So you think Google is stupid enough to just surprise release their biggest device with no major announcement ahead of time? LOL

I wouldn't really call it a "surprise release" at this point, but I understand what you're saying. Not sure anything other than an acknowledgement of its availability on Play store is needed, though; majority of the people who want this phone have been following the rumors, and the rest will find out from the buzz created by its release.

Is Google crowd-sourcing the Nexus 5 announcement?

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Is-Google-crowd-sourcing-the-Nexus-5-announcement_id48932

I've been theorizing this for some time now. If this is true, Google's "marketing" is pretty brilliant. It's viral enough to gain momentum, and it's subtle enough to not upset Google's partners.

Like I said, why not take advantage of leaks that you know you can't seal up 100%, and just carefully time and release a variety of information to throw people off, keep people on their toes, create buzz, etc.

I refuse to believe Google released their first video of KitKat without realizing the Nexus 5 was in the video. They have an entire legal department, I'd wager, to precisely look at stuff like that before it goes out.

You clearly don't understand business and marketing. Just because the tech geeks can no longer contain themselves doesn't mean Google has forgotten how to run a successful business, you don't just put your biggest product up for sale and go oh hey by the way, that device everyone has been waiting for is out already

Yeah, it is brilliant. It saves a lot of money and, in my opinion, is more effective than a stupid marketing event like Samsung put on for the Galaxy S4.

Marketing? Where was the giant marketing blitz for the Nexus 4? The Nexus 7? The Nexus 10?

Also, what if this turns out to be true? https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/18274821/

We'll see.

I think you are ignoring what everyone in the thread has said. People who buy this device are tech geeks and follow forums/tech sites. They do not need to publicly announce it with a conference.

you deserve a break......eat the KitKat already......its chocolate for crying out loud! :)
But it's not the same... I'm eating it one way or another because I'm doing a bunch of work outdoors at home later this afternoon and should be hungry by then.

Alert! Alert! Alert! Apple troll in the thread......

Absolutely cracks me up that couch's post just above yours makes your response look so completely lame.

And if you think Google is just like any other company when it comes to business and marketing, you're the one that clearly doesn't understand anything. You're applying archaic ideas to the world's leading tech company.

I'm fairly sure they know what they're doing.

They got proper announcements didn't they?

What's a "proper announcement"? An event? How do you know there isn't an event? And why is a non-event announcement not "proper"? Who says? You?

How'd that Nexus 4 event work out for them? Instead of rescheduling it, they scrapped it altogether. And maybe then they realized, they didn't need to make an event since the Nexus 4 sold like hotcakes regardless. When you price things far more affordably and offer better value, word tends to get around.

There may still be an event yet.

Again, you're comparing something from the past with the present. So because last year's Nexus devices got a "proper" announcement (I'll remind you that the Nexus 4 DIDN'T because of Hurricane Sandy), then every device going forward should/will get the same announcement?

And who doesn't know anything about business and marketing again?

Get on my level...

The 2013 Nexus 7 got essentially nothing - it was announced as part of another talk, and retailers started selling it before the announced for-sale date, so, basically, people heard about it and then were able to get it almost immediately.

If you consider announcing it today and having it for sale tomorrow with many places selling it early "by mistake", then, sure, you can claim they announced it.

There will be a new banner on the Play Store devices page, maybe a "On sale Nov 1" tag, and that'll be that. In about 15 minutes, a ton of reviews will hit the web.

Lol, it looks like I haven't missed much. I put my phone down the whole time on lunch break.

Heh, we're basically saying the same thing in different ways.

High five!

No need for that. I've already said the Nexus is the one device that could get me to switch phones and carriers. I obviously have interest in it.

You have interest in it ONLY because you want to get one so you can tear it down in comparison to the iPhone. Man, you're not the first one in here...we've seen your type many, many times before.

Couch, your views and thoughts and my views and thoughts always seem to align. We were some of the first to really bash the camera on the One around here (and you caught all kinds of crap over it, whereas it's now an accepted idea).

Forward-thinkers...that's what we are! :D

True but Google is not stupid enough to release any kind of device the same day as Apple does, they would get buried. I'm thinking they announce it next week sometime with a mid Nov release

I believed for a while now that the nexus line isn't intended for the mainstream smartphone audience. It's for a niche audience which doesn't need to be marketed towards. Hence why you don't typically see any nexus phone marketing going on.

Right on. Just telling it as it is.

Oh C'mon Ken....we all know and have seen your countless post about every Android phone you get or SAY you have anyway. It always ends up the same way. With you posting about how Android phones are good.....but just not as good as your beloved iphone. So save us all the dribble and just stick to the iphone.......we all know how this ends.......
