Lightning can do a lot more in terms of accessories than USB, for a phone. Think those credit card readers at the Apple Store, or the handhelds at Target.

This would be the worst thing they could do to their fanbase. I imagine a large number of users either have bought additional cables/accesories.

Like they did with Lightning connector? Seems like it was pretty much the opposite of the worst thing.

I don't think it's going to take off that well

Since it's being adopted as the standard pretty much across the board it seems like just by default it's going to "take off" as more and more devices will use it in the coming years.

The difference between going from 30 pin to Lightning versus Lightning to USB C is that Apple said they needed to shrink the size of the cable for the devices to get thinner.

Besides we had 30 pin for almost 10 years. Lightning is coming on it's 3rd year and if it's already being replaced there is sure to be a harsh reception.

Apple still does make some money by licensing their lightning chips to be used in MFI lightning cables. There is no way Apple will let go of that revenue stream and allow us to use ANY USB Type-C cable in the market. That goes completely against Apple's philosophy.

So No. Only possibility is we will see a Lightning cable where one end will be lightning connector and other end will be USB Type-C connector.

this is my quess, and it will be an option...anotherwords they will have the normal USB and new USB-C option (for faster speed/charging)

Now that these new hardware pieces are out there.

How soon do you think Apple will do away with Lightning in favor of USB type C on the iOS devices as well as getting rid of the Home button to reduce bezel space?

Hypothetically a "spot" with the TouchID and Force Touch can replace the home button.

I asked a few months ago where they can go from here. The iPhone isn't going to get that much thinner (maybe as thin as the Air 2...) but they could shrink the top and bottom bezels a bit more.

Thoughts?

Based on a few previous threads about these topics, it could be as soon as next years model, or might be further down the road.

I don't think Apple will drop the Lightning connector just yet as it is still smaller than USB-C; and you know they like their thinness. The force touch would be a pretty nice addition to the phone, most likely happening next year if I had to guess; but this year would be nice too.

No way in hell will apple remove the lightening cable. They break constantly and apple are the only ones who sell them. I F#*KING HATE THAT CABLE!!!!

So it could be sometime in the future? Interesting analysis Cotton, let's see if pays off.
