Kuo already said high-end 2022 iPhones will use hole punch. So the design language isn't just for SE.
I hope he’s wrong. I think Swiss cheese phone screens look ugly. Of course that’s just my opinion and likes. The notch doesn’t get in the way of videos so perhaps the hole will be close enough to the edge so it’s the same but IDK.

I don't see this as better than notch. Its still bad. This is maybe even more visually distracting. They should just remove the notch entirely. This punchout is as terrible as the notch
Are you forgetting that the current iPhone SE has a large bezel with a punch hole for the camera?

The SE model doesn't have FaceID.
True, but part of the article mentions a rumor about flagship models, and I would be surprised if they get FaceID to fit in there

Apple is rumored to be planning to bring the hole punch display to the 2022 flagship models, so it makes sense that after introducing new iPhone 14 models with the design change, it could trickle down to the iPhone SE a year later.

No I don't as I have that phone at home. I prefer the bezels than what is shown on the picture as its not visually disturbing. Sure, I would love just all screen but as long as there is notch or a hole I'm not really enticed to buy it. I'll be happy on my SE 2020 and by the time I'm ready to upgrade (3-4 years) there will be a phone with no holes or notches.

:)

That's cause Apple hasn't really updated their designs. Look at Samsung's One UI. They actually took into account these bigger screens and designed the UI accordingly. I mean how outdated is having the back button all the way on the top left corner?

As a recent Android to iPhone convert, this is the part that irritates me the most! That and the inconsistent locations for the back/close button in different apps. I much preferred a system-wide back button that didn't move around, but was also reachable!

does this mean no more faceid? i honestly like faceId, but the pandemic and the mask has definitely swing touchid as the more convenient route.
Probably it’s more like Apple keeping the SE with Touch ID (moving it to the power button), and FaceID for the rest of the lineup.

I don’t see the point in refreshing the 2020 SE with the same design. The 2020 SE is already sporting an A13 chip. Refreshing it without any design change would not be worth it IMO. I’m still banking on the 2022 SE having the XR body with A15, TouchID on power button, and punch hole LCD.

Yeah seems totally reasonable to totally overhaul the design of a device just to put a VPN logo in the corner instead of one swipe away 🙄
Live in a country with a where you have to use them at all times, because literally any government or quasi-government organisation can grab your entire connectivity metadata history without a court order, you'd probably feel different about wanting to know your VPN is there every time you do anything over a network.

In a sense I just can't see Apple utilizing a hole punch design when they are a company that somewhat insists on being distinguishable from their competitors. Like, the "notch" is a significant look that is outstanding enough for one to instantly name that being an iPhone - regardless of it being good or bad in 2021.

Doing away the notch and bringing in a hole punch design, while it would be impressive to see how they combine the FaceID sensors all together and it would be more than cool if that comes true (unless they ditch this authentication method entirely), it doesn't really make sense to me when doing so would blend Apple right into the rest of the market with nothing special to identify the company's product instantly.

The north is unintentionally “significant” because of how lazy design it is. I won’t buy one.

Nothing to disagree about. There have been two generations of the SE. The 2022 model will be the third.
It’s a spec-bumped version of the current SE, so it’s not strictly a new generation. But there’s nothing wrong with calling it that if you prefer. Perhaps it will get more significant updates than expected - time will tell.

Anyway, I’m glad we worked past the confusion, and I sure hope the 12 Mini remains in the lineup.

Cheers

Great, all my screen snapshots will have a hole in it instead of a notch. Oh wait never mind.

This hole punch rumor is one of the dumbest I've heard in a while. Where are the Face ID components supposed to go? Apple isn't abandoning their super-expensive, super-secure, super-convenient tech just so they can have an ugly hole instead of an ugly notch.
This is the SE...it doesn’t have any of that anyhow

Looks like there is lot of confusion in this thread. Let me clear that up.
Based on my understanding of the rumors this is what will be happening:

The next iPhone SE (2022) (3rd gen) will have the same form factor and screen size as the current iPhone SE (2020) which includes the bezels. The only upgrade expected are an upgraded A15 chip and Sub-6 GHz 5G support.

The next iPhone SE (2023) (4th gen) will have an all screen 6.1 inch display with a hole punch (similar to the iPhone XR/11 but without the notch). It will also have Touch ID but it will be on the power button similar to the current gen iPad Air.

The 2022 flagship iPhones are expected to have a hole punch display so it makes sense that this design will trickle down to the 2023 iPhone SE.

If you people have any other questions I will be happy to answer them.

Am I the only one who hates the hole punch phones? On many of them it's not even symmetrical and off to the side.

The notch may take away screen area, but at least it has symmetry with an attractive shape. A single round hole in the corner just looks like your five year old got carried away with a hole puncher.
I’m quite happy with the notch personally, I utterly hate the hole punch approach, just looks like a dead spot in the screen to me

Possible I guess, be surprised if it didn’t make the jump to FaceID but perhaps it will just get the newer implementation of TouchID on the side buttons instead. Although that would only either work well for right or left hand people unless it was on both sides. Still not a mini replacement folks...

I certainly wouldn't call FaceID "super-convenient" - FaceID is much more cumbersome and difficult to use than TouchID. TouchID can be used while in my pocket, laying flat on my desk, laying on my nightstand, or while tilted toward a touchless pay point - FaceID is useless for all of those. Give me TouchID over FaceID any day.
Add to those scenarios the constant inconvenience of having to unlock your phone with a mask and you've got yourself the full Voltron of "why FaceID sucks".

Who cares about the 2023 version rumors? The hole-punch will be just as stupid as it is now, only even more dated by that time. I'm having a hard time thinking about what should be added or redesigned at this point. Improved camera's and microphones/speakers will come anyway. Better battery life would be great. Maybe start removing things from iOS that few people use.

I like the SE line and I like touch ID. Not sure if my trusty 6S will soldier on until then.
Might go for some 13 instead. Hopefully with touch ID.

The iPhone Mini is part of the flagship iPhone line-up. Why would a flagship iPhone replace the iPhone SE, a lower end bargain priced phone?
Don't forget the Original SE was just the 5s with a better processor, the SE2 was the iPhone 8 with a better processor. BOTH were flagship phones. It's seems quite logical to me. I think that was the thought process all along.

No ugly notch but now we get an ugly distracting holepunch. Under screen camera needs to come out ASAP!
A little holepuch is 1000000000000000000000000000000000 times less distracting than a gigantic stupid notch. I agree the under screen sensors and camera need to come out NOW.

"2023 Version to Have Hole Punch Full Screen Design..."

I'm sorry , I'm and Apple TV and iPad user, but my Android phone has a pop-up front camera (works great, but I rarely use it anyway) and a full uninterupted amoled screen ... bought for 370 euros .... But ,,,, this is just sad.

Not to mention a dual-sim which is my first requirement. (yeah, I know about e-sim)

Apple was a tech leader not so long ago. Now they're just a bussiniess leader.

Like others, I don't see the hole punch as an improvement on the notch.

To both, I say "Nein!"
