I'm actually pretty miffed about this. My wife always complains I never take a phone with me when I run, its mainly because I dont like carrying loads of stuff and already take my Nano for Nike+. When I saw that Nike+ was going to be built in to the Touch (and therefore I thought it would be coming to the phone) I was pretty stoked as I could still use my Nike+ and also carry my phone with me.

Am now just annoyed.

Yeah, basically makes yesterday's event 100% worthless to me now.

Well, I'm a bit confused as to why Apple would be giving new features to the iTouch while leaving the iPhone gimped..

At this point, and after waiting to read about the features before I posted my silly ass rant, I have to say that when you look at the Touch many people may ask why the heck they'll pay virtually the same price for an iPod when they can easily get a phone too. Forget talking to me about AT&T sucking and such, that is not what this is about.

The Touch has to cater to people as well so putting features in it that aren't immediately available on the iPhone makes it marketable. iPhone users aren't being cheated any more than Touch users were cheated when they were forced to pay for upgrades and such.

The Touch is now a very handsome device offering features you will not see on the phone. This is business. I think Apple did it wrong with the new $80 in-ear phones not working with the iPhone but that's another rant of mine.

Either way, and TBH, I can't see why I'd ever want to run with a Touch anyway. I'd run with a nano and a shuffle, but the Touch seems to be slightly too large for my liking in terms of fitness.

sad

I just love how apple pulls features from their top of the line products with out any real rational, the early Mac Pros lacked front row that could be found through the rest of the computer line up, and STILL lacks a true apple solution for webcam

but like most iphone users, I own a NIKE+ but don't use it because i can't justify buying another ipod, sorry apple you already sold me one in my iphone!

we know it's not that the software won't work, and i can say that I'm sure it would be a simple task to rewrite the app to accept the dongle.. apple could at least told use why it wasn't avail.... but possibly like front row they will see the error of their ways and fix it....

so... 2.2.1 or 2.3 give use NIKE+ and if they really want to make runners happy support for bluetooth headphones

is it just me or why would you want to go for a jog or run with a heavy iphone anyway? That's what my nano is for..

Personally I would rather not, but my wife doesnt like the fact that I go off for a 2-3 hour run along the river with no method of contacting her if I have a problem. I'd put up running with the iphone, if I didnt need to also carry a Nano, to make her happy. As is, I'm not carrying both!

crazy

seems pretty dumb to me that they release new product (iPhone 3G) literally 2 months before announcing this, and even though this product is a high end product (full price of $600-$700), but unfortunately, it will not work with the $30 attachment that our new $230 ipod will work with. Way to treat your "higher" end customers apple. screwed up on this one. lame

I for one think it would be far too bulky to be carrying the iPhone to jogging but then its also stupid for Apple to release the iconic game changer iPhone 3G just month before the iPod and not include the same feature set!

At any cost I prefer Nike+ with the nano, a fatty that I own and the new curvy that I intend to purchase soon! Also, recently purchased the Etymotic ER6i and do not require a new pair of earphones! But still I'm really disappointed in Apple that they prioritize a $230 device more than a ~$700 (unsubsidized) device in this regard! And I also believe that Apple will make up for this sooner or later!

Why would they leave Nike+ functionality off of the iPhone. That's just plain stupid. Honestly, there's no need for the foot pod with the iPhone 3G since there's GPS already built in that's FAR more accurate then the foot pod anyways.

Big mistake.

What a bummer, Radio Freq excuse is BS. I wish Reebok or New Balance could make a BT system.

Agreed and from my previous post you can also infer that I'm really saddened by this!

While scrounging through I came across this app: Runkeeper! $9.99 but real real nifty! Only missing feature is the Nike+ web!

Then buy a super cheap and super slim phone to run with. I'm only saying, there is no way they're going to put the features of a Touch in an iPhone, there has to be some separation between products aside from the call functionality.

What Apple should have done is to work with Nike to release a new Nike+ system which uses either Bluetooth or WiFi to communicate with external peripherals. Nike could then release a full iPod/iPhone fitness system which includes both a pedometer and a heartrate monitor. It would fit in well with the rumors several months ago about Apple's patent application regarding a fitness system.

Unfortunately, the likely culprit keeping the iPhone segregated is simple economics on Apple's part. They know that Nike+ purchasers are going to consist largely of hardcore runners who will be willing to shell out $200-400 for an extra device. Apple wants these people to own both an iPod AND an iPhone if possible.

Is Apple acting exactly as any responsible corporate entity would act? Yes.
Does it suck for iPhone owners? Yup.

Run Keeper is okay, but all that is is just a mileage tracker. they don't have any plans to add in the capability to do interval workouts, which you can via the Nike+. Honestly, I'm going to have to break down, buy a mac and write my own App. I'm tired of waiting. As much as I love my Garmin 305, I would love to have all that capability, built into an iPhone app. How cool would it be to blast music based upon the pace your running. Some up tempo beats for 5K pace, and then some nice easy slower beats for those easy run recovery days.

You're having a laugh aren't you? I am not buying *another* phone just to take running with me. As said above, I don't carry one now and wont bother carrying one with me in the future as I a) cant be bothered carrying another device and b) am not forking out for another phone for the privilege.

As I said in my message, I am not that fussed about running with my iPhone, but it would have been a nice feature to have had and I really can't understand why they haven't put it in. It's not as if they wouldn't have known they were going to be adding it to the iPod Touch when the iPhone was released - its more irritating than anything else.

The only reason for my post was someone asked why you would want to run with an iPhone so I answered.

Actually....I submitted this very idea to their iFund, and was turned down. Exactly 7 days after I received the Dear John rejection letter, news hit about the apple patent approval.

Well, I'm a bit confused as to why Apple would be giving new features to the iTouch while leaving the iPhone gimped..

Very simple. They are two different products. Apple wants to differentiate the two lines. I expect more iPod Touch and iPhone differences in future versions as well.

uuh uuh why... :(

I love running (besides loving my iphone and whatnot), but I guess they won't be making a dongle just for the iphones and the old ipod touches...

I guess this is purely marketing... throw away your old stuff and buy our new and shiny ones... I hope they'll add nike+ into the new iphone next year. it would be good for me because i'll be using my 1st gen iphone for 1.5 years. good time for a new upgrade.

It's a cool stuff, but it wont affect me in anyway when I run. ;) so lol...

I played around with my friend's nike+ it's quite cool. even though I (will) buy only adidas stuff, it's not that difficult to hook up the transmitter chip onto my shoe.

I have a 3rd gen nano and iPhone 3G. Whenever I run outdoors I always keep my iPhone in its case (which has a belt clip) incase I need to make a call and use the Nike+iPod nano to run.

The iPhone may be delicate but so is the iPod touch.
I would love to use my iPhone with Nike+, with or without an external receiver.

I actually would buy the iPod touch right now if I had a job (I'm typing this at an Apple Store and they have 16GBs in stock, though no demo units out yet) not just for the Nike+, but because I don't want to waste my iPhone's batteries playing games anymore.

However, I still think Apple should have added support for all iPod touch (1Gs) and iPhone (2G and 3G) for Nike+ since I see no reason not to.

The reason why Apple decided not to put Nike+ support for the iPhone is once thing: Interference with Cellular Signals....

Although proprietary, Nike+ signals are somewhat similar to the cellular receptions, so if Nike+ is enabled on iPhone, it will cause any cellular signals, SPECIFICALLY 3G signals to go haywire....

I know this, since I carry my iPod nano with nike+ and iPhone when I go for my morning run, and I have noticed that my phone said no signals, in the area where I usually get signals.... When I went for a walk without my iPod nano with nike+, I get a perfect 3G reception......

Remember, 2.1 is supposed to fix A LOT OF 3G RECEPTION ISSUES, not make them worse by adding Nike+ support that causes cell reception to go haywire.....

There is a few details missing. For one what carrier is it? The other thing is what tech is your network? CDMA, GSM, etc. The other factor missing is that each carrier uses different bands.

Is this actual confirmed news? I'm still hoping on Friday this turns out to be incorrect and Apple lets us all in on a Nike+ app that uses the GPS for the iPhone.

I agree, it seems everyone is missing the point.
Why would you want a step counter? GPS is far more accurate.
