Aside from one socket type, what benefit to a phone/ipad would the usb-c give that Lightning doesn't?

I can see it on the latop for peripherals, but not sure of the use case for the mobile devices.

just to make a purely universal cable... but of course that alone means Apple WON'T deviate from Lightning. I wonder if they will make USB-C to Lightning cables or do they expect everyone to get an adapter?

Amazon sells them, for cheap too.

I always find that when I buy knock off cords they work for the first week then I get the error message saying that it is not compatible with my device.

I just bought a lightning to 30pin adapter. So I hope I've solved my problem

Force Touch will certainly happen, I'm going to say for the 6S. Lightening isn't going anywhere, they make to much money selling them to give up that revenue stream. Whether they replace the home button with a non button will depend on the tech being there. 6S is possible but I'm going to say they will wait until the redesign of the phone with the iPhone 7.

Anyone have an idea if the next-gen iPhones are going to have USB-C or lightning adaptors? I just bought new MacBoook. USB-C connector (ONLY 1)... I'll be really upset if the new phones aren't usb-c. Already upset that the Apple watch cable isn't USB-C. Isn't that "supposed to be" the new Apple standard?

Interesting question.

If you think about it an adaptor should come with all Macs that have a USB-C (or at least ONLY have USB-C). That way they don't screw over there customers with "required accessories sold separately". Think about it, buy an iPhone and a Macbook and take them home and you can't sync them (via wire). BTW I'm basing that off the idea the MacBook doesn't ship with an adaptor which might not be accurate.

They won't put a lightning to usb-c cable in the iPhone box because virtually no one has usb-c yet and no one will for a very long time. And its unlikely they would include an adaptor in with the iPhone because again most won't need it and it would kill the accessory sale. Plus it would be able to be used for other purposes unrelated to Apples ecosystem (PC with USB-C to a PC USB peripheral).

So my answer would be years upon years from now a lightning USB-C cable will come with the iPhone but only when its as or more popular then current USB is now.

Macbook did not come with adaptor and store where I bought MacBook didn't have one... Makes no sense

Seems like the same thread comes up every month or so.

No one really knows, but it doesn't seem likely that it would happen this year (with 6s being the likely phone to be released). Next year would be more likely probably (with 7), but even that's not something that really obvious.

I'm fairly confident USB-C will come to the iPhone and iPads either this year or next. With the new MacBook, I think Apple's ready and willing to make the switch. Android will follow too.

Unlikely for 6S, more likely for 7 but not guaranteed.

It would be a USB C to USB A cable anyway so you would still need an adapter to use the stock cable.

Back in 2014, the EU passed a directive that stipulates that all phone manufacturers will use the same connection for charging phones. This will go into effect in 2016/17 - so while apple could be ahead of the ball in terms of implementation of this is the new agreed standard. I highly doubt apple will implement this early unless it is in their interest .... Such as part of sales point.

Given that the lightning cables are proprietary in which apple receives a license fee.

So I don't think the 6s will come with with the new USB standard, but I am fairly confident we could see this rolled out on the iPhone 7

The price one pays for being cutting edge. I am betting they will keep the same lighting cable till likely the iPhone 8. There will be more USB-C devices available in a few years.

In the mean time you need to get the adapter. They are out there to be had.

Thing is that a lot of Android phones with USB-C will start to pop out soon.

If Apple adds USB-C in Sep. 2016 they will look like the ones who follow the masses.

Lightning isn't disappearing. Lightning is thinner than USB-C, so they would have to use a thicker port, meaning a thicker phone. Most everyone here would love a thicker iPhone, but Apple is thin obsessed.

Realistically, expect a Lightning-USB-C cable to show up soon.

I would be shocked to see it this year. I'd be surprised to see it next year. After all the hoopla from going to lightening I don't see it. Lightening at least made sense in allowing them to make a more compact phone, USB-C doesn't have this advantage. Most people aren't going to be using USB-C for years yet. To change the adaptor to satisfy a few on the cutting edge doesn't make sense.

Good point. That means we'll surely see USB-C on the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, and the new iPads.

I own the new MacBook, and USB-C isn't that much thicker. It's slightly wider and thicker, but not by much really. Certainly not enough to affect the design of Apple's next iPhones. By the iPhone 8, USB-C won't be necessary as wireless charging will become the standard by then.

I wish we will but IMO we won't see USB-C soon. Maybe Sep. 2016 when the redesigned iphone 7 is released. But Apple will be late to the party again.

Nope. When Lightning was introduced Apple said it would be around for 10 years. So no.

Not sure that would be something that would really provide too much of an argument against it. Certainly some, but not that much.

Lightning. USB-C on the Next Gen. iPhone 7, or simply iPhone. I'm hoping for simply "iPhone." But not hopeful. :apple:

Not this time. USB-C will be widely adopted. Lightning is too proprietary even for the Proprietary Master Itself. :apple:

Apple will just include a micro USB to lightning adapter with new phones most likely, simplest solution.

Nope. When Lightning was introduced Apple said it would be around for 10 years. So no.

Not to mention, the whole point of Lightning was to create a SMALLER connector, why in the world would Apple move to a BIGGER connector?

I just don't see it happening for the reason I stated above. The whole point of Lightning was to create a SMALLER connector, why in the world would Apple move to a BIGGER connector?

There's literally no advantage to moving to USB-C for a phone.
