I own a Samsung Vibrant (T-Mobile's version of the original Galaxy S).

My roommate owns an iPhone4. I went to play with T-Mobile's version of the Galaxy S II this weekend at the store.

As you might expect, the screen size is very nice for reading or using google maps or watching youtube videos.

Whether you like one screen better than another is personal preference. The iPhone4 screen does have the superior resolution, but the GS2 screen beats it in size and vibrance.

I am *very* surprised that Apple hasn't yet moved to SuperAMOLED+ technology for their displays.

I only got to play with the phone for about 15 minutes, not enough time to form a complete opinion about the device vs other devices.

I am looking forward to the ICS/Samsung announcement tomorrow. Will live stream it if I'm not too busy playing Batman Arkham City (which also comes out tomorrow)

I always found it funny apple fanboys scream about not looking at specs, unless your talking about screen resolution. Forget the numbers, I know that's impossible because people will pick up the iPhone and BELIEVE they should like it better visually than anything else because the PPI is higher. But just use your eyes and not over analyze it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

I am interested to see what happens on Wednesday. It may be enough to make me switch from ios...

Let's all hope it's amazing; honestly it can't be much better unless they do some serious overhaul in the default UI and make the sdk better as well

That's the problem with an open environment though, a lot of it is going to be under par.

Honestly the iPhone's retina display is overrated. In real world use Samsung screens are easier to read/view. The colors are better. Regarding the lower resolutoin, its not like Samsung screens are blurry...

Exactly. A lot of fanboys and biased cnet/gizmodo writers can't seem to comprehend that. BUT IT'S SHARPER. Yes, but I like color a lot more. Honestly the retina vs 1st generation Super AMOLED is even for me. AMOLED does lack that sharpness but makes up in color. Retina is too light but very sharp.

This. My eyes like COLOR. It's almost like comparing a high res black and whitve tv vs a lower res color tv.

It will be interesting, but until the combo of Android and LTE can become more power efficient, then all of the other specs mean nothing to me. It will be interesting if ICS address the power issues with LTE android phones. I tried a Bionic and while the LTE speed on Verizon is fantastic and overall the phone is a fine device, I could not get more then 8-9 hours of normal use out of it. Of course I could disable LTE and change other settings to get more battery life or add one of those extended battery bricks, but what is the point of owning an LTE phone if I have to shut down LTE to get through a normal workday? I think that a phone with default settings should be able to get through a normal day 12-14 hrs with battery power to spare. I have no issue with my iPhone in regard to this and until the device makers can figure out how to make an LTE device with decent battery life I will wait on the sideline.

I think its valid to point out the res because that is actually something that translates directly to something that inarguably improves user experience.

This is not always the case when say, comparing two processors that are a couple hundred Mhz difference.....or a camera with more MP's than another, or even screen size, where understandably some people would or would not prefer a larger screen/phone....

There is no subjectivity when it comes to display sharpness. Less is never better in that regard.

So there is no subjectivity when it comes down to what is visually pleasing to a given person? If someone says a screen with a slightly higher PPI is less pleasing then they are bat **** crazy and need education on sharpness?. That's what I'm getting at.

That's a very valid point. Internals or things that you can't directly observe holds less weight overall to the things that you can also directly observe depending on the argument at hand.

Personally, I love the retina display, but I don't love the fact that it's only so large. Text is crisper and everything just seems smoother, moreso than any Androud phone that I have used.

I just don't understand why someone would want a phone bigger than 4 inches flat. Ill admit 3.5 inches does seem rather small these days but lets be real 3.5 inches wasn't even an issue before HTC started throwing out these giant screens.

What I see in android now is that they are maturing as an OS. Its becoming more fluid, the screens are beautiful, but they still have a ways to go if they intend on gaining customers who are ecosystem aware.

It's impossible for android to get customers like myself to committ because I'm in tuned with what iOS has to offer and am not willing to give apples A class hardware up for cheap materials. It's comfort in knowing that the phone and OS I choose is supported by so many brands and companies. When I watch tv, I'm constantly seeing ads, commercials, and plugs telling me to download this app and download that app. These apps being advertised are always iOS apps. They are never android apps or windows apps. My phone and my OS is and will always be the best because it's able to offer me more as a consumer and provides me a stable environment to be entertained in and be productive in. It may never be the biggest or the fastest, but it's definitely the only one that the world can't live without.

Is the Nexus Prime and the Droid RAZR the same phone? If they are it's gonna be one fugly looking device....

Edit: After some searching I have seen that the Nexus Prime will be from Samsung (Cheap Plasticky Phone) and the Droid RAZR (will be from Motorola)

Everybody who thinks that plastic is cheap should watch this video. It might change your mind.

While the back looks like carbon fiber (or at least made to look like it), the edges look like a metal thing. If there's one thing Moto has right on the phones, it's the build quality. My Droid X is built and feels like a tank. No plastic showing, just glass screen, metal trim and a soft-touch rubber on the back and chin. The Droid RAZR looks like the 4G version of the Droid X so I wouldn't be surprised if it kept the same build quality.

The back is made of Kevlar.

This video was shot specifically for you and your glass affection. It clearly proves that Galaxy's metal and plastic are far superior to iPhone's metal and glass.

ok, so the sII is better at being dropped, big effing deal. most apple customers are known for taking care of their stuff. so here you go:

the sII can take a fall a little better
the iPhone works better

p.s. I will take a phone and ecosystem that works flawlessly over a cheap flimsy plastic donkey'ed up os phone any day!!

p.s.s. you know i'm right!

not to get into this argument, but to think that iphone customers are some unique group of people is silly, I can find a truck driver or a ceo carrying this device. its everywhere

When I first that $299 price tag, I thought this would feel like a rip-off. But considering it has 32GB and Apple has milked 32GB iPhones for $299 with contract for over the last three seasons now, I see that is reasonable. 4.65-inch S-AMOLED with a 720p res doesn't come cheap either. You gotta give some credit to these Android OEMs. They have only razor-thin profits, but they have to compete among each other too and work their asses off to pack as much features as they can. This is why it gets fragmented. They have to differentiate themselves from one another. They don't just compete with iOS.

Too bad Android phones drop in value for resellers faster than they can sneeze. Then again by Christmas, you might see a decent sale on the Galaxy Nexus that getting it at 32 GB for potentially $199 or less after a few months is better than getting a 16 GB 4S for the same price. Android seems to offer the best bang for your buck when it comes to horsepower. It just depends on how you use it.

I'll pass on this considering it is going to Verizon first. I am content with a pair of 2010 smartphones that I can tolerate using for another couple years if I wanted to. Single-core at 800 MHz - 1 GHz is good enough for me since many OSes aren't optimized for multi-core yet. This whole dual core advertising is just hype and I see no difference in speed or battery life and I am not a phone gamer to care about a better GPU. I will wait when multi-core is actually needed. We aren't there yet. My next phone is either Steve Jobs' final masterpiece which is the next iPhone or the next Nexus phone made from HTC or Motorola. Heck, maybe even try out WP7 since I never owned that platform before.

what I meant was, yes the iPhone has a lot of glass and they tend to be careful with their phones. yes it is rather fragile, but c'mon, you all know it is a far superior product than the droid phones.

It's funny you talk about "taking care of their stuff". Just out of curiosity, would that involve covering all that beautiful glass and metal with cheap rubber and plastic? Hmm...

And working better is arguable. People may say that the internet browsing experience is much more pleasant on a Galaxy s2, and that itunes is a very restrictive music player.

After all of this, you have to take into account that the iPhone is much more expensive than an Android alternative.
