That's it? Copying another company's hole punch design? Just serves to show how stale they've become design-wise. I know I've been groaning about the notch endlessly, I hate it with a grudge and I can't wait to see it gone, but not like this. At least it was a design unique to Apple. The "go big or go home" culture has completely left Cupertino and this rumour just proves it.

The updated device coming next year will have the same form factor as the current SE 2. It will still have a home button and won't be any smaller.

And the rumored next generation 6.1" SE 3 will adopt the forum factor from the XR/11. It is not going to be small.

Seems extremely unlikely it would retain the same form factor. Apple clearly wants to reduce the bezel even on their cheap devices.

So a hole punch design with a Home button? That would be ridiculously uneven.

In a sense I just can't see Apple utilizing a hole punch design when they are a company that somewhat insists on being distinguishable from their competitors. Like, the "notch" is a significant look that is outstanding enough for one to instantly name that being an iPhone - regardless of it being good or bad in 2021.

Doing away the notch and bringing in a hole punch design, while it would be impressive to see how they combine the FaceID sensors all together and it would be more than cool if that comes true (unless they ditch this authentication method entirely), it doesn't really make sense to me when doing so would blend Apple right into the rest of the market with nothing special to identify the company's product instantly.

This is the $399 iPhone SE. Customers aren't buying SE because they want something distinguishable. Apple isn't selling SE to those who want a distinguished iPhone.

A hole punch design is a lot cheaper than a notch cut + TrueDepth. And power button Touch ID is cheaper than a Home button. These designs have been used on less expensive Android devices to reduce cost and Apple is now using the same strategy.

Came from the iPhone 8 and all previous versions, up to the 12 Pro Max. In other words, my first introduction to the notch. Honestly, it has never bothered me. Watch all the same content and never once have I gone to bed angry because of the notch. 🤷‍♂️

This hole punch rumor is one of the dumbest I've heard in a while. Where are the Face ID components supposed to go? Apple isn't abandoning their super-expensive, super-secure, super-convenient tech just so they can have an ugly hole instead of an ugly notch.

Why are you assuming there will be Face ID for a $399 iPhone?

Have you seen the iPad Air?

Only what? 4-5 years behind the competition? Apple has become stagnant and incapable of innovation, the Chinese are eating their lunch. Sad.

The reason Apple hasn’t used a simple hole punch design is because their more secure face recognition relies on more sensors that cannot fit in that small a space. They could cheap out and copy android devices that use a camera only but why sacrifice security for an ugly hole punch? Personally I much prefer a notch which is reportedly getting smaller on this year‘s models.

I’m all for a hole punch design, as long as Face ID remains at the current standard or better.

Hmm would like some form of Touch ID to be available. Shopping with face masks and sometimes I don't like that I'll be sharing my phone, holding it, and it unlocks because I was just checking a widget for something.

I certainly wouldn't call FaceID "super-convenient" - FaceID is much more cumbersome and difficult to use than TouchID. TouchID can be used while in my pocket, laying flat on my desk, laying on my nightstand, or while tilted toward a touchless pay point - FaceID is useless for all of those. Give me TouchID over FaceID any day.

I don't see this as better than notch. Its still bad. This is maybe even more visually distracting. They should just remove the notch entirely. This punchout is as terrible as the notch

Would be good, of course, to have just a screen top-to-bottom. What to do with the front camera, though?

SE won’t be full screen

What's stopping the SE from being full screen?

If it has punch hole, it would naturally have power button Touch ID. Unless Apple deliberately makes a thin-bezel top and a thick bezel bottom. But that would be ridiculous.

Disappointing. I was hoping for a SE Plus version this year for my mother (70s) to replace her 6 Plus. She likes/wants the bigger screen, but does not like the gestures instead of a home button concept.

Perhaps get her an 8 Plus then? Still a great phone.

I hope there's still a mini, but I know a number of people who just really like the form factor, and will pick a smaller phone just so that it fits well in their hands
the 12 mini, although it has a slightly smaller footprint to SE 2020, has larger viewing area 5.4" to 4.7" 12 mini is IMHO a superior and also more expensive.

That means the bezels will remain in 2022. Wow.

Probably will see a 5.5" version to boot.

SE won't be gone till fall 2023 most likely. At that point Mini will replace it a lower price-point than current Mini pricing.

2023? You guys realize how many design changes can happen between now and then, right? There’s a lot of things that may not even come to fruition in the manufacturing process where the ‘hole punch’ design can be scrapped altogether. It’s not like this is guaranteed, this is a ‘long-shot’ rumor at best.

I get that Apple is trying to milk their old parts for a hundred years with the 4.7" buddy but it's getting ridiculous. I know that the SE is $400 but it's getting hard to justify even that price having such an old design compared to the Android world. Yeah we know it has a better CPU etc than similarly priced Android phones, but customers want a bigger screen and those bezels are too much in 2022. If They do this it better be even cheaper than the current SE otherwise they need to like turn the XR body into an SE.

We won't need FaceID anymore if Apple implements Touch ID on the power button like on the iPad Air or embeds Touch ID under the display.

Touch ID is just as super-secure and super-convenient as Face ID. IMO, Touch ID is more super-convenient than Face ID.

does this mean no more faceid? i honestly like faceId, but the pandemic and the mask has definitely swing touchid as the more convenient route.
There has never been FaceID on the "SE" models.

Plus it seems to use the design of the 12 Mini BUT with only 4.7" display.

I call this as BS on the hole-punch camera. I don't think that can be done on an LCD panel; nobody else in the industry as done it with LCD so why would Apple take a chance on this?
