Am I the only one who hates the hole punch phones? On many of them it's not even symmetrical and off to the side.

The notch may take away screen area, but at least it has symmetry with an attractive shape. A single round hole in the corner just looks like your five year old got carried away with a hole puncher.

So put the hole punch in the middle.

does this mean no more faceid? i honestly like faceId, but the pandemic and the mask has definitely swing touchid as the more convenient route.
I don’t believe the SE currently has faceID, so nothing would be changed there. In fact, the recent touchID under screen rumors would likely be for this, not for the flagship phones. Notch continues to rule the faceID day :)

LMAO. The comments are hilarious.

This is clearly and April Fool's post.

You're the third (at least) person to suspect that. I'm curious why you think so.

This rumor is in line with some other future generation SE rumors we've heard in the past, such as this one:

And this one:

Furthermore, this would be an extremely lame April Fool's joke because there's nothing in the rumor that is silly or preposterous. It's just a run-of-the-mill rumor like any other you'd find on Mac Rumors on any other day.

I don't see this as better than notch. Its still bad. This is maybe even more visually distracting. They should just remove the notch entirely. This punchout is as terrible as the notch
Do people even still need a camera on the face of their phones? /s

Perhaps get her an 8 Plus then? Still a great phone.

Right, that is still an option but really wanted something "new" with a longer support life. It is 3 1/2 years old now and you can't really purchase them new anymore. Refurbs at the Apple Store are still priced high (when they even have them).

I hate faceID, Having to pick up your phone off your desk to check messages, etc. It's highly inconvenient. This new se design is AWESOME. NO garbage notch, No garbage faceID. full screen, 3 cameras, and small with touch ID. I may stay with iPhone if this comes to fruition.

If you're already looking at a greener grass or over the fence ... Touch ID is not likely to keep you with IOS/iPhones, if not for long. we'll see though ;)

Nobody?

This phone’s screen is an LCD that measures 6.4 inches diagonally and has a resolution of 2310 x 1080. Honor’s done some clever engineering to create a cutout in an LCD, which is a trickier task than doing the same with an OLED panel.

I stand corrected. Thanks.

If this rumor holds, the Mini is unlikely to replace the SE. Instead, it sounds like the third generation SE will adopt the XR/11 form factor, likely with under screen Touch ID instead of Face ID.
No it won’t. Apple wants to keep it cheap. Those changes you list would make it cost more. It will probably get 5G and a new chip in 2022. That’s it. Look will be identical. Then it will be gone from the lineup in the fall of 2023 and an older Mini will take its spot at that price point.

Wouldn't the flagships need multiple hole punches? Like 3 or 4, to handle all the stuff the notch currently does?

Disappointing. I was hoping for a SE Plus version this year for my mother (70s) to replace her 6 Plus. She likes/wants the bigger screen, but does not like the gestures instead of a home button concept.
Same here. My 6 Plus has gotten really sluggish (especially since the security update last week). The screen is big enough and I prefer TouchID. Also, we're talking a couple hundred $ less, so.....

The updated device coming next year will have the same form factor as the current SE 2. It will still have a home button and won't be any smaller.

And the rumored next generation 6.1" SE 3 will adopt the forum factor from the XR/11. It is not going to be small.

at this point I wonder if it isn’t more expensive to still produce devices with home buttons if the majority of their devices use faceid. Quantity wise

They can't even accurately predict the things being released in a couple months and they're making claims about more than 2 years from now? 🤣

I always wanted to tap my camera to go back.
That's cause Apple hasn't really updated their designs. Look at Samsung's One UI. They actually took into account these bigger screens and designed the UI accordingly. I mean how outdated is having the back button all the way on the top left corner?

and touch ID still weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Everyone here have been bashing android designs, and now the rumored future iPhones are basically Androids from a few yrs ago and y'all cool now? 🤣

Took too long for Apple to come up with full screen 4.7" LCD screen, frame of iPhone 8. Many love to see this happens with 5G inside and back two(telephoto, wide angle) cameras.

Yes, just as the article said, and just as I have acknowledged in other posts in this thread.

You seem to have misunderstood what I meant by "third generation SE". The device coming next year is an update to the second generation SE. The third generation SE refers to the 6.1" replacement rumored to be coming in 2023.

No it won’t. Apple wants to keep it cheap. Those changes you list would make it cost more.

If a change to in-screen Touch ID is not viable, then they will simply retain Face ID.

Then it will be gone from the lineup in the fall of 2023 and an older Mini will take its spot at that price point.

That doesn't stand up against your claim that "Apple wants to keep it cheap". A device based on the iPhone 12 Mini would not be any cheaper than one based on the iPhone XR/11. In fact, given the OLED screen it would likely be more expensive.

Furthermore there is no evidence Apple intends to discontinue the SE. In fact, multiple rumors suggest exactly the opposite - that it will see a third generation. This only makes sense since it allows Apple to continue to offer a low cost device that will be supported longer than the device on which it is based by combining the older technology with a new processor.

'Third generation SE' means the 2022 model. You misspoke then.

Apple wants to keep it cheap. Meaning the 2022 SE will look identical to the current SE.

By the fall of 2023, Apple can offer an iPhone Mini model at a reduced price. Most likely starting at $499. That will be the cheapest iPhone they will offer by that point in their lineup. SE will be gone by then.

I seriously doubt you will see an iPhone with thick bezels in their fall 2023 lineup. That's 2.5 years from now.

If Apple keeps the same pricing scheme for the SE as for previous releases, then there's absolutely no way the SE 3rd gen will resemble anything but some sort of iPhone X, XS or 11 or 11 Pro.

There's no way the SE will get its own design or in any way resemble any models of the flagship 2021 or 2022 iPhones. This would only change if the SE doesn't remain in the $399-$499 price range which is highly unlikely.

When the 13 launches this year, the 11 or 2nd gen SE will get pushed out of the lineup (probably both, most likely just the 11) and the 12 will remain but get lowered to around $599-$699. The 12 Pros are also most likely getting pushed out of the lineup to highlight the difference between the 12 and the 13 and 13 Pro.

If Apple were to make the SE have unique features and a unique design they would canibalize sales of the flagship models.

Apple might give the SE models some new features but they quite evidently want you to still feel that you're getting something that's one or two generations behind in some aspects, which is why the 2nd gen SE didn't get Face ID or even just edge-to-edge display and over all resembles an iPhone 8 in most ways.

THere's also no way Apple would give a future SE model under-the-display Touch ID unless 13 or 14 have that too or something even better, like a combo of Touch ID under-display and Face ID:

The second you give the cheaper iPhone unique features or just a unique design that the flagship doesn't have then you lure too many customers to buy the cheaper phone instead of the flagship.

These speculations are as always completely far-fetched click-bait than anyone could come up with.

I'd be a bit surprised if that were the case. The XR is no doubt pretty cheap to produce since they sell it for $499. But it has a larger screen, larger battery, much more sophisticated camera setup, etc.

If that were the cheaper device in 2020 (and/or forecast to be over the life of the product), they would not bothered with the iPhone-8-based SE 2, they would have gone directly to an XR-based model instead (rather than waiting for the 3rd generation to do that).

I actually preferred the left hole punch design samsung had a few generations ago. The center hole punch looks worse aesthetically for some reason (weird I know).

Realistically hoping for a much smaller notch soon. I will be bummed if the 13 does sport the smaller notch as I just went from an X to a 12 pro. I would have waited but that's the game we play in the tech world.
