A camera is an essential feature of a phone as most of us love taking pics. Apple have outdone themselves with the quality of the cameras by the looks of things. Of course real world use pics are what I want to see.
Agree. Pro photogs can do magic with far inferior devices, in worse conditions. It will be interesting in October to see some amateurs snaps.

Anybody know if there are any good Telephoto attachment lenses under $300 for the iPhone 11 ?

That's the price differential between the $699 USD 11 & $999 USD 11 Pro.

I wish Apple had priced the 5.8" Pro @ $899 USD, that would have made it an easier decision, especially considering that 5G iPhones will be announced this time next year.

I was going to get the 8+ in the refurbished store, but this feature (night mode) on the 11 is making me doubt about it...

Portrait mode for everything with depth control + night mode puts the 11 over the 8+

Don’t be “that guy”. People want to live life. They want to capture moments. They don’t want to be oh let’s not take these pictures in a bar because they light is just not “quite right“. The whole smart phone camera revolution made it so those spur of the moment pictures look a thousands times better than they use to (I’m talking about every brand not just Apple). That’s a good thing.

Exactly, Apple pushed this and wide angle because other phones made it mainstream and desirable, just like every Android phone got a 'portrait' mode shortly after Apple made it a thing. These low light images could most likely be done on iPhone 7+ upwards, though.

I think they're saying the same thing that others noticed when google first posted pics like these a year ago. The 'before' pics look like their blacks are crushed in post because smartphone cameras would try to expose all areas and get grainy images instead of completely black ones. Many of the 'before' photos look doctored or darkened.

The only time I've ever taken a photo with that much dark area in it was at night with no lights nearby or in a dark closet with the door closed. If there's a light on in the room, the picture would never look that dark.

It can be that dark, especially if the user is trying to put the focus in the middle of the picture.

I only tried the modded Night Mode from Google on a nexus 5x, but the results are truly stunning in the sense that it goes from very dark to much lighter. Of course for the nexus 5x with an old camera you have to hold very very still to get the results.

A very good read on the subject:
https://ai.googleblog.com/2017/04/experimental-nighttime-photography-with.html

My speculation is that Apple’s implementation is going to make worse shots but be a little more user friendly. It won’t be able to take photos of the stars in the sky as the next Pixel is rumored to, but will likely not require holding still the camera for too long and give a pretty ok result.

Probably because they are taken by professional photographers who know what they’re doing.
It’s a dark room. There are only two options, it’s that good or it’s doctored a little. There is no third option.

Cool, except I would like to see how these compare with the current Night Mode king, the Pixel 3 series night mode.

To me, it feels like Apple is grasping at straws trying to justify why people should upgrade to the iPhone 11 line. Night mode? Meh. Slofies? Really? lol. I'm pretty disappointed in this year's hardware announcements overall and for the first time since launch of the iPhone, I won't be upgrading this year.

So with all the splashy news about new Apple services and devices this week, where is the reporting on how much tariffs are affecting the pricing scheme on new iPhones, iPads? I'd really like to see MacRumors do some reporting on this issue rather than constantly discuss new devices.
Price relativities in various countries are pretty much exchange rate related. For example in Australia the iPhone 11 is AUD$1199 including GST. After GST removal that works out as AUD$1090, or about USD$740 @ today’s exchange rate (Apple always gives Aussies a little Apple Tax touch up, it helps remove exchange rate risk, miraculously always in its favour. On this phone it works out about 5 cents in the dollar, which to be fair, is less than usual).
So I would say there has been no RRP impact of the tariffs in evidence, otherwise the phones would be relatively cheaper in other countries. But fear not, the price rises you are hoping for might happen closer to the presidential election.

I want to know if low-light videography has changed/improved. I see no information regarding this, as the aperture hasn’t changed too much even since the X. I record video all of the tine with my X, and am looking for better low-light.

I guess Apple designed a high end pocket camera, then stuck a bunch of phone guts around it. Hopefully, the rest of the phone will catch up wih the camera. 2020 should be interesting.

If there is one thing that pulls me towards iPhone 11 Pro, it is the new camera system. Interested to see the reviews and comparison with Xs.
It’s the same on the 11, without regarding the zoom (telephoto) lens. I’m on the fence, because you’re essentially getting the exact same system on the 11 and 11 Pro without that 2x zoom.

Still don't really get the idea of taking photos in the dark. Great photography requires great use of light. Not shooting pictures in a bar.
And I still don’t really get the idea of removing the thumbs down button from MacRumors years ago, and yet here I am looking at your post.

Like someone else said, don’t be that guy. People go to bars. People like taking pictures. If a photographer like me can understand this, then anyone should be able to.

These developments have been years in the making. From all manufacturers. Whoever has the first phone go on sale is deemed the “winner” in innovation...because the tech media and consumers are just downright stupid in looking at technology advancements YoY instead of understanding development cycles.

It should automatically be better than the X because of the X's massive design flaw that put the flash right between the lenses

I would like to see a comparison with the flash being used as well.

Always useful to see more comparisons, but the flash wouldn't provide even remotely close to the lighting changes shown. The flash in conditions that dark will typically creates harsh, overexposed elements in the closest foreground and shadows everywhere else. If those photos translate to real world, that will be a major improvement over previous iPhones.

One concern is that it appears Night Mode is automatic, but what if you want a photo with lots of shadow? A shot of a concert in a night club or shadows against light that add to the photo, not everything evenly exposed. The invention of HDR has kinda tainted expectations around photo exposure. Brighter isn't always better.

That’s the point.

Are you familiar with how Night Mode works? It takes several exposures and merges them together, resulting in a brighter image in which anything moving ends up blurred. Hence my skepticism that this was Night Mode, since the moving subject is not blurred.
