So you are going to tell me Tom Brady or Peyton Manning wouldn't thrive in a Jeff Fisher offense? I'm pretty sure either of those guys would still be perennial MVP candidates if all the offense consisted of was "go long and get open."

In a word, yes. He's been the coach 17 years and had an MVP QB one year with Steve McNair. Most Titans fans say the same.

@MacDawg: I agree with all of your picks more or less. I don't see the Ravens dropping to KC. Seattle winning would be funny, but unlikely. Jets - Colts. It'll be sloppy, but I think the Jets defense can get Manning to turn the ball over. Jets win on primarily defensive points. I'm going to side with Philly even though I think GB are the stronger team. I think Vick will put the team on his back and find a way to win.

Agree with all but the Eagles ... this weeks winners are Jets, Ravens, Saints and the Eagles ... I think we see some more magic from Vick and Jackson.

I won't be surprised if the Eagles win at all. It just depends on if Vick is healthy and plays well. He has been inconsistent, as has the whole Eagle team. If they are "on" they can beat anybody. Same with GB. Should be a great game.

Edit:

Chris Mortenson of ESPN just tweeted this

LATEST ESPN UPDATE: After meeting w Harbaugh, source says Dolphins have decided that Tony Sparano is the best man for job. Will be retained.

Looks like Harbaugh won't be going to Miami

Enough about Vince Young already... its the playoffs for god's sake :p

Jets at Colts
The Jets are a better team, even with all their distractions and lunacy. The Colts are not the Colts of the past several years. They are hurt and banged up and aging. But they still have Manning, and Manning > Sanchez who is hurt himself. Sexy Rexy has dissed Brady and praised Manning, but sucking up to Peyton won't help his team on the field. This is a tough game to call, but I think the Jets find a way to lose a game they should win, and the Colts find a way to win a game they should lose. I think this will be a sloppy game that goes back and forth and makes you wonder if either team deserves to win.

Ravens at Chiefs
The Chiefs have had a surprising year, and it is always tough to play at Arrowhead. But they have no playoff experience and this is an angry Ravens team. I want to pick the Chiefs, but I just don't think they are there yet. I think the Ravens run the ball hard and make some big plays on defense to win this game.

Saints at Seahawks
Saints blow the Seahawks out in the first half and coast in the second half.

Packers at Eagles
Probably the most intriguing game of the week. Rodgers and Vick, both great QBs and both with great weapons to work with. Can Green Bay go on the road to Philly and win? The weather won't bother them, that's for sure. What kind of game will Vick have and is he 100%? The winner likely comes to the Dome to play the Falcons. I don't look forward to either matchup. We lost in Philly to the Eagles and beat the Packers in the last minute at the Dome. I think Green Bay is hot right now and the Eagles have cooled. I'm going to pick the Packers to knock of Philly in a great game that goes down to the wire.

Well, those are my picks... all 4 road teams to win :p

How do YOU see these games?

Ah, not to be critical, but you did pick the Colts to win and they are a home team. But I won't be too hard on you since you are probably still emotionally distraught over the Bulldogs loss to the Knights. ;)

I think that the Colts will win in a more convincing fashion than you do (not that they will blowout the Jets), but other than that I think you gave a good analysis of the opening weekend of the playoffs.

I Still stand by my opinion ... the National Championship Vince won for the Texas Longhorns was one of the single greatest QB running games I have ever seen.

The bottom line is ... He can play some serious Football.

Running QBs don't win in the NFL. Look at all of the previous winners.

Vince Young has already proven he can play in the NFL at a very high level.

lol what. he hasn't proven anything. he's been a serviceable player at best, but he also causes distractions. has he ever won a playoff game?

He just isn't smart enough to be an NFL qb. It's too much of a mental game.

I don't know if I have picks right now, but I'm glad you laughed at all four road teams winning. That's pretty unlikely regardless who those teams are. I'm curious if its ever happened.

And FYI, if your team is in the playoffs this week remember to enjoy it. For any team that loses, this may be their last game for over a year. I'm trying to concentrate on the playoffs, but the lockout is looming.

Well, as ucfgrad93 observed and corrected, I did pick the Colts and they are the home team... my bad

It's not going to happen. The NFL and the players both know they will lose way more if they end up locking out a season. Look what happened to the NHL. I read something the other day saying 18 of the top 20 watched shows on television since September have been NFL games. Their ratings are the highest they have ever been. Do you really think they want to risk ****ing that up?

It won't happen if the NFL let's go of the 18 game season idea. I'd prefer it if the season was cut back to 14 games personally.

They, as well as the other sports, have proven they have the capability to screw up big time in this regard, without learning from the mistakes of the past or from others.

I hope it doesn't come to that, but I think there will be some stoppage, and a reduction of the pre-season games.

Yes, both sides see the ratings and popularity and the $$$. That is why neither side wants to blink in this game of chicken.

So as the playoffs approach, I'm wondering what everyone thinks of the new overtime rule that will be kicking in this year where the team that loses the coin toss gets a possession, even if the team that wins the toss scores a field goal on its first possession.

It could certainly change some strategies, but probably not significantly. Note that the rule only applies to field goals scored on the first possession, not to subsequent possessions and not to touchdowns scored.

I heard an interview on the radio where Peyton Manning was reminded of the rule and was shocked. I think there is a lot of folks that could get caught if it comes to that.

Odd to implement a rule for the first time only in the playoffs, the most important time of the year, and for OT, the most critical time of the game, that might confuse and confound things

It will certainly change strategies for down, distance, time... everything

The stranger thing - the vote was in March, I believe, so the rule has been in the books (as it applies to the playoffs) for awhile. It will be in effect for all OT games (regular and post-season) starting in 2011-12.

I do believe it will change some strategies - particularly if you're in a 3rd-and-5 or 6 in FG range. But in the end, it's only for the first possession. If you don't get into FG range on possession 1, then the rule has no effect.

Personally, I'm torn on the rule. Sure, I'm not a big fan of a team winning the toss, having a reasonable return, getting 12-15 yards offense and winning on a 50 yard field goal, but if that scenario happens at the end of regulation for a win, it's no big deal. So why is it in OT?

The stat used to justify the rule, as I've seen, is that 59.8% of the time the team winning the game in OT won the coin toss, and 34.4% of the time it was on the first possession. I'd be curious what percent of those first possession wins were field goals and if this rule significantly alters the percentage of OT games won by the team winning the coin toss.

I don't like the OT rule. If they wanted each team to have at least one possession, then they should have said so. I can see it sort of like college, except that there is a kick-off and if the first team gets the ball and scores, the other team has an opportunity to to the same. However, there is only one guaranteed possession, after that it is sudden death again.

Harbaugh to the 49ers

Closer to home than Miami and an easier conference
Doesn't have to play the Pats and Jets twice a year

Anybody think the Broncos have a hard time getting a premium coach because of Tebow?
I know the Falcons' OC Mularkey canceled with the Broncos but will interview with the Browns

Just wondering if a coach would...
A. Feel locked in to having Tebow as his QB and balk at that
B. Not want the drama of removing Tebow for someone else and constantly being criticized for it

I am sure they will get someone, but will it be a top line coach or will they have to settle?
I would think Denver is a better job than SF or Cleveland without the Tebow factor

One more awful year, and I'm sure Houston wouldn't mind giving them Kubiak back.

I haven't read any of the reports, but I wonder if his decision will have any bearing on Luck's decision to stay at Stanford.

Maybe Michael Vick will prove this statement wrong

I don't think either is truly a running QB
But VY is nowhere near the level of MV
Vick is a different QB than when he was with ATL
Much of that has to do with the difference in perspective

VY has physical skills
But he has none of the mental aspects of an NFL QB

He isn't close to Brady, Manning, Brees, Ryan, Rodgers, et. al.
Look at Sam Bradford... and look at VY

I would take my chances in the draft before I would take a look at VY

FWIW, Josh Freeman is everything VY is not

Luck is staying
He has said he would regardless of Harbaugh's moves

Says he wants the college experience, the degree, to be with his GF, to win a championship and experience things that won't come around again

As for QBs ... everyone will have their opinion. I personally never liked Marino or Elway ... I thought Jim Kelly was better than both.

And the way people talk about Manning being the greatest ever makes me laugh ... IMO,he is not as good as Joe Montana, Joe Namath, Terry Bradshaw, or Troy Aikman.

even though I am not a Brady fan ... he also belongs among the best

Not too long ago ... Michael Vick was the highest paid Football player ever with a 120 million dollar contract in Atlanta.

^^^
I don't think Manning is the best ever either
He is very good, but his whole career he has struggled against the best
When he was at Tennessee, Florida and Spurrier owned him
The year he left, Tee Martin wins the National Championship there

In the NFL, Belichick wore him out for years

Kelly was an awesome QB and what he did at Buffalo during his run was amazing

Marino's teams underachieved despite his gaudy stats

Montana, Brady, Young... leaders, champions
There are clearly others, and I don't think you can say a "best ever"

Wow, Chris Mortenson's tweets are very revealing about the Harbaugh/Miami/Sparano situation
Not sure how well that marriage will work out down the road

Sparano did refuse to participate in presser on Friday; he will be there at noon today.

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland, who was very close to Sparano before Harbaugh pursuit, will maintain he was always in Sparano's corner.

What Ireland regrets, I'm told, is that he didn't communicate more thoroughly with Sparano as Ross pursued the Harbaugh meeting.

How does Sparano feel? It didn't go well Friday, sources say. Still frosty w/ the GM but the owner is new..and the owner is the owner.
