I've a bit of a soft spot for the MDD G4. In our studio at work, we've got each of the various flavours of G4 present, plus G5s, and I think that the MDD has the best look overall – a nice balance of power and friendliness.

Of course, given the fact that I'm sat all day at the MDD may have something to do with it – everyone always thinks their own kids are the cutest...

portable: 17" powerbook, it's a sexy beast

desktop: G4 cube, i have two of these babys and they are the best

everything post B&W G3 is excellent to the degree i'd have a case just to look at, bar the toilet seat ibook, they were, odd.

These threads are as tough as they are fun :)
Nice to see the PowerMac G4 MDD mentioned alot, considering that was bashed alot for performance reasons...

Time taken in perspective, my top 6:

1) Cube
2) PowerMac G3 Blue & White
3) PowerMac G4 MDD
4) Mac mini
5) PowerBook G4 17"
6) Colour Classic

It seems that Mr. Ive has something to do with it.... ;)

• iMac G4. The most stunning design ever. It was too expensive, it was underpowered for much of its life, and the 20" model was totally irrational, but it was gorgeous. It makes me gush whenever I see one in person.
• Quicksilver Powermac. Simple, yet elegant and functional.
• Aluminium Powerbooks. Just so… logical. Everything's where you'd expect it to be, everything's in perfect proportion, and they're just a testament to what computer design should always be. The white iBooks are similar.

The worst design I've ever seen has to be the Dalmatian and Flower Power iMac G3s. Just why?

It has seemed to me that the folks @ Apple have continued to refine their designs to higher and higher level. They've consistently turned out products (since their mid- 90's beige phase) that have improved on the generation before (one exception could be the click wheel which I don't like the look of).

My favorites in no particular order:

iMac G5 20": I'm biased becase I just got one but I just think it is an amazing object. Wasn't blown away when they first came out but god it looks good on my desk.

iPod 3G: Love that it's all white, love the touch buttons.

17" Powerbook: Beautifully proportioned and the Aluminum casing looks great in the bigger size. And the screen is amazing.

PowerMac G5: Looks good from the outside but pop the side off and look inside for the real beauty of the design.

Not my Favorites:

iMac G4: Never cared for them.

The Cube: Thought it was cool at the time but looking back it looks kind of clunky.

Clamshell iBooks: Would've loved to have had one 5 years ago but they're definitely not standing the test of time.

The Worst:

My first Mac, the PowerMac 7500, was butt ugly but not as bad as the Performas.

Well, I agree that my <understatement>7500 isn't the nicest design Apple has come up with</understatement>... But I think, at least, the 8600 was worse...

...what's with the extra pizza box stacked up against the casing...?

I remember being jealous of the 8600 when I had my 7500 because it was a tower and had the cool extrabit attached to the side.

imac g4 and the cube.

imac g4 was so much nicer than the new gg imac that just looks like pcs. it might be more functional but the last generation was so much more sensational. this new one is not.

I think the absolute winner would have to be the g4 iBook. It is simply stunning to everyone who walks past you. just today at school I had mine on a table in the lounge and everyone who walks past the flock of laptop users gawks at my iBook. Maybe its the glowing apple, or the white plastic, but everyone loves it, myself included.

I have to agree. The G4 iBook in 12 inch guise is one of the best looking laptops, nay computers out there. As a side note though, all recent Apples look beautiful apart from maybe the eMac... A little too bulbous for my liking.
