Reason: The iPhone cannot afford to fall too far behind the competition. There are already phones coming out this year that are going to (arguably) give the iPhone a run for its money; Apple needs to keep current and retain people's interest in the iPhone.

Reason: A new iPhone or two every year gets people like me to upgrade every year AND brings in new customers to boot.

I may hold out for the "MacBook Wheel" though.

Some may argue this but I believe its true to a certain extent. If not just for the 1st gen owners. If they havnt upgraded to the 3G already, what's gonna persuade them to upgrade now all of a sudden? 3.0? Maybe.

But the fact that there are comparable phones coming our way this June/July timeframe, there will definatley be more people at least peeking at other options.

Take the Nokia E71x, which was just announced today, confirmed to be coming to AT&T. Very nice phone. 100 bucks. And get this...it has a "metal" casing (check me on that). How can one phone use a metal casing with no worry of interference but the iPhone can not supposedly, as Apple never really come right out and said that for fact. Plastic cheaper maybe?

Anyways, CTIA is this week so expect to see a lot more competition coming into the game (hopefully). Maybe there will be something announced at CTIA so fantabulous that if pushes Apple to give us some crumbs of what's to come other than just software. ;)

Reason: You would not see AT&T offer the iPhone 3G unsubsidized without "Official" GO PHONE compatibility unless they were dumping their surplus of 3Gs for the new phone.

The no "Official" iPhone 3G GO PHONE offering is a dead give away. The new iPhone will sport the new Infineon chipset (That works) and 7.2 Mbps max throughput rate their new HSPA 3G network will be capable of supporting.

To me the apps do that. When the iPhone first came out I felt like it was just a toy. I liked my Blackberry and saw the iPhone as a lot of bells and whistles.

NOW...years later, I see the fruit as it is ripe. The apps won me over. I like how I can have useful tools like a level, or a calorie watcher, access to recipe sites, skype, etc...so many lifestyle enhancement apps.

Someone could come up with a phone right now that has video conferencing, 200GB of space, and a wireless speed that outdoes 3G...I'll still stay iPhone because it has what I want in a phone. It's why I chose M-Audio's Torq over Rane's Serato Scratch Live. Yes SSL is the popular choice, but Torq fit more to how I wanted to DJ music.

Plus I'm itching to see if I can control the software with my iPhone...just for kicks. ;)

Reason: Why wouldn't Apple just come out and say "Do not expect a new iPhone announcement at this WWDC, buy the current gen and enjoy 3.0". Wouldn't people that are waiting for something new rush out and buy the current gen instead of waiting for some kind of announcement. I probably would. Hell, they would probably sell a few million more by just posting that up! :D

Unrealistic, I know.

Why can't they just sell what we know as the 3G iPhone now, w/ w/out modification, as the low end version? Remember the 4GB iPhone?

Price umbrellas - they could drop the current 3G iPhone price down another $100, and bring in a new one for the current price.

I'm thinking that's what they will do.

My prediction:

Current 8GB iPhone 3G (low-end version) = $99 (entry-level)

New 16GB iPhone 3G Pro = $199

New 32GB iPhone 3G Pro = $299

I remember reading somewhere that inventory is low on 16gb models, and that's why I say they will discontinue the current 16GB with the new one and continue to sell the 8GB for a new low-end price of 99 bucks.

But with recent news (today) of a possible new 'low-end' phone as well as a 'high-end' phone have me speculating that this 2,1 and 3,1 numbers are associated with these two new models. Who knows?

That sounds pretty darn good. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple came out with something along the lines of this although the pricing may be different.

What do you think? Maybe 'higher' on the 'high-end'? With maybe enough of an upgrade other than capacity to justify slappin' another 100 on each? Because I can see that happening.

Apple will most likely release a new iPhone this year. I think they will add:

Better camera
I believe they will add a better camera, purely because cameras are always updated in every other phone. the iPhone is growing into a more comptetive phone and needs to keep up. I am expecting a 3.2mp, but not higher than that (or whatever the norm is)

Video Recording
The video recording will use the new camera in order to get video recording 'right'( good quality) as apple likes to do it. No front facing camera. Very few phones do video conferencing on att, nor would performance be that great over the current network.

Crashing Crashing Crashing
Apple WILL definitely up the specs. For the obvious reasons of many apps crashing and needing reboots before working. This will enabled more complex applications=more money. And now devs have more access to different APIs(some which may be more memory intensive).

Space

The new iPhone will have a different storage capacity as well as form. If Apple's statement of video recording not working with NAND memory is true, then a new type of storage system will be enabled to use the video recording feature. Space will also be improved to handle all the videos we record as well as all the video mms.

Form Factor
Apple has got the form factor down. Less interference with the plastic. There is nothing aesthetically wrong with it. Maby new colors but i highly doubt that.

Misc:
-There will not be two different versions of the iphone. That is just utterly stupid lol

-Flash for the camera? You are joking right? There will not be flash for the camera. Forget about it

This is all speculation. But i think this is reasonable

Near perfect list of upgrades, except for them sticking with plastic. Not saying they won't, which they probably will, but I would hope they would go with a more durable (non-cracking) back. And the interference deal is getting ridiculous. Apple never came out and said, "the reason we switched to plastic is because of interference with the atenna's/radios", I think they did it because it was cheaper maybe? I dunno, but what I'm getting at is there are plenty of other phones out there that are made with metal shells with no known interference problems so I don't see why Apple can't make it happen...again.

Check out the Nokia E71x, coming to AT&T very soon. Slick phone with stainless steel casing. If Nokia can do it, Apple can do it.

"The new model has a stainless steel casing and has a much narrower and slimmer body."

Doesn't mean completely steel.

Doesn't look unibody steel to me.

And yes, Apple has talked about antennae in the past.

Yeah, I would think that Apple would stick with the $199/$299 price points. With the whole economic downturn, I would think that releasing a $399 iPhone would not sit well with anyone.

Yea that's right, although if it had some really great new features I would still gladly pay $399. Of course I've got over half of that saved up in Christmas gift cards, so a new one isn't gonna cost me THAT much anyways. ;)

If this image is verifiable, it kinda points to video...
If APple is increasing manufacturing of iPhone 3G - Is the currnet phone compatible with China? Or would they need modifications? If they can sell it as is, they might just do a price drop on the current model? If they can put in the newer double the capacity for the size RAM into the current model, that'll help. We'll see I guess - it does depend a bit on whether they're selling different kit by June, meaning they have to get rid of all their stock prior to that.

Reason: Apple Doubles iPhone Unit Orders.

http://www.macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/report_apple_doubles_iphone_unit_orders/

"Financial weekly Barron's quotes Seligman fund manager Paul Wick, considered one of the major investment managers in the technology sector, who said simply that someone who is looking for a large technology company, at a cheap price, without having to bet on when the recession will end, should look at Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). Apple has $31 per share in cash, and generates about another $8-9 per share in cash each year. Additionally, he claims, based on what he says are good sources, Apple has ordered from its Taiwan sub-contractors double the quantity of iPhones for second quarter delivery as it did for the first quarter of this year," Shlomi Cohen reports for Globes Online via Seeking Alpha.

"If Wick is correct about the increased number of iPhones, then there are apparently increased orders because of an imminent signing by Apple with a Chinese telecommunications company. It’s a potentially giant market for Apple, and rumors have it that China Unicom will be the first to sign, and it will happen quite soon," Cohen reports.

"Bank of America analyst Scott Craig, who covers Apple, estimates that Apple can capture at least 20% of the smartphone market in China. If the launch in China happens in the middle of the year, he forecasts that by the end of the year Apple will able to sell around 1.5 million iPhones there, 4.6 million in 2010, and he sets a target for 2011 of 5.8 million handsets," Cohen reports."

And if you click the link and read the comments left at the bottom everyone just assumes this is for the Next Gen iPhone. The way I read it is that they were getting huge orders ready for the China shipping. Anyone else? It would be nice if it were for the next gen though.
