If I had to choose, and this is what people like about video on DSLR, I would choose shallow depth of field, which implies a wide aperture for the lens. Whether the video is 30p or 24p pales besides the quality of the lens and and the aperture.

That's not true. It's the sensor size that will give you the shallow depth of field. Aperture only allows you to control it. the sensor makes it possible. And you're not getting a sensor anywhere near the size necessary for the shallow DOF you're talking about.

With a 5 megapixel camera it is possible to capture not only 720p but also 1080p (HD) and 4080p (4K). The device is solid state so only the internal bus is the limiting factor, aside from software support.

Why not at least be able to capture brief high res images?

Why not support high frame rates to facilitate slo-mo display?

This is an internal device and software limit, not a network limit, so "make it so."

Rocketman

You make it sound like it's so easy. It's a hardware issue and a difficult one at that. That's why you don't see any 4K cameras in the consumer market. They are extremely expensive, starting at $20,000.

As for slo-mo, that's also hard to do. Not many actual video cameras are slo-mo capable either.

It better have both. Android is bringing serious competition this year with the Droid Incredible and Sprint Evo and for the first time, iPhone needs to play catchup with hardware and software features.

Gimped tethering, bluetooth (ipod control ARGH!), carrier choice, Flash support, camera flash, call quality, camera/video resolution, display resolution, speakerphone quality, HDMI, singletasking (even the new mutitasking looks klunky compared to how Android and Pre do it), replaceable batteries, FM, and the lack of OTA syncing and updates is really making my iPhone 3GS hardware look like a dinosaur.

The App Store and SDK quality are really the lifeblood of iPhone right now.

Now I'm probably not the first to think of this, but the mic that's in the pictures on the top of the iPhone 4 next to the 3.5mm port (and that was first mused to be for better noise cancellation during calls) might be for recording stereo audio while filming?

I also think that :) It makes sense, then you have each mic on opposite sides of iPhone when you are holding it in landscape for recording HD video. I hope it`s true.

Hmm... a 720p camera seems far to 'current' for the iPhone. Normally they have cutting edge software but outdated hardware. Maybe this is BS or maybe Apple are upping their game now they have some real iPhone competitors out there.

There's not a huge amount left for Apple to add to the iPhone now as far as hardware is concerned. If they want to continue releasing 1 a year and making the investment seem justifiable then their only option at present is to close the hardware gap that they have.

Once that gap is closed, then I wonder if we'll see a drop in sales as users only invest in an update once in a while.

iPhone

hopefully they go back to the basics with the name.. new hardware, new software, new start for the iPhone. there can be a 4.1 version number but please don't brand it with it, like with Macbooks.

iPhone 4HD Ultra X2 Remix vs Capcom.

HD video would be cool if they could get any decent quality in there, and I doubt apple would put HD in there unless they could brag about being good, or at least totally okay.

But I'm still holding out for an FM receiver! Wasn't that supposed to be in the radio chip anyways, but they just haven't enabled it? A transmitter too would be golden

You're holding out for an FM RECEIVER? Do you realize how bad radio is nowadays?

The FM transmitter would be useful for hooking up your iPhone to any car seamlessly.

Well now they will be equip to fight against Windows Mobile 7 phone... (which require to be able to run 720p video...) it just miss the oled part now!
