On the other hand, I'm running in the Nike+ shoes, and my sensor seems to be in need of some calibration - a 5k run measured out with the GMaps pedometer is only being reported as a little over 4.6km on the iPod.

I think the accuracy of GMaps Pedometer is the issue there. On routes that I've measured with my car's odometer, Gmaps is always less accurate than the iPod.

Well, I decided to get ballsy. 20 minutes with an exacto knife and a dremel, and I have a sensor in the sole of my new balance that looks like it was put there from the factory. :D

We'll see how it works tomorrow.

Don't know if anyone's interested, but the sensor worked perfectly in my custom shoe slot this morning. Of course, the damn thing said I was out of shape. Who knew

:p

I wouldn't doubt that - in particular I think it loses a lot of accuracy on curves. I did just do a quick test measurement on GMaps Pedometer of our local college's running track, using the start and finish lines for the 100m, and the measurement was recorded at .1001km, so for straight lines it seems to do ok. So clearly there isn't some weird localized curvature-of-the-earth issue causing GMaps to be 5-10% off where I live :)

So I've set up a 0.35 mile calibration route to run tonight, from the straightest part of my regular course, measured with painstaking accuracy on the highest zoom satellite level that GMaps offers. If the voice feedback still wants me to run further once I'm done calibrating, well, I guess I'll just have to train harder...

1. Max music volume was very low. Voice feedback volume was excellent. This seems to be the same problem shambolic is having.

A possible cause - The volume limit was set when we first plugged in the Nike+ receiver.

I experimented with the volume limit when it was first introduced, but haven't used it in a long time (quick check - yes, mine's set to maximum), and have reset the iPod several times since I last used it.

I suspect this is a software bug that will be resolved in the next update, my only other thought is that I have "Sound Check" enabled in the settings, which is the only other setting on the iPod that affects relative volume of tracks. For my next run, I'll switch this off and see if it helps.

Securing the sensor...

For now we're just using a thick rubber band in the "U" fashion for security - don't want to watch it go flying. The rubber on plastic grips nicely.

Also my girlfriend is 5' and after 2.5 miles the Nike+ was off by over .25 miles compared to my GPS. We've driven the route, GPS'd the route, and Gmaped it. So the routes about as acurate as it's going to get without wheeling it off.

Anyone know if the system can track multiple runs on the same day for the same runner? I realize the the ipod will grab the information with no problem, but when I update it to my nike site, what will happen? Will it overwrite the old one, not accept the new one, or just mark them as #1 and #2?

Yes, the iPod will store data for many runs. They all get uploaded to the Nike site when you sync.

Right, but how about multiple runs for the same day. I haven't used it much, but from what I've seen, it sorts your runs by date. If there are two sets of data for a single date, can it handle that?

I'm assuming you're saying that my ipod will store more than one run. IE if I take it on vacation, I can upload all of my data on my return without having the most recent run overwrite the one from the day before that's still on my ipod.

i see what you're saying. that's a good question, cuz i'm sure i'll end up running more than one run in one day eventually. if you do 2 runs in a day, let us know what the nike site does with them.

Yes it can. Notice I did multiple tests on July 14th. They were all uploaded at the same time.

By any chance, did you input weight and calibrate the sensor? My sensor was .25 miles off until I calibrated it

We calibrated it after a few runs but haven't tested it yet. I wanted to see how accurate Nike's "90% out of the box claim" was.

Our reading of 2.75 miles on a 2.5 mile run is exactly within Nike's 90% accuracy claims. Of course 90% accuracy isn't that impressive - it's just playing the averages. A 10 mile run could be +/- 1 mile. I'd hate to run a marathon and hear "1 mile remaining" when I really had 3.6 miles to go.

Nike says the sensor is 97% accurate after calibrating. We'll see today.

Hey! I got these day 1 of the demo at Mt. Laurel NJ, Dicks Sporting Goods, and have really enjoyed all the posts about them. I am a New Balance runner, but, since I already had the Ipod, and I went into dicks that day to buy new kicks anyway, I figured I'd give nike another shot. I have to admit I have not been this excited about a nike shoe since I bought my first Nike Bruins in 4th grade! My first two runs have seemed accurate, and the nike chick's voice seems hot, and I think she is making me go faster? The shoes are not nearly as comfortable or supportive as any of the new balance I wear, but I am hoping to adjust, and am gonna give that time to occur before I take a pen knife to my shoes like some of you other brave souls!

I have friends all over the country that run, so I am hoping they get the running group part of the site together so we can join and inspire each other. And of course they need to clean up the results as it listed one dude clocking in at just under 3000 miles for the week!

Good luck to everyone that has it, and thanks again for the valuable info on this forum. Anyone download any "training" mixes from Itunes, yet? I am waiting til they have celebrity ones yelling at me for going to slow. I am hoping for Mr. T.... "RUN FOOL, RUN!!!!!"

I had the same problem with the Nikes, although I opted not to purchase them. I debated rigging up something on the tongue of my new balance, but finally just went after them with a knife and a dremel. I'm really glad I did. The footbed is just firm foam covered with a knit material, and it came out quite easily.

I pulled out the insole. Put the sensor on the footbed and traced it with a sharpie. Then took an x-acto knife and cut along the traced line to get through the knit layer. Once you're through that, all you have to do is cut at an angle with the knife to remove that layer. Then a flat grinding wheel on the dremel worked perfectly to even out the foam for a perfect fit.

I know it sounds like a lot, but it took all of 20 minutes and was a breeze.

Thanks munckee! Keep me posted how they wear like that, if it becomes worse over time. I wondered if cutting into the sole of the shoe, would undermine the support that I like so much about them? What Number new balance do you wear? I broke my ankle a few back, and I like the stability of the new balance alot. Your foot feels supported.

I am gonna try mine again today, and then a long one tomorrow...that might make it or break it for the nike ones!

Australia

Does anyone know when this will be out in Australia? I am really keen to get one of these things

No problem. I wear a 706. I'd be really surprised if it affected the long term wear. Honestly, I can't even feel the sensor in the shoe. The hole really isn't all that big.

Unfortunately, I'm just starting to get my butt back in shape, so it'll take me a while to get the mileage count up.

Just a silly very important question: If u put "kilometers" as distance settings instead of "miles": is the spoken voice is still telling you ur speed in mph or in km/h, and distances ever ran too (kilometers and not in miles)?? or is just on the nano screen?? thx

Anyone else have this problem?:

I set a distance goal yesterday. After today's run, everything synched correctly everywhere else, but my distance run toward my goal was only half of today's run.

Here's my experience with this: in the Nike+iPod settings, my preference is set to miles. All the stats on the Nike+ site, and the readout on the nano and on the voice feedback, will give measurements in miles and pace in minutes-per-mile, except if you do a distance-based workout where the target distance is in kilometers.

e.g. if you do a 5K distance workout, the pace displayed on the nano and on the voice feedback will be in minutes-per-kilometer, not minutes-per-mile, even if your preferences are set to miles. I don't think this can be changed, so I'm just having to learn to convert the pace in my head. However when I sync up the iPod to the Nike+ site, the stats then get changed back to minutes-per-mile.

oki thx but what about if u put "kilometers" in ur distance settings????? is the voice still speaking about miles or kilometers??

yeah, i set a goal for miles in a month, and it says i'm way ahead of my goal, but i'm really not that much ahead, if any. i don't know what the deal is
