Nike+ will interfere with 3G signals...

The reason why Apple decided not to put Nike+ support for the iPhone is once thing: Interference with Cellular Signals....

Although proprietary, Nike+ signals are somewhat similar to the cellular receptions, so if Nike+ is enabled on iPhone, it will cause any cellular signals, SPECIFICALLY 3G signals to go haywire....

I know this, since I carry my iPod nano with nike+ and iPhone when I go for my morning run, and I have noticed that my phone said no signals, in the area where I usually get signals.... When I went for a walk without my iPod nano with nike+, I get a perfect 3G reception......

Remember, 2.1 is supposed to fix A LOT OF 3G RECEPTION ISSUES, not make them worse by adding Nike+ support that causes cell reception to go haywire.....

I completely disagree, I believe that Apple had to keep some things exclusive to the iPod Touch, and some things exclusive to the iPhone - they have this ongoing problem of how to keep both devices appealing, and trying to cater to as many potential consumer groups as possible. They've been working hard to give the iPhone the reputation of a respectable business capable phone. I think adding some whimsical running gadget would undermine its desire to be a smart pocket computer with cellular capabilities.

I'm glad they are trying to make the iPod Touch distinct in subtle ways, rather than continuing making it turn out to be the iPhone's lepracy-diseased brother.

I don't know why so many people want the silly little feature in their phone, I would certainly be annoyed if it was dropped in the midst of running. It's more of an essential-use day-to-day product, where you can store your calender, schedule, contacts etc. You can do all that with the iPod Touch - but an dedicated Digital music player doesn't seem quite as important as a phone IMO.

No joke, I had REALLY BAD RECEPTION ISSUE with my iPhone 3G when I had iPod nano with nike+ attachment nearby..... all my calls went haywire, dropped calls even more frequently then normal, etc....

Like I said, 2.1 for iPhone is supposed to fix cell reception, not make them worse by adding nike+ compatibility, and when a user attaches the nike+ kit, all cell reception goes haywire.....

Although I think iPod touch 2nd gen is trying to be more of "stand out" by putting exclusive feature, such as nike+.

it needs a radio?? and my arse plays the banjo! the accelerometer could do a fine job of tracking how far we run!

It's a money-spinner, I tell thee....

As a Nokia phone user, i dont have much room to complain, but there is a nifty feature/free app/web service from Nokia for their phones with built in gps or a bluetoothed gps dongle, its called SportsTracker. It uses GPS and the accelerometer on my n95-8gb and keeps track of my runs, down to how many steps, my pace, fastest and slowest parts, even the music i was listening to and a bunch of other crap i dont pay attention too. After the run, i can upload it to a website that nokia set up that overlays it on to a google map and keeps track of my progress. There is even a cool calendar view on the phone that shows shows the exercises you did each day. It supposedly even has geotagging, so if i take pictures of stuff during my run they get uploaded too, but im usually too busy running to take pictures o_O but enough about the the wonders of Nokia. If the SDK is as robust as apple claims, or the jailbroken appps are as cool as they can be, someone should be able to create an app similar to Nokia's SportsTracker. That way you wont have to give money to nike, and dont have to have extra parts to keep track of.

They don't need to release a new accessory to get the existing attachment to work on the iPhone. Just write drivers for the dock connector (indeed, really even the dock connector shouldn't be necessary).

And they haven't because the iPhone team are obviously falling way, way behind schedule - they're not even managing to get *announced* features out on time, never mind new ones.

I suspect Steve is aiming his death ray at that team leader as we speak - taking out the big feature (push) that Steve promised in this release, AND missing the keynote deadline for only bug fixes? No wonder it only got a begrudging passing mention.

I'm sorry, but this is nonsense. The Nike+ frequency is absolutely nowhere near the frequency range used by either the 2G or 3G systems.

If the Nike+ set put out that sort of interference it'd be illegal to use in the US as it would never pass the FCC tests. That's what they're *for*.

Hahaha :D Absolute nonsense. It would be banned across the globe if crossed into cellular frequencies. Seriously dude, think before you type.

Anyway so can we expect a software hack to enable it on the iPhone? The Nike+ is effectively a little proprietary wifi chip, it's interfacing with the iPod Touch's wifi connection so there's zero reason it wouldn't work with the iPhone.

My (euro) cent: If it is a matter of interference, I think it's with bluetooth (more than with cellular freq.). I assume they're using a sorth of encrypted bluetooth protocol, or something very near. That would explain why it works on touch and not on iphone. But whatever it is, I find it ridiculous to say it can't be done. It would be a matter of coding an extension that comunicates with the nike dongle (the receiver) and stores the info from the sensor in the shoe. Maybe allowing to disable bluetooth or even radio while running.
The ones pointing out that apps with gps are better and more accurate are probably right. But 2g does not have gps. And moreover, the cool thing of the nike+ system is it's website - much more than the rather poor and inaccurate functionality.

i'm sure they will release a new receiver for the dock and the next version of the iphone will have it built in. but seriously, 2.1 software is a bust, great, more battery, more stable ... but where are the big features, gps, push notifications were supposed to be here by september, what a let down

Or they could release a bluetooth/wifi version of the shoe sensor/transmiter...

I can't believe they didn't include the option to run the Nike + adapter on the 1st Gen Ipod Touch. I was very disappointed when I heard this yesterday.

My guess: THIS version of Nike+ won't work on iPhone. It doesn't mean that it will never come on iPhone...

Probably there will be a specific version that will use GPS, sold thru App Store of course. You know, ipod touch doesn't have GPS... and every similar app created until now on iPhone uses it to track the running in a smooth way.

It makes sense, and it will make a lot of money to Apple and Nike.

Forget about hacking it to use the foot sensor, hack it to use the GPS and fall back on the foot sensor only if GPS isn't available or you choose to use the foot sensor since you're on a treadmill!

I use Path Tracker (an app I wrote) on my iPhone 3G to record my hikes and runs. Last week I recorded my entire 5.5 hour ascent of the 14,259 ft Longs Peak using Path Tracker.

You can save your paths to the web, where you can view your paths on a map along with distance, time, speed, and other info at every GPS point.

If you tried an older version of Path Tracker, the newest version 1.4 released a few days ago adds the option to turn off real-time maps, which significantly increases battery life and makes it easier to use the app without a good 3G connection.

it seems pretty obvious to me that apple feels they need to try and seperate the iPod Touch from the iPhone as much as possible...giving it features that the iPhone doesnt have...

makes business sense to stop it cannibalizing sales

you gotta laugh how all of a sudden some poeples iPhones are useless now lol

I'm sure many will not be happy about this, but IMO the nano is a MUCH better choice for running anyway. Actually, what I use is a nike+ sportband, and a shuffle when I want music. Minimum obtrusiveness. :)

Yes, but some people would be happy to be able to get calls when they are running...

old news.

literally anyone who knows a bit about technology could have realized this yesterday. Nike+ integration is hardware and as we all know, the iPhone is not a white box -- you just can't change things.

No surprise IMO, although it does stink a bit.

bummer, i've been anxiously waiting for nike+ on the iphone. Apple and Nike prob. talked about it before the 3G was released and they never got the proper equipment/software ready for the 3G deadline. i am seriously disappointed, even bought the Nike+ shoes in anticipation of this release. what do you do...?

Do a lot of people use Nike+?

Well, some people do, certainly. And most of them seem to be here on this board. But do a lot of Touch owners/buyers want it? I suspect not, but I have no idea.

I'd have much rather had Bluetooth.

I'm actually pretty miffed about this. My wife always complains I never take a phone with me when I run, its mainly because I dont like carrying loads of stuff and already take my Nano for Nike+. When I saw that Nike+ was going to be built in to the Touch (and therefore I thought it would be coming to the phone) I was pretty stoked as I could still use my Nike+ and also carry my phone with me.

Am now just annoyed.
