I'm still very happy with my iPad 2... this thing clearly can still sustain for one more year (I got it in April).

My bet is on Apple maintaining the release schedule of one new iPad per year. They don't need anything else to stay ahead of the competition and maximize profit. Why design an iPad2 S only to release an iPad 3 months later. It makes no business sense because the R&D, design, and manufacturing don't have enough time to reach their full potential in a matter of months.

This model changes of course if Apple plans to release an iPad 3 alongside a premium iPad but I think Apple would first maintain the iPad 2 alongside an iPad 3 like they're doing with the iPhone 4S, 4 and 3GS before developing two new models in one year.

My bet is iPad 3 will come out Q3 2012 and be seen as "late" but who cares because Apple are in no hurry since they have market dominance. But how will iPhone 5 play in to it - since the same timeframe would align there...

I bought the iPad 2 because I loved my iPad 1 so much and got caught up in the excitement. Won't make that mistake again. The iPad 2 is better, but I never use the camera and to be frank the speed differences are not that big in real use IMHO.

I will upgrade when there is a retina display.

As a photographer, I'm waiting for an iPad that is capable of running Aperture for iOS and with enough resolution to display stunning photos to clients on the go. The next iPad may seem like the one to deliver if it comes with an A6 chip and retina display.

iPad is shifting from a consumption device to also one of content creation. The timing is ripe for an iPad 3 capable of doing just that.

I anticipate that the iPad 2 will continue to be sold in 2012 at a lower price alongside the iPad 3. Apple may be a secretive company, but they're also quite predictable. This model has been followed with the iPhone and the iPad is matching that trend.

So Apple would release a new iPad in March be sold out of it for a few months and then release another new one before there is any kind of steady stock on the first new one?

No way. iPad 2 is way better. Flat = win. Just like iPhone 4 and 4S are *WAY*, *WAAAAAY* better than 3G and 3GS.

They can make it flat, its just that the iPad 2 version with all the visible holes, buttons, strange edges and extrusions make it look crap in comparison.

If Siri is pushed as a feature for this then they're going to need to upgrade the microphone situation. Second microphone for noise cancelation.

It'd be awesome if it got a decent back camera this time around.

I seriously hope they don't call it the iPad 2s though. Appending the 'S' is a silly naming scheme. They should have never done it for the iPhone. Quite honestly they should stop doing numbers all together. Just name mobile product like Macs.

And the mockups begin...

Yes but don't forget new hardware (A5) begets new software features albeit at a slower pace. During the last keynote they mentioned the A5 has an image signal processor for Face Detection, auto White Balance and Stabilization amongst other things. You haven't seen the full power of your A5 yet perhaps.

i really do hope iPad3 gets retina display, but as the same time, i really don't want a decrease in battery life. maybe difficult especially if they are trying to make the device thinner.

I can't agree with this assessment. No way will they release an update to the iPad2 in March or April and then release another iPad 3 in October. It just won't happen. This is the same prediction that was made for this year. Instead, they released a new iPad2 and no new one in Oct.
If anything, there will be nothing released in April and we will see the iPad join the iPhone and iPod and other iProducts in the October release. Any announcement made earlier in the year will be software related, iLife, iCloud and MacOS preview before more is announced or released at WWDC.

Same old regurgitated news story that basically confirms no-one-knows-nuffink'.

That said, I'm firmly in the camp that is skeptical that we'll see retina iPads so soon. Yeah yeah, the tech exists, but in the volume Apple need by March/April?Really? That's not even bringing price into the discussion, think they'd struggle to maintain the current pricing scheme for such a display at this stage.

I actually wouldn't mind a 2S to come along, very happy with my iPad2 - its plenty fast enough right now, I NEVER use the awful cameras - and would happily skip a 2S, the only thing that'd motivate me to upgrade would be a retina display.

Don't know how I feel about a thinner iPad -- it's already thin enough. *ducks to avoid flying objects*

I kind of agree with that, I don't really think it needs to be thinner. Lighter wouldn't hurt though, but basically that comes down to reducing either the battery size or front glass thickness, both of which are tricky to do.

It does make sense that Apple would want to get the iPad onto a release schedule optimized for the holidays, September or so. And I also don't see Apple releasing 2 iPads 6 months apart, so that leaves them in a tricky spot. A year and a half is too long, but a year (March-April) doesn't give them time for a full product revision (double res screen and GPU to drive it). I also don't see an iPad 4S with just faster CPU/GPU or more RAM. For one thing, the iPad 2 is already pretty fast, and Apple doesn't want to fragment the line any more than is necessary.

I wouldn't rule out a smaller (7"-8" @ 1024x768) and cheaper ($350-400) iPad model in March-April though.

FaceTime / Skype is awesome on the iPad 2. I used it several times on the dinner table for video chatting between my brother in Japan and all of my family members at home.

It's THE best device for a video call. I can't imagine doing that on my iPhone with its small screen, and putting my full fledged laptop on the dinner table is really stupid.

Also, the iPad 1 is really heavy.

I think they are doing it to help line put everything in a consistant update cycle. Also, the update cycle will be right before the holiday season. Before the iPhone 4S, I would never have asked for an iPhone for Christmas because it would have been half a year old already. Same with the iPad, except older than half a year! So by moving their update cycles closer to holiday season, I think it could potentially help their sales.

I disagree. I like the feel of the iPhone 3GS better because it wasn't flat. My hands aren't flat, so why would I want to hold something flat and boxy? It is more comfortable to hold something that conforms to the shape of your hand. Another reason why I was disappointed there was no redesigned iPhone.

Either the component suppliers can produce an appropriate display, or they cannot do it. If they can do it for the iPod touch 4G and the iPhone 4G(S), then i see not a big problem, except the price, for the iPad 3 display.

Not a chance. Terrible prediction. Releasing an upgraded 2 and the suggested features are "thinner" and better battery life? please
