The only way I see this happening is if the EU changes their rules and says all cell phones have to use USB-C and no adaptors are allowed. Right now they require micro USB and allow adaptors, so Apple just gives EU customers the little micro USB to lightning adaptor.

I do think we will start to see Apple switch the power supplies over to using USB-C and we will get USB-C to lightning cables. I'm not sure that this will happen with the 6S though, I'm thinking maybe with the iPhone 7, or maybe the iPad Pro if it is real.

?? How do you think usb-c is built?

The male piece is inside the device, the female piece is on the cable. How do you think it's built?

What would be the advantage of USB-C on a mobile device? I am genuinely asking, as I know not much about it. (This came up in another thread, were someone asserted the advantages were obvious; but when I asked for more info, my post was deleted for "petty arguing"!)
Well, a common charging cable for all my devices. Just imagine - I would need just one USB-C cable at my work desk and it could charge my smartphone, tablet or laptop.

A common port would mean access to common accessories. Currently, I need a lightning-to-VGA adaptor for my iPad and a displayport-to-VGA cable for my MBA. Won't it be be sweet to be able to share a common USBC-to-VGA or HDMI adaptor between my Macbook and iOS devices? And not just Apple devices, but any mobile computing device which sports a USB-C port as well.

Since the manufacturers presumably won't have to license this tech from Apple, prices of such accessories will be lower as well. No more outrageous prices for lightning accessories.

I know Apple is preaching the idea of a wireless world, but the fact is that my workplace has no Apple TV installed (except for my classroom, and that took an upgrade to a projector with a HDMI port and a purchase of a 15-m long HDMI cable out of my own pocket), so it's still cables for me all the way.

Everybody on the planet would in a few years use the same chargers. It would save a *lot* of waste, and you could use anyone charger to charge your phone.

I'm actually a huge fan of the lightning cable but it's because I have 4 iPhones in my household. iPhone 6, 2x 5S and a 5. It's nice that each use the same charging cable but I can understand a company wanting to upgrade to a newer tech.

Same here. We actually replaced the older touch and got a spanking new one this weekend and everything is now lightning cable equipped.

There could be benefits - no question. But look at the single port MacBook. Without any adapter you have to decide if to charge your device or do any thing else using a cable. Or you buy the multiport adapter from Apple for $79.

Eventually a new phone would be sold without a charger and cable (like with printers and USB cables). That would really be step forward. But I don't see the big companies agreeing on a common standard for a charger and charging ports. At least not in the foreseeable future.

Saving the planet does not make USB-C a better solution.
Being able to charge your phone anywhere you go, is kind of a big thing I would say. And saving the planet sure is a nice bonus.

They are required to, for selling their phones in the EU from 2017.

Thanks for all the responses. The idea of cross-platform compatibility is attractive as a user; but doesn't seem like that has really motivated Apple in the past(?) And if a USB-C port is even a little bit thicker than a Lightning port...

I could sooner see Apple introducing wireless charging, and then selling even thinner phones with no port at all! "Want to charge? Use our $80 charging pad. Want to sync? Use Wifi or BT..."

Nice, it makes it easier. And we have the electrical outlets with two USB connections so no need for the USB to electric power brick part.
