For what it's worth, today's "discoveries" by 9to5mac in iOS 7 code didn't really say anything to begin with. I've watched a few WWDC 2013 session videos, I remember an Apple engineer talking about how they were changing the entire naming/organization system for artwork in iOS7, getting rid of the current naming system of "2x" for retina artwork. So not finding any artwork with the "2x" name doesn't mean anything given that Apple changed that all in iOS 7.

This seems very much like a leak by Apple to put an end to that rumor quickly.

Concerning this matter, what we've read so far is that iPad mini is going to have a retina display, unless it won't. Half of the articles confirm it, while the other half deny it. I'm wondering if anybody knows the difference between rumors and blind guessing...

When WSJ says, "people familiar with the matter", that means "Apple".

This is a clear message from Apple to kill the rumors started today that the next Mini would not have retina. They don't want people rushing out to buy Nexus 7 thinking retina isn't coming.

I realize that if it's coming from the WSJ that it's pretty certain this is Apple's doing. But a serious question: why doesn't Apple just come out then and say it themselves? If they really want to make sure people don't buy a Nexus 7, I'd think a statement on the record saying the mini is getting Retina would send a clearer message — most people reading that article probably aren't going to see this as being a deliberate leak, but just more conflicting rumors.

If iPad Mini goes Retina, there will be a serious dip in regular iPad sale.

There already was when the iPad mini came out regardless of retina or not....

Its entirely possible that they could keep a non-retina model going as a cheaper option...

Though that could mean they push the price up for the retina model.

IPad Mini
Non retina $329
Retina $399

Regular iPad
Non Retina $399
Retina $499

I can't see Apple keeping the iPad 2 with 30 pin connector. My guess is full size iPad will be retina only, and mini will have both non-retina and retina. It would be nice if the non-retina mini could drop in price, but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't.

Nexus 7: FullHD
Next Kindle Fire 7 announced with FullHD screen and Snapdragon800
Most 8/9" Chinese tablets on the market today: FullHD screen

Apple can't compete without a retina screen, Samsung and the others companies will be too glad using this argument to prove how better their tablets are.
However Apple has to keep in mind that a battery life is still one of the most important elements, helping them to break away for the concurrency.
So a thicker battery would be appropriate.

They could simply replace the iPad 2 with just the new 'iPad' as opposed to ' iPad Retina' and simply update it to the A6 rather than a7, bit of extra memory and give it lightning port. Apple likes recycling existing components.

The iPad 2 still sells, clearly there is a market for a cheaper 9.7" iPad.

I don't think rumours affect sales that much.
Right now the Nexus 7 is up against the iPad Mini which doesn't have a high resolution screen. That is the fact until Apple changes it.

Rumours directly affect sales. Think about it, if you heard the next model has better specs, would you still rush and buy the current model?

.

But Samsung haven't released a retina tablet outside of the Nexus 10 themselves yet, and given the terrible reviews the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 " is reciving, I don't think anyone is going to be worried......

Oh and Nexus 7 HD versus iPad Mini already played out - and the mini won regardless of lesser specs on paper. Until 'specs' automatically equate to more sales - that argument has litte merit.

It will come with a Retina display on one side and a non-retina display on the other!

"Introducing the New iPad Mini. Twice the displays, twice the possibilities."

...and triple the price. Nexus 7 with better display will only go up in price for about 30 dollars....but iPad mini with retina would be like 100 dollars more.....phil schiler "and that is agressive price"....Yeah right Phil.

When the iPad gained Retina display...guess how much the price went up by.

Nexus 7 battery life is C-R-A-P

Another drawback: In my test, the new Nexus 7′s battery life was underwhelming. Compared with the same battery test of the iPad Mini and first Nexus 7, it fell short at just six hours; the others clocked in at 10 hours and 27 minutes and 10 hours and 44 minutes, respectively. Google claims the battery life can last over nine hours, but the company tests it in Airplane mode (Internet connection off), with screen brightness set to 44% while playing video. I keep Wi-Fi on in the background and screen brightness at 75% while playing video.

Thank god for Nexus 7....now Apple is in more pressure to release better screen. They may or may not, but if not for new nexus 7 with fullhd display, i am sure Apple would still use subpar resolution on ipad mini while charging extra premium price for it.

Maybe Apple is just not as good as Google (or Asus) then. If Asus can make retina display on nexus 7 with more ram, better proc and more ram for 100 dollars less, and apple can not do that, then Asus have better engineers.

And flash storage is so cheap this days, make 32GB a entry level.

iPad Mini with Retina and a new iPhone with a bigger display, that would be awesome and Apple will have my money.

Else, I wait for the Nexus (5) and get a Nexus 7.

But the mini was brand new product. And the 1st gen nexus 7 wasn't that great. From every review I've read the 2nd gen nexus is a much improved product. And the Galaxy tab doesn't matter, but the Note does and that won't have a crappy display. If there is no retina mini this holiday season I do think the nexus 7 and new Kindle's will snag customers that would have bought a mini.

I'm confident they will get the retina display in the next iPad mini. Apple knows how bad it would make them look to come out with another non-retina version after Google launched the next Nexus 7 with 1920x1200. Anyway, people have been hoping for this ever since the mini was launched.

Of course the nexus 7 has a smaller screen and yet it's heavier thicker and has a horrible battery life. Not the best engineering IMO.

They aren't making any profit off the device. It's priced so cheaply that google is hoping people will buy one and get hooked on their software and platform and be able to sell more ads.

Profit margin is much more important to apple. It isn't about who has the better engineers" it's about how desperate each company is to get people to their operating system.

But.. Also the Nexus 7 was a brand new product too so what is the point you are making? ...

The Note 8 isn't Retina either...

And whilst I agree - nexus 7.2 and kindle fire 2 may snag customers, what I am arguing against is the auto assertion people post here that this is fact rather than suggestive assumption that this is the case. Better specs from the competition don't always result in more sales. They in theory 'could' but so far we have no impirical evidence to show they did.

this is directly from Apple, i promise.

they are trying to kill down the earlier rumor that it wouldn't have one because they dont want Nexus 7 sales to get out of control

You're absolutely right, I believe Apple's feeling the heat and getting nervous.

This leak is sheer damage control.
