You beat me to it. Also not too many people know that Mario started before the NES...

I played that. It was great for it's time. You had to run to the platform beneath the bugs and turtles and then bonk them from below.

But all the games listed in this thread are very old examples of Nintendo developing for other platforms. I don't remember the last time they had a Zelda game or a Mario game for another console or computer. They have learned their lesson.

They are so dominant now in handheld and consoles that it's difficult to see them reaching the same stage Sega did, i.e. giving up the hardware and producing only software. They have the 3D console coming up, we will have to see how different that experience is for gaming and whether it will entice a few people who would otherwise only play Tetris.

By the way, it's not only "hardcore" gamers who buy DSes as some people in this thread seem to think. The price is low enough and Nintendo widely enough known that it finds it's way into a lot of casual gamers hands.

Yeah... Coleco was good for porting "bad" versions of Nintendo games to Atari. Donkey Kong, for instance...

Ahh i beg to differ but it has

Yes but those specs are only used for DSi-only games, which (so far) are download titles. Games the DS Lite couldn't run since it doesn't have the foundation to do so. Though you are hella right.

All store-bought games run on all the DS' though, at least. Those £20 games that people are too lazy to go out and buy or have delivered :D.

Whoopdie Doo.

Hey Nintendo: Sony has already kicked your arse from here to Christmas. You're already dead.

Apple is just putting the final nails on your pathetic coffin.

And no, I don't want another dopey pikachu game. Die already!

How are they light years ahead? Last I checked I can only play games on my nintendo ds, using either a stupid PEN or a d-pad. Nintendo's DS Flips screen is more than 25yrs old. (considering one of ther first consoles (http://www.engadget.com/media/2006/02/gamewatch2.jpg) was made in 1980 and looks exactly the same as the Nintendo DS...

Can you even mention me a NDS game that plays like an MMO? Kind of like Pocket Legends? http://www.spacetimestudios.com/content.php?11 (which plays awesome over 3g or wifi).

Nintendo has been sitting on their laurels, until now. Fighting an old EGO war with Sony... The reason why they jumped is because in wasting time with Sony, Apple has become their new neighbor. If Apple had already a "Console" they would be ******** in their pants right now.

Go sit down with a group of kids and ask them which they would rather play games with--a Nintendo DS or an iPhone. I guarantee you they will overwhelmingly choose the DS. The stylus part doesn't matter. Nintendo being lazy doesn't matter. That's irrelevant to the user. That's like someone trying to tell you the iPhone sucks because it doesn't multitask or because Steve Jobs is a control freak. It's irrelevant.

Like the iPhone and the iPad, the DS has mindshare in the gaming world like you wouldn't believe--s**t-tons of it that the iPhone has barely begun to put a dent in. You can challenge the DS in any way you want, but the iPhone isn't going to upstage it, not any time soon at least. It's THE place for handheld games and there's a lot more to it than whether it has a stylus or not.

Hell, the fact that the iPhone won't play Mario or Zelda or Harvest Moon games rules it out with both of my kids. I know lots of others for whom that would be true also. I have an iPhone and my kids have Nintendo DS. They have played games on both. They view the iPhone games as an interesting distraction, but the DS is something else entirely.

Apple can carve out a nice chunk of the mobile gaming market. They're already doing it, but a challenge to Nintendo and the DS they are not. Don't kid yourself.

I cannot figure out which mind altering substance you use but lets discuss some facts.

Nintendo a single purpose company generates more profits than all of Sony's many divisons combined.

The PSP is an utter failure of a device that cannot sell software to save its life.

Apple as a company has tried many times to break into the game industry. Last time they seriously tried Microsoft swooped in and bought the software right out from under Apple.

Apple as a Game company poses no threat to anyone. Apple is simply a possible future threat because they are an alternative location for developers to develop. That is all.

Also, if I were Nintendo, I would be concerned that the expanded market won't buy their next generation console. They have alienated alot of gamers with their online policies, DRM policies, third-party policies, and lack of content in general so if the older gamers don't go out and buy the Wii 2 in droves like they did the Wii then they could be in for some hard times.

Oh, sorry, I thought you were talking about Apple there for a moment...

Oh my... it's discussions like these that give Apple users (Note: I didn't say "Mac users", 'cause half these kids only have an iPhone) a bad reputation.

Nintendo is huge, they innovate, they are the king of the video game industry. Nobody even comes close to touching the number of AAA franchises they have, profits they pull in and hardware units they sell.
They're an incredibly successful company that puts out quality products and treats its consumers well. They're not perfect, sure, but neither is Apple or any other company.

I even saw one person in this thread suggesting Apple may buy Nintendo... what a joke! Apple could not afford Nintendo even if they for some bizarre reason wished to purchase them.

The way people are talking about Nintendo here reminds me of the way PC users talk about Macs. They will bring up the Performas they used in grade school as if that's the current state of things. Nintendo is not making the SNES or Gameboys anymore, people.

What alternate reality are you from?

Ah, just another ill-informed gamer who probably stopped playing 5-10 years ago.

Seriously funny post.

Did I invoke the rage of the Oldschool Gamers? :D My bad.

I guess Nintendo has nothing to worry about..............................

Fixed.

Well, the DS used to only cost $130... And they keep coming out with more DS's without any changes except for size of screens... if they changed the device and had different games, updated marios for example, then I'd get a new DS. However, they choose to make a DSi XL a month (it seems that short) after they make a DSi and try to sell it at over $50 the price of a DS Lite and it does ethe exact same things. I can buy an iPod Touch for $200 that offers full html internet with multitouch and loads of other apps that make it a pocket computer. I would rather have an ipod than a ds, but it turns out I ahve both, and the one I use most often: iPod Touch. I haven't touched my DS in a year or so because teh games are old and the new ones are BORING. I want a new mario kart or a new Mario RPG that is worht something... come on nintendo.

The DSi has twice the processing power and 4 times the ram of the Launch DS. It offers built in Music Player,2 Cameras and an App store, and web browser. That is a pretty significant upgrade over the launch model DS.

The DSi XL as they have said is pretty much a side model particularly targeted to people with vision problems, elderly or someone who just wants it bigger. No one is forcing you to buy the XL or the i if all you want is regular model. To attack nintendo for offering options is rather absurd considering Apple is doing the same thing with every product it makes.
S*** just got real.

Who is up for an Apple home console versus the next generation of Nintendo console?

The Apple Pippin

I know what Nintendo's going to do to combat Apple, make another Mario Game! That'll show 'em. Seriously though, I'm all for competition. These two companies will push each other to new heights. I've been a big fan of Nintendo since the 80's and Apple since the 90's. This is truly exciting news. Nintendo needs a fire lit under their asses, just as Apple needs some quality control for its gaming apps.

Let's please pray that something like the NGage never comes back.

Bad ideas have a way of being repackaged and resold. I'm sticking to my guns here, the NGage was a good idea and a very, very poor execution. The screen was too small and distribution for games was very poor.

Fix those two things along with a Nintendo centric social networking web site, you have something. If you think Apple and Google has money to burn, Nintendo also has big time coffers for something like this!

I think I have to agree with this point.

I really don't see the two as competitors honestly.

The thing is all about looking into the future and predicting the effect one company may have on another. Automobiles and buggy whips were never competitors, but the former put the latter out of business.

Those games were in the arcade way before their release on the home consoles. This was all prior to the release of the NES of course. You ever play those games in the Atari or Colecovision? Yikes!!! Those programmers were geniuses to fit the games on 64K ROM :-D.

The good 'ol days of home console games. 1/10 the amount of colors and 3/4 the amount of stages and elements of its arcade equivalent :p

Just think... the animated banner at the top of this web page takes up more memory than either of those two entire games.

Ding ding ding, some one give this man (woman?) a prize.

Its exactly why Apples attempt at the Pippin failed. They didnt have any support outside of Bandai.

The reality is as a Game Developer myself that we are a limited resource. We can only work on so many projects at a time as an industry. Sure we can cross platform develop but thats not generally very favorable to some companies. Nintendo is pretty open to sharing the goods as far as 3rd party stuff goes. Apple on the other hand is less happy with the idea.

Thats why Apples hardware is a potential threat in the future. Stuff made for Apple hardware may not be able to be shared around to the others and that means a limited resource (skilled developers) are not available

I was going to make a big rant but I'm too tired. That being said, Apple isn't going to roll over like Sony did. If Nintendo thinks they can take on Apple, they're going to have a MASSIVE fight on their hands.

Most parents will not be willing to buy an iDevice for Junior, knowing that it will end up at the bottom of a toy box, but a DSi or whatever, sure.... toss it in a box with the toys... it can take a beating.

Really? I've seen enough 5 year olds with iPod touches. I didn't get my first one until 39. At 5 the most technologically advanced gizmo was my sister's hand me down Close N' Play record player. Oh, and I got a Merlin when I was 11 or so.
