No owner will fire a coach who won 11 straight games coming into the playoffs. 13-3 and division champion will make any coach's job secure, unless, those 3 losses were all crucial games in the end.

Tell that to 14-2 Marty

Right..Tell that to Marty "14-2" Schottenheimer..The Chargers haven't exactly done well in the post season the last few years, despite being a high seed and having some very good talent..You can only ride the regular season for so long..And given some of Turner's moves yesterday,he's the second coming of Marty..Whenever a coach, coaches to not lose, very rarely do they win..

They are playing great, but they're just this year's version of the Atlanta Falcons. Next season they'll finish at 7-9.

I don't think so. This team was close to being 12-4 if either Sanchez didn't get picked or the defense not showing up.

Make no mistake, we have flaws (see WR) but this team is just gonna get better.

Uh... this team was close to finishing 7-9 before their last two opponents pulled starters.

True, but their 9-7 record is now valid since they have beaten two very good teams on the road, no matter what happens in Indy.

I'm not arguing that point at all. I'm saying this team is better than what you give them credit for.

True, but their 9-7 record is now valid since they have beaten two very good teams on the road, no matter what happens in Indy.

And if the Jets somehow beats Indy... let's just say Giants Stadium won't have to be demolished by a wrecking ball.

^If the Jets made it to the AFC Championship, I'd crap myself.

Open the floodgates.:D

Would love to see the Jets beat the team that bent over and let them in the playoffs...With their D,it's going to be a great game.

Yes, yes, yes. If there is any justice in the world, the Jets will win. Rex Ryan's name will be spoken in the same breath as Broadway Joe [Namath].
I'm a Jets fan next week. After that, I'll either be a Jets fan or a Viking fan.:p Can't stand the Colts or the 'Aints.

The Jets' success has less to do with Sanchez than it does with the Jets' defense and running game. After all, the Ravens won with Trent Dilfer.

He may well develop into a good QB, but right now, he is just a caretaker who needs to protect the ball and give his team a chance to win.

Excellent point.

I just hope that Sanchez could at least be as lucky as Trent. Come on guys, give the poor 63.0 rated Jets' QB a break. ;)

At least Sanchez knows better than to make risky passes like Favre and Warner, both of who can throw deep into coverage and hit their man pretty consistently. Others have thrown deep hoping to get lucky not knowing who was down field and got lucky (like half the AFC hail Mary stars from Stabler to Big Ben) but I don't see Sanchez even getting lucky. If anything he has this incredibly bad habit at throwing at nothing.

But somehow I really like this guy since he reminds me of Spade or Heder from the miracle team from the movie, "The Benchwarmers". The very best Sanchez could hope to do is to get his skills up to the middle of the pack, which would still be great. Aikman and Bradshaw were in the middle of their peers in their day.

Even if Sanchez is no Tom Brady or Peyton Manning doesn't mean this team won't do well in the next few years. Perhaps they may not make the playoffs in the next two years to where they are now, but hopefully by then Sanchez will have some ability to pass with accuracy and avoid interceptions. If their D remains strong, then the Jets can become a real threat in the NFL.

Myself being a minority from a heavily Hispanic rural Northern California, Sanchez (Mexican-American) is kind of a folk hero here not unlike Mexican-American Jim Plunkett (Stanford, 49ers, Raiders, 2 Super Bowl wins). You don't have a lot of Asians, East Indians, Native Americans, or Mexican-Americans in the NFL. :) Sanchez, like Plunkett, does not put up impressive QB rating numbers, but gets the win. In the end, it's the win that counts, not how many TDs you have vs. interceptions. And for us Californians, Sanchez was a USC guy!

Little bit of irony
Schottenheimers are smiling

It's no secret that there is no love lost between San Diego GM A.J. Smith and Marty Schottenheimer, who was fired following a 14-2 season in 2006 because Smith didn't think he could coach the Chargers to a championship.

"I said at the time," Smith recalled, "that we needed to find a head coach who can handle the pressure and make some noise in the playoffs."

The only noise made Sunday by the Chargers, now coached by Norv Turner, was a resounding flop, as they were upset by the Jets in San Diego, 17-14, in a game in which the pressure clearly got to them.

How else to explain the rash of penalites and personal fouls called on the Chargers, as well as the three missed field goals by all-pro kicker Nate Kaeding, who missed only three all season?

So it had to be extremely satisfying to Schottenheimer that his son, Brian, was calling the offensive plays on the sidline for the upstart Jets and their rookie QB, Mark Sanchez.

Edit:
Does Tebow play in the NFL as a QB or an H back in the wildcat,or a TE?
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/01/sports/ncaafootball/01sugar.html
After Being a Florida Icon, Tebow Becomes an N.F.L. Question Mark
The opinions on Tebow are diverse. For everyone who sees Tebow as a franchise quarterback, there are just as many who project him as an H-back.

“He scares me,” said Brian Billick, the former Baltimore Ravens coach who will be part of the broadcasting crew for the Sugar Bowl. “You love the kid. If there is a fair God above, he’ll have a successful N.F.L. career.”

Billick said he spoke with five N.F.L. personnel officials and none of them had Tebow graded in the first round. Billick called Tebow’s throwing motion “scary,” noting that his delivery started near his knees. He said that he liked a comment made by Lou Holtz, the former Notre Dame coach, that Tebow would have been the first linebacker taken in the draft last year.

Does he play at all?
or will he be a bust?

On another note... ESPN reporting the Bills will likely name Chan Gailey their new head coach

Really? I mean, really??
C'mon, you're interviewing Leslie Frazier, whose defense just demolished the Cowboys, and you are going to hire Chan Gailey?

Woof, Woof - Dawg

It's the Buffalo Bills and Ralph Wilson..Who stuck with Dick "Coach to not lose" Jauron till they didn't have a choice..Chan Gailey tho
Report: Gailey expected to be next Bills head coach
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 18, 2010 5:17 PM ET
We have a new leader in the clubhouse for the Bills head coaching position.

Jay Glazer of Fox reports that Chan Gailey is expected to meet with the Bills for a second time Monday. Barring a breakdown in talks, he should be named the coach in the next 24-48 hours.

It's a stunning turn because Gailey's name has not been mentioned previously for the job, and his meeting with the Bills last week was in secret.

Gailey, 58, would not be a particularly splashy pick for the Bills. But he would fit G.M. Buddy Nix's profile: He's an offensive coach with head coaching experience.

Gailey ran the Cowboys in the late 90's and has offensive coordinator stints in Pittsburgh, Miami, and last with Kansas City. He was the head coach at Georgia Tech from 2002-2007 and is known for a run-first approach.

We can't help but wonder if Gailey's name came up when the Bills pursued Bill Cowher. When Cowher stepped down in Pittsburgh, he recommended Gailey to be his successor.

Don't understand this one at all..Sheridan was hated in the Giant's locker room. Not too mention the Giants run a 4-3,and the Dolphins a 3-4
Bill Sheridan lands in Miami
Bill Sheridan did a fine job in four seasons as linebackers coach with the Giants -- good enough to inherit the defensive coordinator position once Steve Spagnuolo became head coach of the Rams.

As defensive coordinator with the Giants, Sheridan did well enough to get fired after only one year.

So now he'll get another crack at being a linebackers coach, with the Dolphins. Specifically, he'll coach the team's inside linebackers.

The Dolphins announced the move this morning.

The Giants used a 4-3 front for all of Sheridan's time there. Miami employs a 3-4 attack.

Another head scratcher:
Dolphins hire Nolan
Yesterday at this time, Mike Nolan was the defensive coordinator of the Broncos.

Today, he's the defensive coordinator of the Dolphins.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the deal is done.

It's still not clear why Nolan and Broncos coach Josh McDaniels mutually decided to part ways. But, apparently, Nolan had a bird in the hand before he bolted from the Broncos.
Denver's D was improved over last year's D. Don't get it..Unless McDaniels is doing to get his old pal Dean Pees to Denver??

Raiders have been interviewing head-coaching candidates
And the similarities between the Raiders and the Redskins continue.

The Redskins interviewed at least one head-coaching candidate before firing Jim Zorn. The Raiders, according to David White of the San Francisco Chronicle, have interviewed at least two, even though they already have a head coach.

The candidates for the vacancy that doesn't yet exist are former Giants coach and current Las Vegas Locos (UFL) coach Jim Fassel and former Raiders offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, a long-time NFL assistant coach who currently runs the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL.

Per White, the Raiders might interview Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and/or Packers assistant head coach/inside linebackers Winston Moss. It's possible that one or both men already have been interviewed; both were considered for the job last season, before it went to Tom Cable.

An interview of Moss would satisfy the league's Rooney Rule, which requires at least one minority candidate to be considered for each head-coaching vacancy.

Other potential candidates, as we've heard it, include Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh and former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach.

So it appears that owner Al Davis plans to size up his alternatives before deciding whether to pull the plug on Cable. And Davis apparently has more options than most thought would be interested in the job.

As Buffalo G.M. Buddy Nix said Tuesday while introducing new Bills coach Chan Gailey (via ESPN), "Don't ever think you can't fill coaching jobs, even if they're bad. Oakland gets a lot of call."

Nix then added, "Don't say I said that. I wish I hadn't."

It would have been better if he'd simply closed with, "Boom. Roasted."
Fassel?Trestman?Gilbride?Oh Al,what are you thinking??Leach wouldn't be a bad choice..He got a raw deal,IMO..

Whomever Al Davis chooses, it'll be the worst possible choice. IMO, his gone over the deep end. I can't remember any recent 1st rounder the Raiders have chosen who hasn't been a bust. It's sad to see one of the greatest minds in football collapse so completely. Black Hole doesn't describe part of the Raiders' stadium anymore, it describes the Raiders owner's mind.

Al Davis needs to had over the reigns to his GM and whoever is going to be Head Coach (hopefully Cable). They got better after he benched JaMarcus Russell.

Great, we have a senile owner for the Raiders, and one who doesn't know jack about football for the 49ers. It's a tossup which team head office makes weirder choices. And I am proud to say I am from the SF-Oakland Bay Area, the other "bay" that was once known to have great football teams (sometimes). :)

Al and the Raiders will always win that toss up..I think he's there until he passes on..

When that happens, can you PM me? ;)

No, just kidding. That's in bad taste. I wish Al a very happy and quiet retirement away from football.

Now while Al has the excuse of dementia, what excuse do Niners' owners Mr. and Mrs. York have?

Kenny Stabler must shake his head whenever he looks at Jamarcus Russell. Not to mention the contract he got..

I am so hoping this trend holds up.

On the plus side, Manning blows big games like most of Elway's big games used to go like in the first 3/4s of his career, or blow them like Jim Kelly did.

On the negative side for the Jets is that they are 9-7, right? It seems so inconceivable that the Jets ramped up their game that much and Indy fell that far.

The Jets, who I will be rooting for as if they were my 49ers, have to sack Manning's old, battered body over and over. If you haven't noticed, guys like Manning and Favre take longer to get up whether they get sacked or are on the bottom of a late hit. The Jets will have to play an old '70s style "black and blue division" style of football to beat Indy. I wouldn't expect Sanchez and the jets O to suddenly become a tight knit west coast offense and put up big yards.

Like mentioned earlier, Sanchez could be like a Trent Dilfer, protect the ball, and let the team's defense take it to the opposing QB. I am more scared for the Jets going against Indy than I would if it were somehow the Vikings or Saints.

Manning could be in his last, or next to last season, and I don't rule out that one day he may go down and never fully recover, as it appears to be with Brady, so this could be Manning's last real shot for a second Super Bowl. Manning will be hungry as hell for this one.
