Everyone is talking, hardware, hardware, hardware. What about the iOS itself on the iPad 2? Every major revision of the iPhone has been accompanied by a major change to the iOS itself that moves the platform forward. We saw the large gulf that happened for 5 months last year when iPhone had 4.0 and iPad was stuck with 3.2, is that going to happen for one or another next year?

1. Will iPad 2 in spring come with iOS 5? Either: Comes with iOS 5 - unlikely, as iOS 4 for iPad has just been released; June - with the iPhone 5; or November.

2. What major features can we expect in iOS 5 on a future iPad? File system? Cloud based solution integrated throughout? A new messaging/alert system? Nobody knows. However, I would like a desktop feel - like Android 2.4 Honeycomb. Also, wireless syncing would be nice. I think multitasking and folders could use more of the screen - not just scaled iPhone versions.

3. Will iPad 2 be released in spring with a minor iOS 4.5 update and then get brought up to iOS 5 with launch of the fully new iPhone in summer or will it be the opposite, will iPad 2 leading with iOS 5 and the iPhone catching up later? Maybe. There's a good chance that they'll do this.

Thoughts?

anyway, iOS4 is good enough for now. apple isnt Microsoft releasing a newer (and crappier) OS every year. there wont even be an ipad this year as apple had clearly stated in their keynote (as i have already said) they are going back to the mac. meaning they're taking a year off iOS devices.

and again, the retina display is only that specific size that fits the iphone and ipod touch. it wont be a retina display as its just a name. like OSX Lion or Windows Vista or an "old fashioned" cheese burger. it holds no real meaning. you're not getting a 50 year old burger or a lion in a box with your computer, its a name.

so forget the hardware and software aspects your thinking will be new and revolutionary, because it wont be coming in 2011.

but this forum is for any new ipad, yet we have already pretty much discussed every possibility here and repetition is annoying. we have already had the retina display argument and the SSD capacity argument as well as the faster A4 chip argument, the material is a new one. i would think some sort of steel like the iphone4 but that's my opinion.

1. No, iPad 2 will come with 4.2. iOS update for iphone is Summer and winter for iPad.

2. No one knows.

Starting with iOS 4.2, the iPhone and iPad versions are caught up and in sync. I would say that iOS 5 will be announced in March or April (like the years before) and released around the time that iPhone 5 ships. It will be for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad at the same time.

This thread reminds me of all the excitement and hope of a year ago, with many mock ups showing the Apple Tablet running some modified OSX.

Hardly any mock ups showed just a scaled up iOS which is all we got.

I'm assuming Apple did this as it was quick and easy in case the iPad flopped.

We are seeing peoples expectations going up and up again, and I've love to think many here are right, but you know what. I think Apple are going to do as little as physically possible with the iPad2 and many little annoyances etc now are going to still be in place on the next model.

I really hope I'm wrong, But I don't think it's going to be till iPad3 or 4 they actually make any real changes.

As I say, I hope I'm wrong and they blow us away, it's just Apple's history is that of doing very little most years other than tweak.

iPad 2= Apple will add camera and they will sell millions alone by doing this. They will advertise facetime a lot with iPad 2. Hello, mommy. Crying... sob. Big ****ing deal.

iPad 3= Apple will add LTE capable iPad and they will sell millions again. They will advertise that iPad download speeds will be like 10 times faster than 3G network. Both Verizon and AT&T LTE network will be live.

It took apple 3 years to change the display on iPhone. I am sure they will change the display on next iPad while there is a lot of competition around. Wait, there isn't one. Wait, there is a galaxy Tab that is slow.

I've been hoping ever since the iPhone came out that Apple would put an IR out into their IOS devices, so we can do away with universal remotes. Put that in there and they instantly are competing with the likes of the Harnmoney One remote. Bonus points if they setup the bluetooth so it can control the ps3!

I think they're leaving this up to third-party hardware and software developers. Even though an IR port wouldn't cost much, apart from remotes, it's something that has fallen by the wayside for anything else (computers, cell phones, etc.)
