how "proprietary" can a 2.4Ghz radio signal be?

WiFi operates on 2.4Ghz. iPhone already has the tranceiver. It is a matter of signal processing, which I would think would be mostly software-based.

The iPod Touch has it. Nano does not, and nano isn't WiFi enabled, either.

I doubt iPod Touch as a separate transceiver in the 2.4Ghz bandwidth just for a shoe sensor. I doubt the hardware is that much different than iPhone, other than not having the cellular and bluetooth hardware.

it has to be something software related, I would think. And Apple wants to have a reason for people to buy both an iPod Touch AND an iPhone, if they can.

they have pulled this either/or junk before. Either their way, or the highway.

What's bugging me is, won't if you run with your new iPod nano, wont it keep on skipping and shuffling your songs...Well i guess there will be some sort of a setting that you could turn off when you work out..

AHH I HATE APPLE FOR DOING THIS! THE TOUCH LOOKS SO SEXY NOW THAT IT HAS ALMOST EVERYTHING THE iPHONE HAS.

2.4GHz is a very broad term. And don't forget there is about 2.4 billion possible frequencies, so no WiFi ≠ Nike+iPod.

It doesn't have the phone part, but the stainless steel back does look cooler and sleeker.

huh? I'm an electronic engineer, so I do a fair bit of communications design. Still don't understand how you got that figure.

Besides, it's not like they can't bring out a new dongle that operates on WiFi or Bluetooth, or even a new dongle for the phone side of things.

I thought the same thing, lol. "Shake to Shuffle" feature would mean one annoying run.

Owners of the first-gen iPod touch, the iPhone and iPhone 3G are locked out, because of the technology required to connect the device to the receiver in your shoe without using the standard dock connector dongle. Apple also said that even if you Quote:

Really now - "shove in the dongle" is the best way they could think of phrasing it?

In my opinion, the iPhone/iPod Touch feels too big for Nike+. Same thing witht the Nano. Granted it's not as big as the iPhone/iPod Touch, it's still distracting to carry it while running. I just resort to my Nike Sportband and a shuffle if music is needed.

It could be very different... Try to receive Bluetooth with a WiFi chip. Just sharing the frequency band does not ensure compatibility.

Still, I am curious, what kind of communication system does Nike+ use?

In the end, I am amazed at the vitriol over this. Just use a GPS based app, much much cheaper, more accurate and track a lot more info.

God damn it... I've waited 14 months for this?! It's all flash, there should be no problems here! If the 1st gen nano had enough power to use the dongle, then the iPhone should! The only thing stopping this is greed!!

i honestly have no idea why anyone would want to jog with an iphone or touch strapped to their arm. the thing is too big and clunky to be practical for running.

In my mind, the iPhone and the Touch are too big for runners to be lugging around but the Nano is just right.

What are you people, Smurfs?

I'm pretty pissed about this blatant product segmentation. All the more reason to get a Garmin Forerunner when I need a replacement.

Ahh! Double F-U to Apple today.

I refuse to buy a Touch when I have an iPhone 2G and 3G. But being able to use Nike+ with my iPhone would be quite welcome--I wouldn't have to buy anything else to replace my dying first gen Nano.

I agree that the Touch is too bulky to use for serious running (but I would have made do with my iPhone), so why doesn't the Nano have the built in reciever? Integrated Nike+ with the Nano would have been ideal.

I'm seriously fed-up with Apple (this combined with ****** iPhone software, no new MBP's or MBA's is seriously annoying). Perhaps I should just get a Nike Sportband and Zune and be done with it.

Steve Jobs (in has gay ass Levi's) can suck it.

Jesus. If you hate Apple that much then why do you care about what they announce? Sure, they're not perfect, but their products are almost there. It doesn't make any sense to bundle a Nike+ receiver into the nano. The point of the nano is to be as small and as thin as possible. A speaker would make more sense (which the iPod touch got). The nano sells millions, and I'd say less than 1% of users would want Nike+ functionality.

As for me, I'm not very happy with no Nike+iPhone... but I'm not really understanding the reasons why. When the iPod nano came out it didn't have Nike+ functionality -- that's why we bought the dongle. Can't we just stick the dongle (or a new one made specifically for the iPhone) into the connector?

Yeah, how about the time I got hit by a car when running with my Nano, not my iPhone. Would have been nice to call 9-1-1. Just my $.02. True story.

Here's another thing, I hope the DevTeam has avid runners onboard.

Do a lot of people use Nike+?
Nike+ was actually the only reason I purchased a nano (nearly 2 years ago now). I have even convinced two friends to purchase nanos and Nike+ sensors! I had never been a runner, but with Nike+ I could not wait to get home from work so I could go running (actually so I could go run then get home and sync that run! ;)). Totally love it.

Prior to this, I saw the iPod family as being stylish, but essentially an overpriced MP3 player that was 2x (or more) the price of other comparably sized players, and getting by on the consumer sheep (got to have it because everyone else has one) mentality.
BUT, since owning the Nano, I have purchased a MBP, a replacement 3rd Gen Nano (do to the 2nd Gen failing) and now an iPhone. Apparently, I am the picture of a iPod springboard customer :p

As far as Nike+ being available for iPhone, I think I remember a statement from Apple a year or so ago saying they did not want to have it available to use with the iPhone, as it was more delicate than a Nano, and they did not want to encourage people to run with it. No idea if that was an 'official' Apple comment or a blog/thread post, but stands to reason IMO. Although, when I recently got lost while running, it would have been nice to have a phone with me!

Wow, Apple isn't supporting a lot of stuff for the iPhone. This, tons of charging accessories, the new headphones... why did I buy this thing again?

I bought Nike+ running shoes assuming Apple was the company it was 5 years ago and would support it on the iPhone as well as the Touch...

BOLLOCKS..

Ugh...

So what, is there a workaround or something? There can't be any new chips inside the iTouch, they wouldn't do that just for a bloody pedometer, it must be wifi, in which case..

Get hacking.

Actually, I was more surprised that they added the Nike+ receiver to the Touch than disappointed by it. In my mind, the iPhone and the Touch are too big for runners to be lugging around but the Nano is just right.

I personally hate it when ppl say this. I just hate hearing it, who is apple, or nike, or anyone for that matter to tell me or anyone else what is or isn't right to run with? On one hand apple tells you here is the all in one device. The only thing you'll need with, not only the iphone but also the imac. They both send that brand message. And they they contradict that whole philosophy with this nike plus crap.

for the last four years they've been playing this convoluted game, and to continue it is ridiculous. all they've done with this whole thing of pigeon holing you into buying another ipod to use this feature is alienate people. at this point I'm over it. I'm finding another solution.
