More scratch resistant as far as I read, yes. Crack? Don´t know. I`ve got a AW SS, Sapphireglass as new. Stainlesssteel with some scratches. I`m sitting in a wheelchair and when i drive I knock the watch sometimes at a glass door etc. Can´t complain. If I read about those who destroyed their AW Sports when they passed a door etc. ...Is not sapphire more scratch resistant than Gorilla glass, but also easier to crack?
I feel we are going to be disappointed though. It will be some kind of collectors/anniversary edition in the first few months. In februari they will catch up with demand. And by september 2018 all models will have this design, but with an upgraded soc and camera' s.
I can already imagine the complaints.
I can' t wait for the iphone 8 plus though, 6.6 inch oled anyone? Have to wait until october 2018 though.
That'll never happen as it would kill the iPad mini sales.I can' t wait for the iphone 8 plus though, 6.6 inch oled anyone?.
That's exactly what I would do in your situation.I just got my 7 Plus last October (first iPhone ever after switching from Android). I'm going to wait until Apple gets all the bugs fixed with their new form factor. An 8 plus would be great though...should easily match up with a Galaxy S8 Plus or Note 8.
Given that the iPhone has an average selling price of $695 (and that comes from a mix of maybe 2:1 4.7" vs 5.5", and with the latter being $100 more expensive, the ASP of the iPhone Plus is probably about $760) and that the ASP of the iPad is more like $450 (with the ASP of the iPad mini most likely below $300), Apple should be very happy for every iPad mini user switching to an iPhone Plus. The only risk is if iPad mini sales become so low that the entire line isn't profitable anymore. If this results in the discontinuation of the iPad mini (or very slow updates), then the lack of an 'affordable' and compact iPad might have negative effects on the overall valuation of the iOS ecosystem. That'll never happen as it would kill the iPad mini sales.
There might still be fanboys on this site that consider the SE a phablet.Do you consider a phone with the outer dimensions of the current 4.7" iPhone to be a phablet?
You're quite correct with your observation. It would be incredibly harmful if Apple had to say "come join the iOS revolution; starting at $695" as opposed to "everyone is welcome; starting at $299". Some people have to dip their toe in first without fully committing to contracts.Given that the iPhone had an average selling price of $695 (and that comes from a mix of maybe 2:1 4.7" vs 5.5", and with the latter being $100 more expensive, the ASP of the iPhone Plus is probably about $760) and that the ASP of the iPad is more like $450 (with the ASP of the iPad mini most likely below $300), Apple should be very happy for every iPad mini user switching to an iPhone Plus. It's called Samsung galaxy S7 and it has a great display.I want OLED on a 5"device
But I think this is a relatively big 'If'. In particular given the disparity between the iPad mini price and the iPhone Plus price, I doubt that there will be a huge exodus from the iPad mini to the iPhone Plus. I thus think that the effect on the iPad mini sales will be limited and even if this reduces the profitability of the iPad mini, I think it is pretty unlikely that this shift would prompt Apple to discontinue the iPad mini line, exactly because they know the value of a low entry price. That is the reason they sell previous generation hardware and sometimes even create special models (the entry-level iMac with 2.5" HDD and MacBook Air CPU comes to mind). You're quite correct with your observation. I just feel as through the closer iPhone screens become to iPad mini screens Apple will lose interest in the iPad mini. They lost interest in the iPod once the iPhone came along as the iPhone did all the iPod did and more. This will be the same situation if iPhone screens start encroaching iPad screen real estate territory. But I think this is a relatively big 'If'. It is the oleophobic coating that is the real problem.Sapphire doesn't help much against breaking. It is the best material against scratches but Gorilla Glass is significantly better than standard sapphire in regard to not shattering. Note though that Gorilla glass is not just a chemical formula or a specific polymorph of that chemical formula but also a production technique that results in positive compressive stresses in the glass and that some of the techniques used in the various Gorilla Glass variants could possbily be applied to sapphire as well.
That'll never happen as it would kill the iPad mini sales.
My guess is "iPhone".
Just "iPhone".
Too lame?
My guess is this bottom function area will be the iPhone's "Touch Bar", may even be called that, and will probably by programmable in the same way. Apps will be able to put augmented controls there.
Say, how would this work when you have the phone in landscape mode? Or upside down? How will you even tell which is the top when you pick it up with the screen off?
I think it's not a zero sum situation. Apple wants sales of both if possible. You think apple gives a damn about sales of a 299 ipad mini if they can get 1100 for an iphone 8 plus in 2018?
Perhaps that is the reason the ipad mini won' t be updated anymore?
The iPod (besides the iPod touch) is a very much less capable device than the iPhone. A better comparison would be the iPod touch, which is essentially an iPad 'nano'. The iPod touch never had a screen size advantage over the iPhone (it now is even smaller than most iPhones). And you can see the lack of updates to it as a confirmation of your prediction but it also shows the worst case scenario (ie, same or smaller size than the iPhone, whereas even a 6.5" iPhone 8 Plus would still be smaller than a 7.85" iPad mini). And the worst case scenario still has the iPod touch as part of the portfolio, even though the last update was almost two years ago. But until the release of the iPad mini in 2012 (which added a new, lower-priced entry to the iOS world), the iPod touch was updated mostly yearly (the 2012 iPod touch update came after two years of the previous version).I just feel as through the closer iPhone screens become to iPad mini screens Apple will lose interest in the iPad mini. They lost interest in the iPod once the iPhone came along as the iPhone did all the iPod did and more. This will be the same situation if iPhone screens start encroaching iPad screen real estate territory.
But Apple also has no problems with cannibalising its own products.I think it's not a zero sum situation. Apple wants sales of both if possible.
Ok, but where are the rumors of a new ipad mini? Most rumors are stating the ipad mini won' t be updated this year.I think it's not a zero sum situation. Apple wants sales of both if possible.
What will be the iPhone line up be in 18 months time then? An iPhone 8+, as you stated, but will this years 8 be updated to a 8s? or will it not be updated at all to bring this years design and next years 8+ technically in line. Or will Apple really sell a 8+ and 8s in the same year?Ok, but where are the rumors of a new ipad mini? Most rumors are stating the ipad mini won' t be updated this year.
There will be an all screen iphone 8+, same design as the rumors of the 8, in the same footprint as an iphone 7+, with a 6.6 ich screen, believe me, we' ll just have to wait another year and a half.
Lol, straw man much??
Obviously no one has ever said or even hinted that anybody wants a less durable phone (which I'm CERTAIN you know); however, the fact is given the choice between beautiful, but not as durable, or ugly, but more durable- the VAST majority will choose the fashionable choice.
This is obvious by the amount of "specialty" super protective case sales vs. fashion case sales.
Anyways... I'm not vindictive, so I won't bookmark your post to rub in how wrong you are when this gen blows all previous sales records out of the water.
Cheers.
We want a beautiful object not a piece of resistance object. When you buy a rolls Royce you take care of it,you don't "scratch" it or hit it
Maybe just start PMing ppl if you want to have a private conversation with only them?

If this phone doesn't have at least 5.5 inches of usable screen then I'm not buying it. I'll keep hold of my 7 plus.
I need a phablet. The S8 + is packing 6.2 inches of real estate. I can't turn that down. I have to get it. If Apple can't make the iPhone 8 with a big screen then I'm not buying it.
I'm willing to pay the Apple tax to get features that have been on android for years but I'm not willing to sacrifice screen size.
That'll never happen as it would kill the iPad mini sales.
Yes I do think that's why I posted "will this years 8 be updated to a 8s? or will it not be updated at all to bring this years design and next years 8+ technically in line." I thought that was clear, I was literally saying the 2018 will be on par with this years iPhone. At least one 2018 iphone will certainly be on par or more advanced than the iphone 8 of this year. Don' t you think?
