Still don't need NFC. But do want a mobile payment solution and an eco-system that supports it.

Guess that's where users that prefer Apple products differ from others. Technology for the sake of technology is typically not something they start drooling about.

Its going to take Apple to make this a tread. I can definitely see more department stores and supermarkets adopting NFC payment now that Apple is moving towards this technology...... Sorry Samsung kids but you don't move the needle or start the trends.


Hey, look on the bright side Samsung kids, least there will be more places to use your NFC now. Thanks to Apple........

For merchants, this doesn't have much to do with either Apple or Samsung. NFC payments with your card are already pretty common. All that Apple or Google/Samsung is doing, is pretending to be a plastic card.

just wait till you actually get to use an NFC debit or credit card. It's quite a bit faster than a PIN card. You don't need to navigate through any screens or punch any buttons. just touch your card to the terminal and that's it. Plus, PINs need to be memorized. I have several cards and use the same PIN on all of them (I suspect most people do). This is far from ideal from a security standpoint. A physical signature is a terrible authenticator too.
 
I hear of NFC all of the time.

Is anyone versed enough to give me a nickel tour of how this would be relevant in the current universe of everyday life here in the US.

Where can I use it, how does it work?

Do I enter my AMEX cards into my iPhone, then stop carrying them?

Funny, I figured they wouldn't tie this down to certain hardware so as to give it critical mass as soon as possible. If it requires NFC (and therefore iPhone 6) then there's obviously no hope of it coming to 5S.

Considering Apple/iOS is still the predominant OS here in the US, that is likely why we haven't seen NFC payments explode. Other parts of the world, where Android is up in the 80%+ in marketshare have far more uses for it.

I think once Apple implements it, we might see an increase in places where it would be useful.

What I was saying in other threads was that Apple was waiting for a secure method prior to implementing a mobile payment system. Now that Touch ID is in place and established the next logic step would be to do it.

I had NFC on my Xperia Z1 + BlackBerry Z30. And now with the iPhone 5S I don't miss this technology. Payments via NFC are not available in the most EU States.

I believe the quote followed the lines of "At the moment there is no use for NFC, so we haven't included it, until there is a use we won't include it" Now the NFC payment ecosystem, has grown Apple can enter with a big impact.

In Canada, tap-to-pay is everywhere. I'm sure this will replace at least one credit card for now. Tap-to-pay secured with a fingerprint scan = huge savings for the credit card companies.

I already have a NFC debit card. But with mobile phone payments, you could enter your PIN while waiting in queue, so the payment process is different compared to a card.

No, hardly anyone around the world uses their phone for payment (yet). There is a sharp growth in NFC payments using NFC enabled cards though.

Its not quite common....when I see places like Target, IHOP, McDonalds, etc in my neighborhood use the technology then I'll deem it as common.

I have seen newer franchise stores use the NFC though.......

You know how it is. If Apple builds it they will come.

I remember people throwing around the "Who needs a big iPhone haha" about the iPad and how it would be a failure. We all know how that turned out.

I dont think thats an issue, as said by, lets call him "the blackberry guy" as i cant see his name at the moment, he can already do it on that and authenticates using his BB's pass code. So Apple would just use Touch ID instead of that.

Much slicker,easier to use and safer. And avoids any issues with someone finding your phone unlocked and keeping it unlocked and then buying a bunch of things with it as long as TouchID is needed even if your phone is unlocked.

Blackberry guy, is that how it works on your BB ?

Yes. Exactly like that. Although I wouldn't go as far as your gross exaggerations, but there were other phones that had pretty accurate and reliable finger print readers before the iPhone.

I know the iPhone has many other features, but when it comes to NFC.. my retired Nexus S from 2010 would like to say "lol".

Seriously now, adding NFC is fine, but don't make a big fuss out of it, Apple will only get laughed at.
