I've never had any issues with it... what exactly makes it useless?
Let’s see here; if you breathe on it, it’ll turn on AppleTV, it slips out of your hands at a moments notice, it’s got a glass panel on it (a friend dropped hers, glass shattered, then when she picked it up, she got a shard in her hand), when you pick it up, you have a 50/50 chance of it being oriented correctly, fast forward and rewind are a PITA, pick it up an hit the touch pad accidentally and who knows where you’ll find yourself in your show. It really is a poor design that should be shelved with the 1st gen Pencil and the current mouse with the charging port in the bottom.

My now ancient 3rd gen has been do for an upgrade even though it's still perfectly capable. Honestly I'm just wanting separate profiles and Apple Arcade support. I'm actually low-key stoked for ATV's future!
I think you mean 4th generation...Apple Arcade is not supported on the 3rd generation Apple TV.

Needs FaceTime support, + a purchase option for a bundle including a camera (perhaps resurrecting the iSight brand in the same way MagSafe has recently been? Or just FaceTime camera).
I’m wondering how long before TV manufacturers put cameras in the tv so that Zoom can be native on the TV?

This reminds of those commercials for trash bags where people dramatically show they can't seal them easily and they break and all the garbage falls out. And in comes the new hefty trash bags! See how easy it is!

I've never had any of these issues with the apple remote. I have 2 apple TV's and have had them for years. No accidently turning on. No glass shattering, no issues with dropping it, no issues with orientation, Fast forward and rewind are the best of any remote I've ever used as it's quick and easy to scrub through video. And I have streaming devices from roku, amazon, NVidia and others.
Even my kids can use it easily.

I don’t see what they can improve other than the gpu for gaming. Quick Media Switch using HDMI 2.1 would be nice but I don’t think its worth the upgrade, all other 2.1 features are 4K@120 gaming related so it’s useless.
There is a lot to improve trust me. Lot of things they can add

Yes I know, profit margin are slim. Even by Android Phone standards. ( That is why all Smart TV are collecting your Data to sell )

But I still wish Apple do something about it though. Right now Large Screen Display ( TV ) experience are just awful. They could partner with LG where LG sells the TV with Apple TV integrated by default. And not as an App. ( Think of it as the LG 5K Monitor ) Apple continue to earn the margin they have with Apple TV STB, LG able to earn slightly higher margin with Apple TV being an easier sell.
What could they really offer? Yes, I agree most native TV interfaces are awful but I don’t think Apple TV is necessarily great, I must add that they have the worst remote in the industry.

They already partner with LG for the screens, LG makes screens for iPhones, iPads, Mac Books and monitors. Apple also sells official LG branded monitors for their computers, I do not see really a win for LG there other than selling them more panels.

I have a 78" curved Samsung UHD/4k with a pop-up camera. Originally intended for Skype it can be used for Zoom or whatever. However, as nothing is encrypted, and I use Apple TV, I live in in the 'depressed' position (it's a pop-up so not always visible). I'm not sure if that's the only TV that has been made with such a feature (this was the last year of the 4k 3D top-of-line Samsungs; and it remains a superb TV.

Yes @jsalda - as @stockseer indicates, the answer to “how long until” is actually “how long since”.

I also have a Samsung television set, from 2012/13, which includes a little camera embedded in a ‘bump’ atop the thin glossy metal bezel (shape-wise, it’s almost like the inverse of the notch on iPhone).
It has a small plastic roller control around the back of the set, to allow you to slide a lens cover over. After trying out the camera with a gimmicky ‘mirror’ app included with this smart TV, I closed the lens cover and haven’t used it since. My reasoning is I don’t trust the security of the TV’s OS or the poorly-supported apps it hosts (many of which over the years have been rescinded or stopped functioning after changes to the services they’re supposed to work with).

Now, if Apple brought a camera to the Apple TV (in the form of a wireless / nice HomePod-style fabric cable-connected unit that connects to the Apple TV) - using the hardware & software technology they’ve developed for iPhone - and bolstered its utility with a FaceTime app for tvOS (including upgraded features for tracking & focussing on multiple people), that would convince me to purchase & use a comms camera in my living room. It would be well-supported, secure and private.

The use-case is pretty straightforward and should be relatively easy for Apple to ‘sell’ - families wanting to chat, in comfort from the couch, with other family members situated elsewhere on Earth.

No more arm-ache (from holding the iPhone or iPad up), and no more squishing-up/schooching-up to get in the (iPhone/iPad) camera’s field of view…

This will be fitness+ related. Mark my words.

U1 chip - spatial awareness is the clue. This could mean measuring pace and form alongside current metrics.

Fitness+ was designed primarily for home workouts, it makes sense for Apple to introduce further sensors on the Apple TV for these workouts.
I agree about fitness+ but think there will be at least one SE model (firestick like) to enable fitness+ on extra screens without the atv price tag.

Hmmm how hard are you breathing on it as the only way to turn on an ATV with the Siri remote is to press the Menu or Home buttons.

Never had this issue, yeah I’ve knocked it off the arm of the sofa a few times but it’s never just randomly slipped out of my hand as I’m not a butter fingers Lol
when you pick it up, you have a 50/50 chance of it being oriented correctly,
Nope not had that issue either, I put it on the arm of the sofa or the table next to the sofa in a certain orientation and it’s still that way when I go to pick it up again the next time.
fast forward and rewind are a PITA,
Not the best I agree l, but it’s pretty simple once you know how to do it, press down top left or right to fast forward and rewind, however it can be easier to just press pause then swipe left or right.
pick it up an hit the touch pad accidentally and who knows where you’ll find yourself in your show.
Can’t say I’ve ever done that myself, I’ve just tried some random swipes of the pad and you’ve got to swipe up to even bring up the progress bar, but you still can’t move anywhere unless you press and hold the top left or right to rewind or fast forward.
You can’t even swipe left or right for it to move to a new time point without pausing first, but even then you’ve got to hard press down on the pad to make it select that point.
It really is a poor design that should be shelved with the 1st gen Pencil and the current mouse with the charging port in the bottom.
I quite like the design myself, never had an issue with it.
I’m sure some people make some of these issues up.

What Apple really needs to do is build a set-top box that is distributed to Xfinity and all major carriers to replace all of my Xfinity boxes. I would love for this to be a PS4/Xfinity box all in one. Apple has the resources to get into the cable game and gaming industry. Cutting the cord for me isn't a solution. I still prefer daily cable surfing.
There are already cable/satellite services that use the Apple TV as their set top box. Apple doesn’t needs to change anything, Xfinity needs to write the appropriate app.

All I want is spatial audio support so I can justify the purchase of Airpods Max. Otherwise current AppleTV 4k is plenty enough for media consumption.

Being in EU, automatic refresh rate changing in different apps could be better. But I guess this is more for app developers. For this reason I'm using Samsung Smart TV apps more than Apple TV.

Smart TVs have come a long way - the user experience is almost on par with Apple TV and I fully understand why people don't see a need for an another set top box in their setups.

I'm expecting U1, spatial audio, HDMI 2.1, and a LiDAR to be a part of it. I also think a U1 added HomePod will launch alongside.

While I applaud your efforts to defend the Siri Remote, it's easy to see why the remote is so polarizing.

By making few adjustments, Apple can reach the middle ground.
  • Rework the Glass Touch Surface to reduce accidental trigger: For instance, the surface can go to sleep after few minutes of accelerometer inactivity. To wake it up, click the surface, push a button, or engage the accelerometer by moving the remote for few seconds. Don't want it? Make it a setting.
  • Asymmetric design: More buttons will make the bottom side less empty, helping users better orient the remote.
  • Speaking of more buttons, many folks want sleep and mute, among others.

Maybe it’s just me but I just can’t see the need of a mute button on a streaming device.
If I need to mute then chances are I’m also not watching, even if I’m watching then unless you’re using subtitles then you’re missing any dialogue so for me personally I’d just press pause and play again when I’m ready to continue.
Also why the need for a dedicated sleep button when all you need to do is press and hold the home button and then select sleep.

They wanted for a long time, with Jobs famously saying “finally cracked it”, meaning that he thought of the simplest TV with iCloud and stuffs, a couple of pictures of the supposed TV even leaked... but then realized they could not compete with the likes of Sony, LG and Samsung in the TV market so they stayed with the set-top box business.

Cook, being the businessman that he is and not a tech enthusiast as Jobs, asserted that the margins would not make sense... people keep TVs for too long and they could not charge any premium to set them apart from companies that had been doing this successfully since the 60s-80s.

Here is a few reads if you are interested:

Nobody knows what Jobs meant by that.
