In addition to all the other games I forgot one of the best. Snowboarding Kids, was a great and beautiful game. Would love that on phone

Let me correct that: Nintendo was foolish not to create game titles for the iPhone, and the iPad.
Touché, but I think there is still hope for them if they can port some games over to iOS. Heck I had NES emulators running on my first gen iPhone so we know it's possible.

I doubt it. The controller shells aren't proving to be hot sellers since many people are not looking at the iPhone and iPad as gaming machines. Any tablet or smartphone is viewed that way now. Productivity and social are the two biggest categories on a phone or tablet. If they play anything, it's Tetris, Angry Bird or Fruit Ninja, simple games that can utilize the touch screen properly. Plus, viewing movies, TV shows and listening to music are rated higher than video games on these devices. Hence why, they don't see this as an acceptable model to make games on. Eventually, they may do old NES and GB games, but beyond that, I very much doubt their games will grace our devices.

there are a lot of successful games that do not fall into the categories you mentioned, like infinity blade and real racing. iOS has some very good games that could benefit from a traditional controls set (not touch based). i think that if nintendo move their games to iOS along with a really really good controller that is light, ergonomic and can cover the basics (D pad + analog stick + xwyz buttons) they'd make a ton of money. heck, they can even make their games to only work with their controller, and people would still go for it, because they do have some awesome titles.

that said, it would be the end of nintendo as a console maker, and would probably stick them in the app store forever, as long as they fall behind MS and sony. i think that nintendo has a pretty good player base to work with, so when they do decide to join the current console wars, they won't start that far away; there are a lot of people - adults and kids - that like their games or have a sense of nostalgia from when they played NES. if they are willing to leave their comfort zone (meaning the usual smash bros/mario and the like) and make a console that can run next-gen games too, they could really stick it to sony and MS. i mean, these days if your console doesn't have the latest GTA (and some other games' titles that automatically jumps to mind when you say "xbox" or "playstation") you are pretty much non-existent to most players.

I've been playing Nintendo games on my iOS devices for years. Nintendo is foolish not to give people like me an outlet to purchase their games. Just pure stubbornness and pride-fullness on their part.

Hell, I own a 3DS and I'm still more likely to play Nintendo games on an iOS device than an actual Nintendo system. Carrying around a handheld solely for gaming is becoming a thing of the past.

Iwata's comments have been misrepresented and were totally blown out of proportion by the most of the mainstream media.

If you've been following his history regarding "smart devices", Iwata has in the past stated that Nintendo was looking into smartphones and tablets as an addition to their first party hardware experiences to entice new users to Nintendo consoles and handhelds.

What Iwata has suggested would be mini games made for touch devices using Nintendo characters but that major games would still be exclusive to Nintendo consoles. For example, we might see a Mario Angry Birds style game to introduce a new generation to Super Mario who would then feel compelled to buy a Nintendo console to play the main games. I believe he also made mention of a Zelda puzzle game and a Pokémon "pet" app.

If there's one thing people are desperate for: it's Nintendo games on their mobile phones.
Obviously smart phones aren't the best fit for direct ports of their titles, but as their announcement said they were looking into mini games (again, people are so desperate for Nintendo games they're willing to write poor articles instead of reporting the facts).

The 3DS is doing great too. All they really need to do is turn the Wii U around, sales of the PS4 and Xbox One have also slowed way down. The problem is home consoles fighting for a place, whilst Nintendo handhelds and smart phones are doing great.

It is? Maybe you don't want to take one with you, I come across loads of people with DS/3DSes (only ever seen one Vita in the wild, which is a shame as it's an incredible device). I only have to walk to the shops and I get my 10 Streetpass slots filled ;).

Nintendo is NOT moving to smartphones. They earn their money through hardware sales and their first party games. How much profit do you think they will make from $3 dollar games on the App Store. There was a suggestion that Nintendo would have to sell over 750 million games on the App Store to earn the same profit as they currently do.

I beg to differ. Retro gaming is hot these days, so releasing their back catalogue of retro games priced at, say, $9,99, would earn them a lot of money. Of course, they should not just rely on iOS sales but it would definitely be a big chunk of revenue.

They could start with releasing old 1st and 3rd party NES games, then slowly work their way up to SNES, GameBoy, and eventually N64 and GameCube. Nintendo loves making remasters of old games and iOS is the perfect platform for them to play in.

Ocarina of Time on iPad mini? HELL YES.

The other part of revenue should come from a new console. Move away from the PowerPC architecture and adopt x86 like the rest, which will make it easier for developers to cross-platform their games. Make it powerful to be able to compete with the big 2 and finally, ditch the Wii brand. It sucks. This should be second coming of the Nintendo 64. Back in the day there were rumors of an Ultra Nintendo. Make it so, Ninty. Make it so.

And yet the 3DS is performing great in a market of smartphones and more powerful handhelds.

Whenever this happens, I hope Nontendo eases up on the app pricing. My 7-yr old son was begging for a 3DS for Christmas, so Santa obliged. Now it sits collecting dust because he can't afford the "good" games and dear old dad isn't forking over >$15 for even a used game.

WE bought Game Boy Advances, ONLY because we were moving cross-country and faced with multiple trips in the car. The kids still really only have those initial games - and it's been 10 years!

Meanwhile, my middle daughter has asked for a DS every year for years... the thought of buying games on a cartridge and then tracking them, um, no thanks.

Oh, they have recently gotten into Pokemon... so I think they bought something used for the GBAs on that. *I* didn't buy it!

Meanwhile, they have iPod Touches, cheaper games and not extra pieces to keep track of. Win win.

Drop the hardware and focus on software. The hardware is ages behind, nobody wants it anymore. Both the 3DS and WIIU have failed.

I don't care about any newer games Nintendo is making, I just want classics on my iPhone.

Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario 2, Rally Bike, Castlevania I and II, Zelda, etc (ad nauseum) my god it would never end. The controls are all simple enough to work well without the need for an external game pad.

Unfortunately for them, they're too late for a big piece of the pie. Not sure who their target market would be....

No, they aren't. I know plenty of people (myself included) that would pay to get Pokemon, Mario, Legend of Zelda, etc. on our iOS devices. I'd even consider buying a MFi controller if Nintendo started offering games that I could airplay to my Apple TV. Maybe I could finally even retire my Super Nintendo and N64.

We got 5 used game cartridges for $20 from some friends, but our son found some new titles on the "e-store" that I agreed to purchase. The most expensive was $6 and he doesn't even play it anymore. He plays on his iPod Touch 5 more than anything else, mostly because he can do so much more with it. Now he sees some of his friends with an iPad mini and wants one too. THAT is where Nintendo is failing in the mobile console market.

Nintendo needs to drop its hardware, if they don't its is "game over". To be compelled to buy Nintendo hardware? Dream on, everybody knows it and it sucks.

The fact that you didn't mention Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 negates the entirety of your opinion. Those two games were so good nothing on any other console can compare. There is a reason almost every reviewer gave Super Mario Galaxy a 100%. It is a freaking masterpiece.

Like I said, I tried all the launch games. Super Mario Galaxy wasn't a launch game. I'd already sold my Wii when it came out.

Besides I don't like platform games. The whole fact that the only good games are the Mario ones proves my point.

Sadly, I'll buy a Wii U just for the new Smash Bros, but I'd take NES, SNES and N64 classics on the iPad or iPhone any day.

Pokémon and Zelda on a Retina Display? Hell yes!

First it doesn't mean they are moving to smartphone

Second even if that means they are moving to smartphones. Doesn't mean it's going to be iphone.

Third. They could very well be making their own devices. Sounds to me they just think having software subsidize hardware is no longer profitable. And I don't think they would consider giving up control over hardware. Moving forward they might be considering the kindle approach.

Mine share a Mini (without games on it - truly all edu at this point), and then have their iPod Touch 4th gens they carry everywhere. The oldest has an iP4 she uses instead of the touch these days.

Now that I reflect on it, since we got the mini before CHristmas... this might have actually been the first year *I* didn't hear "want a DS" since they never made me a list. I did hear about it when we were shopping for Disney Infinity stuff (XBox, got a stellar deal on it on Black Friday - but I will buy a Wii U at some point because we have a ton of stuff to use on it, and darn it, I want Mario).

But I know mine would buy various games for their Touches happily.

Time will tell what happens....
