IT'S HAPPENNNNING!

I hope they don't screw up Mario Kart with IAP. Just set a price and I'll pay it up front.

A legal Game Boy emulator, where I can In-App Purchase my old favorite games? Yes please

Yep I reckon they could even sell official controller accessories...etc too. Hopefully Nintendo does this all the right way and releases quality ports rather than going for the money grab.

Guys, check out other sources on this news. They're not porting old games to smartphones:

I think that's more to do with simultaneous releases than a suggestion that old titles won't eventually make it onto smartphones, etc. So, you won't see Mario Universe for the Nintendo NX released on the iPhone, for instance. Nothing saying that Mario Land: 6 Golden Coins won't show up.

Yay Mario! Not familiar with the legend of Zelda but i i'll give it a try

Just wondering, does anyone know why wikipedia claims Zelda game (1986 version) was a history game changer?..is it the story?

Because to me it looks like Bomber-man with a less interesting gameplay and background story
Remember not a hater just curious

If you want Zelda now, check out Oceanhorn. One of the better games I've played on iOS.

....only a few quality games...

If I buy a PS4 I know I will get to play in excess of twenty or more quality games over it's lifespan, however with a WiiU the only reason I would buy it is for the less than five decent games it holds, at best! And after all that within two or three years the console has lost more than seventy percent of it's value!

As an adult, your criteria is different. On the Xbone and PS there are very very few games I can let my 5 year old play. Both because of the content of the game and also the difficulty. Nintendo however offers a bunch of games appropriate for young children. Kids are not concerned about resolution or features. Only experience. And Nintendo seems to get that.

It's time Nintendo concentrated on what they do best, a handful of legendary game franchises! Bring them to the platforms people ARE using and leave the hardware side of it behind...

This is what became of SEGA, they became a software company (outside of arcades). They have been forgotten about.

It's interesting. Whilst we're not going to see the next big Pokemon or Mario games on iOS, we'll definitely be getting those micro/mini games that have started appearing on the 3DS.

Playstation did something rather neat. A few years ago they started Playstation Mobile, a service that let you play specially developed games on both the Playstation Vita and Android devices.
But they've very recently announced they're discontinuing it. I always imagined this was the way forward - create a game that works on both the manufacturers dedicated system and a mobile device. But I guess it isn't.

Nintendo are really leaping forward recently. Firstly their recent Pokemon games have been the best selling ever (both the current games and last years), they've recently got Monster Hunter 4 which is selling incredibly well, and they also announced they sold $1billion worth of Amiibos only 1 month after they launched.
And now they're also going to be selling small mobile games with their world-recognised IPs?
Nintendo's plan to buy the moon continues.

Reading between the lines...

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Console

Mario Cart: Pit Stop

Smash Bros Minor Disagreement

...and a bevy of sorely disappointing trading card based games.

They still don't get it.

Yeah… it's a shame.
I'm expecting:

Flappy Toad
Angry Birds: Mushrooms
Fruit Plumber
Candy Crush Bowser
Marios Vs Luigis
The Legend of Zelda: Buy Credits To Remove Ads

If they don't move to other platforms they will be gone within five years, or less.

Current day Nintendo is a joke, overpriced slow hardware, handhelds with jagged graphics, consoles that don't come with controllers, all this mii crap and only a few quality games...

If I buy a PS4 I know I will get to play in excess of twenty or more quality games over it's lifespan, however with a WiiU the only reason I would buy it is for the less than five decent games it holds, at best! Nintendo used to be a legend with their hardware and games, such as the N64 with Goldeneye, they were the industry leaders, now look at them.

It's time Nintendo concentrated on what they do best, a handful of legendary game franchises! Bring them to the platforms people ARE using and leave the hardware side of it behind... If they do this I honestly think they will make more money on just the software than they do now with software and hardware combined...

I would pay in excess of £25 for a decent Mario game on iPad and the average £55 for a decent Mario 3DWorld type game on PS and XB... so would the BILLIONS of people using those platforms!

Hopefully within the next few years Nintendo consoles will be were they belong, in the past.

Despite everything you said they're successful. Amiibo, 3DS, Pokemon have all been roaring successes of the past few years. Before that they created 2 of the top 3 best selling consoles of all time (Wii and DS), the 3DS is on track too.

Their only flop is the Wii U. But to call it a flop is disingenuous. It's profitable but isn't a wild success like the DS, 3DS or Wii were. Nintendo are in profit, unlike Sony, so I wonder why people think they're going away when all they've expressed an interest in is broadening their market.

I have complete faith in Nintendo creating some new quality games for touch devices. They have always been so nerdy about developing games around the controller and this is just another type of controller for them. Their games will always have quality and polish.

I knew they would surrender (to common sense) sooner or later. But I can't believe it took THIS long.

As much as I respect them for their historic achievements, the present day Nintendo has become the Blackberry of gaming world, imo. Stubborn morons.

One thing to hope though is that they don't cave into the worst parts of the sector e.g. touch only controls (where unnecessary), 'exploitative' IAP, etc.

I think it was that Zelda touched a lot of lives and so it left lasting bit of nostalgia. The game itself was fun. And fantasy RPG's have always been popular, even today the "swords and the sorcerers" genre is still very popular.

There was also a huge marketing campaign associated with Zelda in the 80's. Lets not forget about The Legend Of Zelda TV show that was put in with the Super Mario Super Show

Can't forget about the cereal that went with it

And don't forget, before the Internet, we had Nintendo Power to tell us what was worth playing.

I had a small booklet that was included in a Nintendo Power edition that had a whole bunch of squares in it and YOU had to draw in the entire map of Zelda. I had the whole thing mapped out.

Ooh! Bring Pokemon Yellow version so that I can relive my childhood days as a wee lad!

I'll pay $20 for that!

Am I the only one that really likes the Wii U? They got rid of those annoying motion controls. I HATED the Wii because of that. The Wii U is a million times better. I do not care one bit about graphics. Their games are very nice though.

Mario Kart is really fun. As I said I hated the Wii and I skipped several handheld. I think the last Mario Kart I played was 10 years ago or so (the original DS). So some might feel a bit of a "Madden NFL" situation going on and are getting tired of Nintendo releases. Taking about a 10 year break, these games are very incredible.

I have also been re-playing Ocarina of Time 3D on the 3DS. I keep the 3D mode off. That has been the longest time I have played a game in so long (not counting sandbox that has no story really like Minecraft and Terraria).

I just downloaded Majora's Mask since I am about to beat Ocarina of Time and I have never played Majora's Mask.

You and I ;) I also have a PS4 and it basically collected dust for a year. The only game console I play with are the Wii U and 3DS'es. I just bought the new 3DS and am replaying all the Zelda and Mario games I have on it. On the old 3DS XL, I played in 3D 50% of the time. The new one I leave 3D on 100%. It's great! I actually just dugged out my Gameboy Advance SP and will be playing with Metroid again when I have the time :D I also bought Majora's Mask. Not sure I can get into that one.. I like to explore every nook and cranny in a game and don't like being rushed.

I would've been down voted into oblivion if that button was still there, but I am not at all excited by this announcement; in fact I dread it. If Nintendo starts porting their classics over to mobile, it will be the beginning of the end for them, like Sega. Sure Sega is still around, but it's been nothing but junk. I bought most of the classics I used to love on iOS, like Mega Man and Secret of Mana (similar to Zelda link to the past, my all time favorite game). None of which I played for more than 5 minutes, even on titles that work with the iCade that I have. Despite the vastly superior hardware, playing games on iPhone or iPad just feel completely disconnected.

I watched the conference stream and if i recall they said something about not liking the freemium model as they feel it would cheapen their brand.

Nintendo has been in a bit of financial dires over the last couple years.

I wouldn't put it past them to change their song and dance if there's finally profit to be had.

Companies ARE allowed changing their opinions you know :p

But yeah, I really hope not, I hope it's full titles

Nintendo is like Apple with crap hardware plus all the shortcomings of proprietary everything. Despite the similarity in business models, it's actually the exact opposite of Apple.

Only awesome hardware and decent games can save Nintendo.

Even though they are stating new content for mobile devices, releasing the back catalogue would net them millions.

If they only sold the Mario games for $0.99 each - people (including myself) will buy.

I'm sure they have thought of that.
