One very small change I would love to see in any future iPad would involve flattening out the space where the dock connecter is placed. The taper on the edge of the iPad 2 makes it a challenge sometimes to get that plug in.

I know that changes some accesory dock specs, but I really think it would be a worthwhile change.

we do not need an ipad 2s with the same crappy low rez screen.. apple is starting to goof up alot of stuff...

Ha, my comment is +23...I'm popular! :D

-1 for pointing it out.

I keed, I keed :D

While I agree a resolution bump would be outstanding (and what I'll probably wait for), the current display isn't really "low resolution", it's pretty much what most of us have been using on our desktop and notebooks for years and nobody really even discussed (or seemed to care) PPI until the iPhone4.

I don't believe Apple will continue with the numbering scheme for the iPad.

The next iPad will simply be called the iPad.

They do not do this with other products (either consumer or professional), with the only exception being the iPhone and even then the numbering originally represented the type of network it supported (there was never an iPhone 2).

Apple will not be releasing two different iPads next year. Expect a new model in the Spring (but I wouldn't be surprised if they held off on the next model until the Fall, because they are selling quite well and there doesn't appear to be any competion on the horizon).

What to do, what to do? I've got iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. I think I'll wait another 1.5 years for iPad 3 with retina. Siri is great but not a huge motivator to get it for the iPad. I use it primarily to dictate my speech for text messages... something I don't think I'll be doing much with an iPad. That being said, I trust that iPad 2S will be incredible and many millions will have fun with it. I wish them well and delight with them when it ships! :)

I think they will. They will most likely sell the iPad 2 as well but at a lower price, so they will need a moniker to differentiate between them:

Apple sales associate: "Great! You want an iPad. Were you wanting the iPad 2 or the iPad 2S?"

It only makes sense that they begin selling more than one model. There are people on a budget or new to tablets or new to Apple. Sort of a "stick-the-toe-in-the-water" approach. It gets them in the door and perhaps later, they'll buy the top of the line. That's what I do now (well except for the 3G radio part in the iPad. I did it for iPad 1 and used it for 2 different months in the whole year. Decided it wasn't worth the extra scratch for that feature)... so I only got the wi-fi model on iPad 2. 64 GBs though! Love the space.

If you take that price of iPhone's 64GB flash module, you'll realize that 128GB iPad is not a very likely to be introduced within next year (at least).
It would be insanely expensive or less profitable. Apple wouldn't risk neither.

The original iPad was just "iPad" They need to distinguish one another.

when the iPad came out, people said a new one will be out in fall 2010 with a retina display. FAIL. When (or before) the iPad 2 came out, people said the iPad 3 will come out in fall 2011 with a retina display. FAIL. Now, they are already saying the iPad 3 will come out in 2011 with a minor refresh? PROJECTED FAIL

Seriously, what now is needed on the iPad 2 that is not a major redesign? only a camera, err display? Over clock the A5? No, over clocking the A5 won't be needed. I think if they use the existing iPad 2 design, but with a quad core A6, 1GB RAM(512MB is still welcome), hi-res display, maybe the 260 ppi 'retina' for tablets and a better camera will all be amazing. 4G or extra storage doesn't matter for me as I don't use that much storage, and 4G is not available in my country. Heck, Zambia hasn't even perfected their 3G network.

iPad 2 Refresh =

Faster processor
Sizes 32/64/128GB
Much better camera
Bluetooth 4.0
Siri
Q1 2012

iPad 3 =

Quad Core processor
Retina Display
LTE World Cellular
Every model has Cellular
2013

I'd actually be pretty happy with a $499 32GB, with a slightly upgraded proc, better camera, and Siri. I bought the $599 32GB 1st gen, but I'm really not up for another $600 tablet. I kinda find it silly and disappointing that for $499 they still give you only 16GB.

The doc connectors on iphone, ipad and all products are a pain .

They all break after only a short while at the cable to plug entrance, especially in a car.

The straight out position isn't always ideal, so a better charging plug (maybe swivel) would be a good improvement?

Never experienced such problem on any of my 6 Apple devices

oh yet another super vague and practically useless rumour. I could see this happening, actually, but like a few of the recent rumours, it seems baseless. Now, yes, I realize that this site is mac "rumours" but this seems purely speculative, with no actual basis.

Oh well. Either way, we'll see what happens. I could use an updated iPad. My iPad 1 is great, but iOS 5 makes it slow, and even worse, quite unstable (Safari, I'm looking at you).

Somebody makes a 90 degree dock/cable, don't recall, but I've seen them on Fleabay. It at least makes it sit nice[r] in a cupholder :)

Also the iPhone needs to rotate 180 like the iPad, then you could run it upside down (I do that with the Pad on a simple stand and run the cable out the "top").

Uh-oh. The iPad 2S???? LOL.

Seriously tho. I don't care what they call it, whatever the next ipad update is...I am getting one.

I'm sure all this iPad speculation will be about as accurate as the speculation on the iPhone 5 last month.

I don't give any credit to any rumors on new Apple products - what seams consistent is one per year. I was actually planning to switch early if iPhone 5 came out - but I will wait.

The worst rumors of all are the MacBook AIR Arm ones - give me a break on that - I personally would love to see iMacPad - OS X power tablet with lower power Ivy Bridge CPU.

When will people realize that all of these idiotic "Release one day and then release another a few months later" rumors are absolutely bogus?

Do people not realize that we have heard this exact rumor for the last 4-5 total Apple products dealing with the iPhone & iPad?

Actually for size of iPad - the resolution is find - maybe I just getting older

As far as goofing up a lot of stuff - it matter of respective - rumors are just desired - yes it would be nice to have the rumor of iPhone 5 now - but reality of production of product is likely harder than that

Even though the 2010 MBA I am typing this on - suits my need - I glad they finally went Sandy Bridge - I would say not going Ivy Bridge next year would be a goof up. It fits perfectly in rumor MBA like designs planned.

I guess some people think Apple is like Android companies. I think once a year makes better products - as a developer myself - this is most reliable way to handle it.

:( Me want retina iPad. NOW!

But why should Apple hurry? There's no competition. Unless Amazon lights a Fire under them...

I am buying 30 cables at a time and have gone through 10 of them on just my iphone.

Maybe yours don't get moved lot and maybe I am not super careful? Mine are in the car , on my desk in another car. etc. etc.

Also, I forgot to mention that I think they need to make one side raised on the plug so we know where the front is, instead of the screen print that wears off.

That way one can plug things in without looking.

In my humble opinion, the iPad 3 will look essentially identical to the iPad 2, except for the following:

1) New "A6" CPU/GPU with lower power consumption and 1 GB of RAM.
2) 1280x960 IPS touchscreen display.
3) Better quality back camera--possibly in the four-megapixel range.
4) Dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi support.
5) Maybe LTE support if Apple can get an integrated cellphone chipset based on new Broadcom or Qualcomm design with low power consumption.

iPad 2s, where the s is for Siri
Minor update in hardware, what's not to understand?
IPhone 4s, where s is for Siri
Minor update in hardware...

They can keep the form factor of the 2, as long as they bump some key areas:

-A6
-1gb ram (or more)
-HIGHER SCREEN RESOLUTION
-Thunderbolt/30-pin dock connector hybrid (The one from the patent). I'm actually really disappointed they didn't include thunderbolt on the 4s....with all the hype behind it and the technology in place to implement it, even Apple has yet to support thunderbolt in their devices.
