Apple will release two models: a retina A6 and non-retina A6. Why? Because they consider it important to have a low-cost entry model. Proof? Check out the iPod Touch without camera for $199. The same strategy will be applied to the mini line-up:

- a low-cost, non-Retina model without camera for $279
- the 'normal' mini with Retina display, camera and multiple colours for $329

Something like that. Just like the iPod Touch.

Retina is coming, was always coming

Forget the analysts and don't think for a minute Apple are flip-flopping. Spoiler alert - the game plan has been in placed for a long time - the next iPad Mini will have retina.

The only thing I'm wondering now is if they are going to give the basic iPad Mini a speed bump as well, to work better with iOS 7? That would leave the product line like this:

iPad Mini 2 Retina, A7 chip, fingerprint scanning, iOS 7, slightly thicker and heavier. Same prices as last years Mini launch.

iPad Mini 1, A6 chip, iOS 7, all else stays the same. Price goes down to compete with Nexus / Android.

Sounds a lot like an usual WSJ controlled leak, probably in reaction to today's rumor. If true, Apple's PR is quick!

Maybe today's findings are actually about some second new iPad sporting a non-Retina Display? An iPad mini C? Current internals, color plastic casing, $229 price tag?

I don't know about a price tag costing $229; I mean, it's just paper. But I could understand the iPad costing around that.

I realize that if it's coming from the WSJ that it's pretty certain this is Apple's doing. But a serious question: why doesn't Apple just come out then and say it themselves? If they really want to make sure people don't buy a Nexus 7, I'd think a statement on the record saying the mini is getting Retina would send a clearer message — most people reading that article probably aren't going to see this as being a deliberate leak, but just more conflicting rumors.

Apple can leak a retina display and not deliver. Apple can not announce a retina display and not deliver.

Step 1: Invent time machine.

Step 2: Go forward a couple months to see what they release.

Step 3: Go forwards a few trillion years until the second big bang happens and the new identical universe is made.

Step 4: Report your findings.

Stop 5: Profit as the most accurate analyst ever.

I can see how the iPad Mini will also include colorful back covers. If the iPhone does indeed come in multiple colors, the iPad Mini will too. Here is why:

Apple likes to keep their product line looking consistent. It would not be consistent if the iPhones (cheap model most likely), and iPod Touches (cheap version of iPhone and hence the color) had color, while the iPad Mini didn't (iPad Mini = cheap version of iPad). This would also help to guide customers to the products they would want to buy (if product comes in multiple colors, then it is cheaper).

All speculation on my part

hahahahah

with last rumor apple got terrified and release actual fact :D i hope so

Wouldn't the colours not be more like the iPod Touch instead the iPhone 5C, since the iPad Mini isn't made of "plastic", but metal?

Honestly, this isnt even news. Definitely not worth a 'News Discussion thread'.

It will likely have a retina display"
- wow. people have thought that since the day the iPad mini was launched, its an obvious step for the iPad Mini.

"POSSIBLY multiple colours of back covers?"
- ooo damnnn.. thats pretty impressive insight guys. It's POSSIBLE the Mac Pro will come in a pink colour option too, but i dont see any posts about it.

Im not hating on MacRumours, at all. But some of these Threads are becoming pretty useless, just there to make it seem like something is happening in the world of Apple. Why not stick to actual news for the News Discussions.

This is why competition is good. Personally I wouldn't touch the Nexus 7 but really want to buy my daughter a 2nd gen iPad Mini for Christmas. If it didn't have a retina display I was seriously considering not getting it. However if it DOES have retina (and colours too) its a guaranteed purchase from me.

Stop stalling to spread profits out over time Apple. The mini needs to have retina.

Don't forget the plastic color back on the non retina to drive the price down

hah. This is exactly what I came here to say. Apple wasted no time in releasing info once rumor surfaced that mini won't go Retina... especially with the Nexus 7 touching down for like half price with full HD screen.

hah.

On another note, Apple brings the lottery to the iPad mini :p

If Apple comes out with a non-retina Ipad mini it would be a total disaster and might even cause Tim Cook to be shown the door.

When WSJ says, "people familiar with the matter", that means "Apple".

This is a clear message from Apple to kill the rumors started today that the next Mini would not have retina. They don't want people rushing out to buy Nexus 7 thinking retina isn't coming.

That makes sense. I also think that Apple cannot afford to come with another non-retina, looking at the competition.

But Samsung haven't released a retina tablet outside of the Nexus 10 themselves yet, and given the terrible reviews the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 " is reciving, I don't think anyone is going to be worried......

Oh and Nexus 7 HD versus iPad Mini already played out - and the mini won regardless of lesser specs on paper. Until 'specs' automatically equate to more sales - that argument has litte merit.
Samsung doesn't need months before they propose a Retina/FullHD tablet, and therefore they will have soon to produce one to stay in the competition for the fall/winter sales.

I have never understood this: Apple changed the way the world uses phones. The have reinvented the tablet in a way everybody wants it. They have put stuff in their devices that would have made Captian Kirk jealous. But having colors on a iPhone or iPad is just a step to far till now???????????

Thank god for Nexus 7....now Apple is in more pressure to release better screen. They may or may not, but if not for new nexus 7 with fullhd display, i am sure Apple would still use subpar resolution on ipad mini while charging extra premium price for it.

Maybe Apple is just not as good as Google (or Asus) then. If Asus can make retina display on nexus 7 with more ram, better proc and more ram for 100 dollars less, and apple can not do that, then Asus have better engineers.

And flash storage is so cheap this days, make 32GB a entry level.

Having better engineering was not the problem for Apple. Making the mini more desirable than the 9.7" iPad was. I doubt your going to see the mini at the same $329 price point. If we do you can kiss the $500 iPad goodbye.
The Nexus 7 is so good it's forcing Apple to make a move. Plus rumor has it that the next Amazon Fire HD will be even better than the Nexus 7 at $30 less. Apple will look like complete morons without a retina display on the mini.

With the alternating rumors saying yes and no to retina I'm thinking it might be available in both, kinda like the iPad 2 and the 4th Gen iPad both being on sale.

Apple Stores now display prices and specs on iPads next to other products, even iPads giving information about other iPads. So if they used this hypothetical cheap iPad to give information about itself, that may actually be right! ;)
