Unless it immediately pick up and scans my eye just by looking at the phone, it will go unused. Anything that takes more than a fraction of a second to get into my phone securly is an inconvenience.

As a contacts/glasses wearer, something like this makes me wonder if people such as me will get to even use it or if it's smart enough to see past vision correction material.

Why would I want this instead of Touch ID, which can securely unlock my phone before it's even left my pocket.

Possibly for better protection in the future?
Another layer of protection?

Eg:
Touch ID - just for unlocking phone,
Touch ID + iris scan for online banking, unlocking your house or car etc.

I think this technology will be interesting and has the potential to open a lot of doors. I'm curious to see where this leads.

'Pillock' seems to be the word of the day, which is nice.

I can't think of a single reason why I would want to use iris scanning over/with Touch ID.

I thought next year's iPhone was going to unlock by acquiring blood and running a DNA sequence to match. Or you will be able to spit on your phone if you don't want the built in Liquidmetal® needle to stick you.

Yep you can also lick your Apple Watch to intiate a whole host of customisable tasks on your Mac or iOS device. It's called quickylicks.

Hey Jony! Are you reading this?!

Yes, password entry into my smartphone is a job that is already securely and quickly accomplished by TouchID. I guess this is being done in connection with getting rid of the home button. But it is going to have work darn nearly flawlessly to be an improvement over what we've current got.

I also don't mind picture unlock or pattern unlock. Both take about a second.

If Apple can do this u know it will be stored secure if it replaces Touch ID,, Probably use the same enclave or area of the phone to securely store which will not be shared with any other chip.

However, its probably come to a point where we only gotta wonder about being stored, and less about uniqueness.

It also give u a good reason to get *out* of unlocking by law if u have been drinking, or red eyes. :)

I'm in.

I don't believe this rumor for a second. Iris scan is not as reliable or fast, opens Apple to "you blinded me" law suits, doesn't really improve anything, and Apple has spent years getting users used to TouchID and improving the system.

Edited i wrote retinal instead of iris
Well, as long as we're blinded with science it's okay.

Regardless if the rumour is true, I fail to see any good reason for implementing iris scanning. This has gimmick written all over it.
I live in a cold-weather state, and I would love to be able to unlock my phone without taking off my gloves! I just got my SE in April, my first phone with TouchID. I'll be interested to see, come winter, how often I feel put out by needing to remove gloves to unlock my phone, and how often I feel it would be much more convenient to have an iris scanner.

BTW the same could be said of my previous iPhone 5c: I had to take off my glove in winter to tap in the passcode. So perhaps it won't be as big a deal as all that.

So you do use Apple Pay a lot? which means you do like the idea to leave your wallet at home right? what about your indetification card? don't you want to leave that at home also? because if your smartphone has an Iris scanner you can! and you can also unlock your phone from the pool or using your gloves!

So your saying the Police will accept a smartphone Iris scanner in place of an ID/Driving License? I use ApplePay because its more secure then using a CC.

The number of times I'd need to unlock my phone from the pool (zero) or with gloves on in no way outweighs the insanity of scanning my eye with a phone! I can see it being useful in some cases, but none that I'd actually use!
