Excellent, Apple is responding to the Nexus 7. Don't you just love competition! Apple could do a $50 markup for being Apple, I hope they don't keep their mini pricing at current levels.

How is this a response to the Nexus 7? You don't just decide to put a retina display in the mini on the fly because of what a competitor does. I'm sure a lot of work has gone in to designing a product that still gets great battery life but isn't lot thicker and heavier. And considering how well this product would sell Apple has to know they can meet demand with no production issues. Tim Cook doesn't want another iMac situation. That would be a disaster.

So if there was a retina and non-retina version how would they be priced, because surely price dependent you wouldn't buy a non-retina over a Nexus 7 unless the specs make up for that?

At the same time wouldn't the retina version have to be priced only slightly above the new Nexus 7?

I doubt that, but I hope I'm wrong. Apple has high margins and that money will come from consumers or the suppliers.

If there's a retina display in the iPad mini it's a must buy for me. After holding a friend's iPad mini a few months back I realized how heavy the regular iPad is. All the iPad mini needed was a retina display and it would be perfect.

Is it just me or does it seem like these rumors about the iPad mini just going back and forth about a retina display...? :/

News Anchor: "...wait...what?... we have just been informed that the iPad Mini will NOT get retina... and this is the news at this hour... wait...what?... this just in, the iPad Mini WILL get retina...now off to Bambi for our weather forecast" :D

If it debuts with a retina display. I'll be a day 1 buyer. I think the iPhone/iPad mini combo is better than having an oversized phablet from Samsung.

Well I was hoping the new Mini would have cellular technology so it could replace my current phone.

Please stop with the he said, she said mini-Retina rumors.

Used to be better when the rumors carried some weight or were interesting. Now 90% are about minor details or about features like Retina that are a matter of when not if.

There will be both versions.

Regular mini with updated CPU and GPU but cheap, to help compete on low end and
Retina ipad mini for high end. Just like iPad mini and iPad mini Retina.

 The Mini DOES have cellular (the wifi + cellular) model. With your FaceTime and Skype apps, you're good to go!

My bad, what I meant by cellular was using it like a phone but seeing as you mentioned Skype I can.

Well then, who is stoping you do buy the "way more better" devices? You don't like the price and you think it is overpriced, buy something esle and stop whining.

Id rather spend $330 for a quality product then spend £99 for a garbage.

Then you clearly have no idea in technology.

Who the f are you to say someone to stop spiking?

Its stupid to ask you any tech question because you have NO knowledge on the subject, but what is better in ipad mini than in new nexus 7? Where is the "quality"

It is probably "its more expensive...so it is better...and also, Jony Ive said so".

When WSJ says, "people familiar with the matter", that means "Apple".

This is a clear message from Apple to kill the rumors started today that the next Mini would not have retina. They don't want people rushing out to buy Nexus 7 thinking retina isn't coming.

100% RIGHT ON Sir.

Someone at Apple actually DOES in fact read these boards and realized that a statement HAD to be made to the rumor of non-retina and people rushing to buy the N7.

Whether or not the next mini actually has retina or not is now irrelevant as people will at least now WAIT to see what it will have rather than buy something else NOW based on rumors.

As long as there is "hope" and a "chance" the next mini may have retina people will wait.

And Apple just provided that HOPE.

Well played Apple, well played indeed.

SMH if you believe they felt the need to make any statement to correct purportedly false rumors.
