Nintendo essentially lost one segment of their business by releasing the Switch. They now have a unified home/portable platform. 3DS is on its way out. They’ve got to make up for that loss somehow. Nintendos new president said he intends on making mobile their next big business segment.

Their mobile efforts are entirely about making money. Because thats what a publicly traded company is demanded to do. They tried, and publicly stated their preference to a one-time purchase over micro-transactions, however it didn’t work. Micro-transactions won. Their console business is where I would expect them to continue being Nintendo.
If they stop being Nintendo, nobody will care about their mobile games anymore. There'd be no front-page MR news for Dr Mario. Unless they do the freemium thing better than Clash of Clans does, which I doubt.

Why Nintendo isn't working on a good iOS control system so it can just play old NES and SNES games is beyond me. If that control system worked well and those old games were £1-2 each then I'd buy a metric shedload of them

The masses have spoken. Freemium is the mode of preference. Whatever emotions people associate with Nintendo, at the end of the day they need to remember that Nintendo is, first and foremost, a for profit business. Freemium is where they got acceptable ROI. One time buy was a revenue disappointment. As long as freemium is the more profitable avenue to take in mobile, we'll get freemium games from Nintendo... and almost every other successful games house.
The masses are well...us. Actually sort of - active posters here are not representative of the majority. I certainly dislike freemium and I bought the full Mario Run.

This doesn’t bode well for the console future in general. If people really prefer freemium, this will end up being the new console model too. While I think there will still be titles you can just buy, it could become less of an option.

Look ahead. Building and maintaining the brand is what creates true, game-changing success. Just ask Apple.

When Nintendo once bet on Shigeru Miyamoto and Super Mario, they were looking far ahead. They need to get back to that, or one day Nintendo will be just one more among all the ordinary games companies that do nothing but grab what they can at the moment.

I disagree. Mobile and console gaming are different animals. Mobile gaming, for the most part, consists of quick hit 5-10 min interactions - often spur of the moment. Console gaming is typically a time commitment engaged with intent. Mobile primarily has the freemium model. Console gaming bleeds the people primarily through dlc... lots and lots of dlc. There are always going to be exceptions like Fortnite and such, but most of the money in console gaming comes from that large upfront financial outlay... then the dlc... followed by more dlc... and more dlc... then remastered editions... and more dlc

A freemium game from 1990 based on pills in the midst of an opioid epidemic and mass prescription drug abuse. Who were the marketing geniuses that green lighted this one? Nintendo is going to get trashed all over the media and social media for this cash grab. Look how many oxys I just scored.

Highly doubt it. Never once crossed my mind and after you mentioning it, it still doesn't even make them anything closely related. Even the media isn't stupid enough to go that route, especially when most of them probably grew up playing Dr. Mario on NES

Nah, I disagree completely. As long as Nintendo has their IP and their consoles, they will have their fans. Fervent, sometimes crazy fans. Those fans and others have shown with their wallet what they prefer. So Nintendo is nowhere near diminished in their eyes. They're still spending on Nintendo, and probably will continue to spend on Nintendo... cuz they love Nintendo. The one's like us (me included) who want a pay once model? The one's who refuse to play the freemium game? Yeah, our opinions really don't matter because we're not spending like the freemium crowd.

Does dr. Mario have a license to prescribe medications? Or is he gonna overdose people like that one doctor who did michael jackson good?

"Like the original game, Dr. Mario World is a match three"

Wrong. The original was match four. And it was awesome, especially against a friend. This? I'll try it, but it will be hard to beat the original.

In fairness to freemium, Command and Conquer and Sim City have been done really well. I have sunk hours in to those games and not spent a single thing.

It will be interesting when Nintendo bring Mario Kart to iOS, hopefully it will support Xbox One/Dualshock 4 controllers.

Nintendo. Listen up.

Want to make money?

Release a range of bluetooth NES / SNES / N64 controllers with matching emulator software for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Add instant save functionality. Bundle the emulator with 2 or 3 top-of-the line games (e.g. SNES emulator with Super Mario World) and charge 2 or 3 EUR/USD per additional game as in app downloads. Maybe even release some new games in the old style (e.g. a Metroidvania game for SNES) at a higher price.

Watch the money roll in.

whereas games like clash of clans are bringing in $800,000+ per DAY, due to micro transactions.
Can you really blame them??
I understand why game are designed this way, but I am not sure it is a good thing in the long-term.

I sometimes wonder if micro transactions will end up being the next E.T. of this generation.

I personally hate games based on "pay-to-win", but I think that the industry shifting away from the traditional model and toward the lucrative micro transaction model may only be a short-term gain, and could kill the industry in the long run.

The replay value of these freemium games are horrible, it basically makes them disposable. Mix that the fact that iOS games could disappear from the app store at a moments notice, makes them not viable for the long-term.

Ha! The US makes up only 5% of the world's population and consumes approximately 80% of the world's prescription opioid drugs. Which means for most people there is no opioid problem.

No he will be like the other 99% of doctors who don't.

Also guess what? Water isn't wet enough so let's go after it and turn it into some political nonsense that has nothing to actually do with it.

Where is my Mario Kart?
Coming summer 2019 as stated in the closed beta.

We want Mario Kart!
The game play was good except the damn freemium model comes into the picture!
There are tracks that are essentially impossible to win all 5 grand stars, if you don’t have the right characters even if you are extremely lucky in the items. Because if you don’t get frenzy mode, it is impossible.
