp in the iPad 2, then a 3.2mp in the iPad 3, then a 5mp in iPad 4, then a 8mp with flash in iPad 5; basically they can make more money.

I would love a 5mp or even 8mp camera with 1080p video recording in the iPad 2; however, I think that Apple will just stick with a decent 3.2mp with 720p video recording, for iPad 2 and a increase to 5mp and 1080p for iPad 3.

If the iPad is getting a rear camera, I would guess that it will be identical to the iPhone 4.

I think the only reason the iPod Touch has the camera that is does (optimized for HD video and not for photos) is because the device is so thin, and there is not enough room for the iPhone 4 cam to fit. This won't be a problem on the iPad.

"Retina display" is 80% marketing and 20% actual technology as is evident in the difference in the displays on iPhone and iPod touch. Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about. Do some more research.

We'll see who's right in a few months...

The only iOS device with the "full retina" display is the iPhone 4: IPS display and 960x640.

The iPod touch only has the 960x640 resolution, but no IPS display (so it turns a yellow tint at one side and blue tint at the other.).

The iPad has the IPS display, but its PPI isn't 300+ (does it need to be: no)

By my understading the "retina" display is a screen that has a PPI of 300+ at a certain distance; so the iPad will only need about 250 PPI, for us not "to distinguish pixels;" however, it will be expensive.

We'll see who's right in a few months...

It would be suicide I think if Apple put a worse rear facing camera in the iPad than it's already fitted to the iPhone4.

Given the larger screen size you would see poor quality video more easily.

I'd think the review sites would go ballistic with condemnation if the iPad got a worse camera, such as in the touch.

It would really stamp the iPad as being kept the poor second rate Apple product after the iPhone.

They would be mad if they did it.
