Dam you, i am drooling just imagining those specks on a new white iPad 3... drooooool i tell you. :D

I'm sure all this iPad speculation will be about as accurate as the speculation on the iPhone 5 last month.

I don't see Apple moving to a q3/q4 schedule for the iPad. Surely that was the whole point of moving the iPhone schedule, means every 6 months Apple will have something big to shout about. Otherwise, there'd be a 12 month barren period in between, interspersed with silent speed bumps and storage upgrades to iMacs and MacBooks (although admittedly iMac and mbp redesigns are expected next year).

Sure, theyd miss the Xmas rush, but Apple are one of the few companies that don't need Xmas for great sales.

Does this mean everyone has decided the current iPad 2 is the "real" iPad 2? I remember some debate about that earlier this year.

Isn't this the same exact rumor from a year ago?

And once again these 'sources' are throwing the same exact BS they tried this year. Wasn't the iPad 3 'supposed' to come out in September? What happened to that? I swear some people just start rumors to feel important.

I'm pleased to see that I'm not the only one to remember that this rumor really seems to be a ghost of Christmas past. This is exactly what was being said a year ago, with many of the same arguments floating around then.

If Siri is pushed as a feature for this then they're going to need to upgrade the microphone situation. Second microphone for noise cancelation.

It'd be awesome if it got a decent back camera this time around.

I seriously hope they don't call it the iPad 2s though. Appending the 'S' is a silly naming scheme. They should have never done it for the iPhone. Quite honestly they should stop doing numbers all together. Just name mobile product like Macs.

I'm not sure why the iPad would need a microphone upgrade. I used to use the old Siri app on my iPad, and it did a phenomenal job of understanding what I had to say. So, while a mic upgrade might make it even better, empirical evidence suggests that the existing hardware should be able to handle it just fine...

Digitimes has been particularly prolific in the past year with their rumors, but have become particularly spotty in their accuracy. While plans could have obviously changed, their previous iPad 3 report claimed a Fall 2011 launch. So, take this new report with some skepticism.

Way back when, before all the iOS hoopla, did digitimes ever report on just Apple computers? Weren't they way off back then too? or am I thinking of a different publication. Any old timers help me out?

4g LTE?

My guess is an iPad 3 IS released in March, however an LTE version will be released with an iPhone 5 LTE product as well come September/October time frame. If this is the case, the iPad 3 can become.... you guessed it iPad 3s :D

But I agree: it seems to soon for the retina display I dream of. AND for the GPU/RAM to drive such a thing! ... Huge challenges, I’d say.

Let us assume they use a 2048x1536 pixels display in the iPad 3. Each pixel has a color depth of 8 bits per channel (Alpha, Red, Green, Blue), so that one ARGB pixel requires 32 Bit or 4 Bytes of video memory.

2048 pixels x 1536 pixels x 4 bytes = 12582912 bytes
or
12 MByte

CoreGraphics/Quartz uses 2 buffers, so:
12 MByte x 2 buffers = 24 MByte (required) video memory

I would not call this a problem.

It's just as likely that it's Apple's competitors or people shorting the stock that spread these rumours that always seem to turn out way off base and forgotten. I mean, anything to keep people waiting for the "real" iPad 3, not that fake one that actually comes out, right?

Although I suppose for the iPad's competitors your "to feel important" comment is kind of accurate.

it seems as if Apple's new/big products have been delayed lately.

i.e.
MacBook Pro re-designs
iPhone 4S launch date
iTunes Match
Mac App Store Sandboxing
Mac Pro updates
all iPods

wtff? laggin...

The fact that we're talking about 2 rumors (A product after a product that's not even out yet. . .) in one article is so comical. Sad, but it's funny.

Just give me the Retina Display for the iPad and I'm buying it.

Hmm instead of releasing a slightly updated iPad in March why not just wait till Q3 for the fully new one.

Simple - companies can't turn on a dime. Right now, supposedly all of Apple's manufacturing partners are having trouble producing the big "retina" displays. If Apple isn't positive it can get those displays by fall, they could very well choose to go to a contingency plan like the rumor suggests. That way, if fall rolls around and they still can't get the displays... they're not stuck with absolutely no iPad releases in 2012.

The catch is that according to their sources, this new iPad product is not seen by Apple as an iPad 3, but instead an upgraded iPad 2. Instead they say "the real iPad 3" won't be launched until the 3rd quarter of 2012 at the earliest.

they said the same thing last year about this years iPad release and look what didn't happen

I think they are doing it to help line put everything in a consistant update cycle. Also, the update cycle will be right before the holiday season. Before the iPhone 4S, I would never have asked for an iPhone for Christmas because it would have been half a year old already. Same with the iPad, except older than half a year! So by moving their update cycles closer to holiday season, I think it could potentially help their sales.

I disagree. I like the feel of the iPhone 3GS better because it wasn't flat. My hands aren't flat, so why would I want to hold something flat and boxy? It is more comfortable to hold something that conforms to the shape of your hand. Another reason why I was disappointed there was no redesigned iPhone.
Yes, I'm sure your hand can fully cover the back of the iPad. /s

Digitimes has been particularly prolific in the past year with their rumors, but have become particularly spotty in their accuracy.

Then why do you keep posting their rumors?

I believe quad-core ARM CPUs are still at its infamy. Quad-core Snapdragon SOCs won't be released until Q2-Q3 2012. The iPad 2 will probably get a slightly over clocked A5 with an improved GPU.

Yes, I know the iPad 2 does not use Snapdragon.
