Excellent, Apple is responding to the Nexus 7. Don't you just love competition! Apple could do a $50 markup for being Apple, I hope they don't keep their mini pricing at current levels.

I take any Apple rumors with a pinch of salt.

Won't believe anything until it's released, I just want a Mini that is light/thin and has good battery life. Retina would be nice but won't be top of my list.

RETINA !!

Its just right but...

Doesnt fit in the suit pocket (1 inch too big)

Black front and white back would be nice

What kind of security does it have built in when using wifi? I'd like more like the BB tablets have.

of course its going to have a retina display. Not having one would be a pretty bold and stupid move by apple.

...and triple the price. Nexus 7 with better display will only go up in price for about 30 dollars....but iPad mini with retina would be like 100 dollars more.....phil schiler "and that is agressive price"....Yeah right Phil.

What are you talking about? iPads actually went down on price compare to previous models. Retina screen did not push the price up. So that's BS.

When WSJ says, "people familiar with the matter", that means "Apple".

This is a clear message from Apple to kill the rumors started today that the next Mini would not have retina. They don't want people rushing out to buy Nexus 7 thinking retina isn't coming.

Yes, timing is just too good to be true

iPad Mini is already just right. I hope they don't change a thing for a long long time.

No offense, but if we had that mentality, we have no progress in technology what so ever. Things change and get better. The mini is not 'just right' as it is anymore. It may have been a year ago (and barely IMO), but not anymore.

But thing is for sure, even Apple doesn't update it for a 'long long time,' as you say, it'll still sell because of the brand and marketing.

That has to be one of the most ridiculous comments I have ever read on these forums!

If you lived in a cave and at the time knew nothing better and thought your cave was perfect would you wish to live in caves and never advance?

I feel like we need to be shouting "Make up your damn mind". The rumors on this one are all over the place - why not just slap a notice on all "it will, it wont" news posts saying you have no idea.

Yes yes, and you should have been able to walk since the day you were born! Ignorance is bliss!

LOL not when the technology was already there (the iPad and iPhone). Yes, the iPad mini SHOULD have had the retina. There's no excuses not to have it.

Your analogy only would work with the iPad 1 and 2 when they no retina screen before. The mini came out AFTER the retina screen was introduced. So Apple knew how to "walk" but had the mini crawl instead. Hopefully it'll at least be a toddler with the next version cause the Nexus 7 is already learning to run!

Can it really be considered "responding" when it was what they planned to do all along?

Non-Retina iPad Mini --> Retina iPad Mini seems pretty in line with their other devices..

Yeah, because the first iteration was laggy as hell. :p

Yes, the technology was there but not quite enough to get it on the size and the battery life the mini have. This is what you and so many others fail to realise. I think Apple was stuck in adding retina and compromising thicknes/battery life or having the latter without rettina. And that's what id decited to do. And to be quite honest the ordinary consumer won't even know the difference of retina/non retina. I have heard many times people asking this question on the Apple store when they are comparing iPad 4'th gen with mini.

Which one have retina Screen?

Lol

The new Nexus 7 battery life is apparently quite bad. This doesn't bode well for a retina iPad Mini this year. Analysts go back and forth - and they will until there is an Apple announcement. Seems to have no connection to reality.

I don't see it happening this year. The technology isn't yet ready yet for a retina iPad Mini as small as the current Mini and able to get decent battery life. Hopefully by the Spring.

They aren't making any profit off the device. It's priced so cheaply that google is hoping people will buy one and get hooked on their software and platform and be able to sell more ads.

Profit margin is much more important to apple. It isn't about who has the better engineers" it's about how desperate each company is to get people to their operating system.

I don't believe that - there are third parties who are selling budget devices for less money and who don't have access to the economies of scale that Google and Asus do.
