What about 50% higher resolution? That's 1536 x 1152. As long as both width and height are increased the same... it wouldn't be a problem updating the apps from iPad 1 to 2 right?

Nope, if the resolution does change it'll have to be 2048x1536; anything other than that can't be scaled like is done on the iPhone 4, which means developers would need to support two different resolutions for iPad which is messy and very unlike Apple.

what a ridiculous thread

"Retina display" is 80% marketing and 20% actual technology as is evident in the difference in the displays on iPhone and iPod touch. Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about. Do some more research.

The term retina display is 100% a marketing term. it was invented for the iphone4. It did not exist prior to the iphone4, and actually means nothing. You could call it the dog poop display and it would mean as much.

This is a ridiculous thread. What do I wish for the ipad. Well I want it to connect directly with Santa at the north pole, and give a blow job with the right app. How about lets not live in fantasy land. Guessing what might be in generation 100 of the ipad is a waste.

why!!! just throw in a new model like an iPad HD with 720p. why would you need a 1080p movie on the freakin iPad??? that's something for TVs guys! and besides, the apple TV can only support up to 720p so it would defeat the purpose.

And this is only for a future idea f an iPad and not for only the retina display. so before you go arround being an @$$ like that, take 5 and listen to iTunes.

ON topic IS fantasy you dope,

I have a feeling that the iPad is going to fall into the "lets adopt the features of the iPhone" category much like the iPod Touch. iPhone is released in the summer while the iPad waits to be updated with the new features that debuted with the iPhone. It's one of the reasons why I sold my iPad when I got the IP4. It lacked features the IP4 had while 4.2 finally brought the iPad many features of the IP4 however it was several months later. From owning an iPad for a few months I know the screen size/iWork does make it a different device in terms of usability than the iPhone but I'm hoping it starts to get more unique features instead of just following the iPhone (or at least make it more powerful).

Sold my iPad for more than I bought it for so I will wait and see what apple does with the 2nd gen and perhaps become an iPad owner again. Even if it does just follow the iPhone I won't rule it out as a purchase.

I don't quite agree. As long as height and width are increased proportionally it doesn't matter if it's 50% or 100% scaling. And why does it have to be like the iPhone 4? This is iPad.

Take playing back video on a computer for instance. One can scale it in different sizes. Should be the same thing with apps.

Next Gen iPad

My expectations:

  • Lighter
  • Cameras (I want the big Star Walk)
  • SD Card Slot
  • Higher resolution
  • GPS with 3g or 4g but no WiFi only version
  • Better WiFi network integration for file sharing and printing to any connected printer

And one more thing...it hovers and stays in your general area so you can summon it as needed since it does not fit in your pockets.

It does not really work like that.

Well, it does if they are vector graphics, as they are just mathematical points (like a modern typeface) and it will scale smoothy to anything.

If it's bitmapped it does not work like that.

If I give you a sheet of paper with 20 squares in each direction and tell you to draw a lovely image. You can only put 1 colour in each of the 20 x 20 box's.

Ok, it looks super.

Now I try and stretch that image you made to cover 25 box's.

How will it work?

Only 1 colour can be in each box remember.

Some box's will have 2 of the same colour side by side, others will just have to one colour, as you cant make 20 box's smoothy change into 25 box's with the same image.

Using clever software you can sort of do it, but it ends up with a fuzzy image as you are smearing an image across the wrong number of points.

If you pixel double, so I give you 40 x 40 box's then that's easy as you just put two dots the same next to each other so you end up with an exact, just a little blocky version of the original, but it's still clear and sharp.

Features that will Probably be in the next iPad

Front AND back cameras (Apple is really milking the Facetime thing)
More RAM and better processor (To be able to run a series of iOS')
Same or reduced Price I would guess, maybe a bit lower (to make it more affordable for parents to buy this thing for their kids for birthday, christmas etc.)

Features that WON'T be in

Retina (Too expensive)
Extremely Better Battery (There may be a "Better" battery, but not by much)

If the resolution is anything but an increment of its original resolution when scaling graphic issues will be encountered.

The simplest explanation is:

Say you've got a control with uneven dimensions, say 101x101 pixels, scale it 50% you get 151.5x151.5 pixels which just can't happen. The only possible way they could change the resolution is to get developers to support two different resolutions which is much more work and quite messy imo, if they do anything to the iPad, they'll do it like the iPhone.

plz stop calling it the Retina display, its beginning to be sort of a bother to me. as said before by someone, retina means nothing. it's like a Pentium or Centrino. its a name. Retina is no more than a gimmick from apple describing that it looks vibrant and alive on our retinas. only reason ipod touch has it is that its pretty much the same screen.

Steve Jobs invented Retina Display. He even patented it, actually. Therefore, no further handheld devices will be able to have resolutions at, or greater than, the human retina can handle or fierce legal battles will ensue. He emailed me about this, along with the date the iPad2 is coming out. He made me promise I wouldn't tell anyone or he would sue me. :(

Tbh i dont expect to see a new ipad in 2011 as apple's last release suggests "back to the mac" so i'd hold off on all of this.

I think its to soon for a update. Apple needs to give us some time to enjoy the device we have now. 1.5 year update would be better. I think the update will be minimal at best. Same for the iPhone 4 its just to good at the moment for an update. I see it lasting another year with maybe a verizon iphone.

My wishes include
Sd-card
faster processor
more ram

In all seriousness, what does the iPad need to keep it ahead of the competition and will Apple view it that way or will Apple just be Apple, what each of us thinks it should have or not, is mostly personal, its done ok so far but I hope Apple listens to its present and future customers, it will get new things, mods and updates but not all, just my thoughts.

You are making an assumption from terminology that is wrong. There is no scaling done. what they are doing with the new iPhone to make it fast and easy is pixel doubling.
that's how I understand it.

no you wont ever see a touchscreen osx devise .see keynote
steve jobs said himself that they are hard to use and uncomfortable.

I believe Steve was talking about a touchscreen Mac because you would be holding your arm up and it would be uncomfortable after a short while. That is the opposite of the iPad where you hold it down lower so you're not having to hold your arms up the entire time you're using it.

I for one think we will eventually see a iPad-like device that runs full Mac OSX. I definitely think there is a market for it. Basically a device the size of the display (including bezel) on the 13" MacBooks. With a lot of the multitouch components that Apple is putting into Lion, I wouldn't think it's too far off (another year or two).

I disagree. With virtually every company that makes computer like devices coming out with a tablet, it is necessary for Apple to refresh the iPad on a frequent basis, much like they do with the iPhone. I agree that they'll probably hold some features back for future releases, but they still need to stay competitive. After all, they were the ones who (finally) popularized the tablet market; I can't see them taking a step back.

they dont need to take a step back or forward as there is no market. the sony 7 inch tablet is a joke! and if i haven't even heard of the existence of any others then there's pretty much no reason to make any updates for a while. and as with the previous keynote said, "back to the mac" can only really mean one thing. im just saying its kind of at a standstill for the moment.

All of your expectations are too high for next iPad. It took apple three years to change resolution on their iPhone. iPad display might get outdated, but it has not been at all. Apple is still an only player in Tablet market compare to anyone. I expect camera, more ram, gyroscope with faster processor. If you are asking for more, then you are crazy.

How else could you call it?
The very-crystal-clear-high-resolution display?
Theres a reason why names are given :p

I think people are just basing things on what is out now, what people don't seem to realise is that there may be a brand new feature that they could be bringing out on it that no one knows of, this is Apple after all.
I believe there may be a different kind of retina display to justify the screen, but it won't be the retina display itself, something new and unique.

Also, the main thing i'm hoping for is an extra dock so i can rest it on its side when i've put it on a keyboard dock.
The others are common sense, faster A4, more memory, etc.

My main list is:
128GB size option
USB Port
SD Card Slot
Facetime Camera
Lighter
Extra Dock for landscape docking.
Clearer resolution for iphone/ipod touch apps, like how the jailbroken app, Retinapad has done.

A lot of loops and hype stuff I read here!

Attention and be quiet for a moment! The HARDLINER speaks!

Thank you!

The most important question is, does anybody know which kind of material Apple will use for the iPad 2? Since it will be lighter, I hope won't cum in a crappy plastic case.

So, whats you thought on this, except the loops and hypes you are all sissying about?

Everyone is talking, hardware, hardware, hardware. What about the iOS itself on the iPad 2? Every major revision of the iPhone has been accompanied by a major change to the iOS itself that moves the platform forward. We saw the large gulf that happened for 5 months last year when iPhone had 4.0 and iPad was stuck with 3.2, is that going to happen for one or another next year?

1. Will iPad 2 in spring come with iOS 5?

2. What major features can we expect in iOS 5 on a future iPad? File system? Cloud based solution integrated throughout? A new messaging/alert system?

3. Will iPad 2 be released in spring with a minor iOS 4.5 update and then get brought up to iOS 5 with launch of the fully new iPhone in summer or will it be the opposite, will iPad 2 leading with iOS 5 and the iPhone catching up later?

Thoughts?
