So let me get this right ?

I can, for example, rave about a great movie but not about my mac because it offends windows users and because it's not as perfect as you guys want it to be??

Nowhere did I say mac was the second coming or that they don't have their flaws - plenty of times I've outlined their weakness's and deficiencies but this is a whole other level - your effectively asking me to 'curb my enthusiasm'??

I'm getting the bum's rush for suggesting that there is nothing wrong with being passionate about how great the mac is ?

Seems like I'm alone here being a seriously happy customer - fair enough - I'm happy even if you guys aren't...

It's okay to be enthusiastic, and many of us are happy Mac users as well. The other sides to the discussion are those that are happy with their Macs but have to cut something out of their lives to use them, and therefore want Apple to put that something back in since they have the power to do so. A perfect example would be the mini tower and ultraportable Mac.

The other side contains the group of people that love the Mac so much that they insult and irrationally critise the other companies. Windows may not be the best option for some but it's working for a large number of people, and many times there are Mac users who wouldn't be able to give up their Windows PCs for various reasons.

There are also those machines out there that Apple doesn't have that run Windows... the mini towers, UMPC, Tablets, and super computer workstations llike the HP Blackbird. The users that down Windows also seem to find a very frivolous way to put down these machines even though they are better than their Mac equivalents, or don't even have a Mac equivalent.

You are in the third group, that loves the Mac and keeps it civil.

Who are 'you guys' you keep referring to?

Half a dozen folks who'd rather kick a 'happy mac user' than join him.

It's easier to say ' yeah it's cool that you dig your apple - I like em too - heck they aren't perfect but they are still seriously nice' than to say ' wow - wow cool it dude - we don't want to hear all your happy talk round here'.

I don't get it...

I'd agree with that -

However, I remember the wilderness years between 1990 and 2001 when Apple was nearly lost to everyone - perhaps that's why I'm so glad they are on the rise.
Also it has been revealed conclusively that over that same period of time Microsoft was not an ethical company - today? I don't know, my gut feeling tells me they're still the same, but one thing is sure - Apple deserves our support.

I personally send in feedback to Apple when they are getting it wrong, and now I'm not suggesting Microsoft go bust or anything but when I see the 'sleight of hand deception' like the article that spawned this thread 'll stick my oar in when I see the happy mac folks getting kicked in the head for speaking out against it....Is that so wrong? Being a mac lover is not some dirty secret...

Funny how a label affects psychology... Slap a single word on someone like "fanboy" and you immediately get them to start back peddling, derailing the conversation-- even you felt the need to show how multidimensional you are while defending your right to be single minded.

Only shills use the word fanboy.

My post wasn’t directed at you but at the ‘fanboy’ concept. But somehow you took it personally and didn’t capture the spirit. You surely must know what I meant with my reply. Enthusiastic and brand supportive is one thing, blind devotion is another. While I’m typing this, I see e-mails coming in. They are full of assumptions. That saddens me.

I agree with that.

Perhaps I did take it a little personally but I'm not offended or enraged or anything like that - just slightly perplexed - the way I look at it is this place -this forum - is like a club that plays my favorite music and I just expect others to 'dig the music' as much as me. I will say that I have never gone to 'that other club' and started bitching about their lousy music - at the very least I keep it 'on home turf' as it were.

I dig the music as much but I don't see the great divide that others do. And I don't feel the need to either defend my choice or attack the choice of others. Besides that, what are we talking about here? Luxury problems! "Will I blow 2000 Euro on a Mac or on any other piece of hardware?". I've been to Indonesia this Summer and have seen things that still runs chills down my spine. Child labour that makes you sick. :(

Yep, it's all too easy to forget we are the lucky ones...

Despite how Gates got the money, he's still giving it away. I don't see Jobs giving away the billions that he has. And of course he doesn't have to, but there's a reason many people see Jobs as arrogant.

That's certainly true. I greatly respect what Gates has done with his money.

But what does that have to do with the fact that Microsoft regularly hypes new products years before they expect them to be delivered and then delivers them years late in an emasculated form?

The Xbox and the 360 aren't inferior (or are they o_O ). :D

I don't know. If they can get them to work more than 3 hours without the red ring of death, perhaps someone will be able to say.

Fanboy

Perhaps someone should define the term, because I like it. But it seems to have some negative weight associated with it. I guess it depends on which way your finger is pointing.

I love the fact that MS put their foot in their mouth. By simply mentioning the word iPhone, people will forever compare Windows 7 to the iPhone and think MS copied Apple.

.... I had no idea it was so negative.

I don't think it is always construed as negative. Only when used as a term of abose by the opposite faction :)

Fanboys are not limited to Apple products by any means. You see them in many walks of life and product preferences, although the Mac/PC fanboy division does seem to attract more than its fair share of geek/nerd types (and I don't mean the "modern media" cool type geeks who know their product as well as have an aspirational lifestyle - I mean the traditional nerds who live at home with mom, can't get a girl, and value their self worth by how they can win arguments in chat rooms ;-)

Other spheres I've encounter fanboys have been:-

PS(2/3) vs. Xbox/Xbox360 - strangely the cool people who by Wii seem to abstain on the whole!
Mac vs. Wintel (vs. Linux - to a lesser extent)
BMW vs. Audi (vs Porsche) - Surprising that people who can afford 100k cars have the time for such ********, but its is true, somehow they do!
Bluray vs. HD-DVD - why? these are just formats. Just pick one, buy it and enjoy the movie!
Mitsubishi (EVO) vs. Subaru (WRX STi etc).
Nikon vs. Canon

Bottom line is that in all walks of life, there are a certain type of people that define themselves by the products they buy and take considerable offence if the "competition" happen to have a better product at a given time over their personal choice. This seems to cause a lot of bitterness which requires considerable trolling for said sad f*ckwit fanboy to gain some self esteem.

I welcome open and honest debate about the pros and cons of a product - and lest face it all these things are just mere products, they are not relatives or loved ones are they! - but people who choose to blindly challenge the merits of the "competition" purely because of blind devotion spoil intelligent debate.

There are probably more PC fanboys in the world than there are mac users. But after 15 years of using the Mac and 12 years of working in IT, I;m sad to say that I (personally) think that there are is a much higher proportion of fanboyism amongst the Mac fraternity. whether this comes from years of minority status and continued self justification, or whether the self righteous indignation that usually accompanies those who are more affluent and can afford to make informed choices about the products they buy rather than choose on price (which btw imho is probably the most common factor of resentment amongst PC fanboys - relative poverty :) I don't know.

Either way, this thread has been polluted by fanboysitm, the debate thereof and counter-strike more than any other than I have seen in recent times. A real shame as this place used to be a place for informed debate about Apple related issue. I hope that status is regained soon.

/end of rant.

PS mac's rule. PCs are s**t! :D
