Nintendo's First iOS Game 'Miitomo' Now Available in the United States

So all of the most annoying aspect of Facebook in one place. Now maybe Facebook will be useable without everyone wanting to know what their Friend's favorite cheese is.

Be wary when it asks,

"What was the first car you owned?"
"What if your favorite pet's name?"
"What is the name of the street you grew up on?"
"What is your mother's maiden name?"

People set their expectations too high. Nintendo, like Apple, wants to control the experience when you play games. I highly highly HIGHLY doubt Nintendo will officially release their big hits outside of their hardware.

Expecting this is like expecting Apple to license OS X to Dell or iOS to Samsung.

Nintendo has stated that they won't release any old or console exclusive games on mobile, all their mobile games will be original.
Nintendo's whole business model is vertical integration, releasing their big games on 3rd party platforms would completely undermine that.

I remember another certain company, which also uses vertical integration, whose experimentation with licensing of their software for use on 3rd party platforms almost ended in disaster...
Keep that in mind before you go on about what a fortune Nintendo would make by doing so.
Also, look at what happened to Sega after they gave up on their own hardware...

They are dying, the sad thing is they're not realizing just how much money they're sitting on if they only licensed their titles for other platforms - not just mobile but other consoles too.

I guess it's a Japanese thing, like the ritual suicide only for business.

I'm liking this so far.

And to those expecting your beloved Mario to appear on the App Store, that won't happen.

The same way that saved Apple in the nineties?

Oh no, wait, that's not what saved them. That almost killed them! Instead they decided to stick with their philosophy of vertical integration and now they have the most popular phones, tablets and PCs in the world BECAUSE of that.

I can only guess that Nintendo is going after a particular group with this game. I don't know what group that is (I guess young kids), but I am sure I am not in the target audience. As others have said, bringing Nintendo classic characters and games would be a better hit than a new title without a fan base IMHO.

If you want to compare Nintendo to another company, then at least compare it to a similar one: Sega.

Despite having released their last console in '99, and today they are restructured into a 3rd party developer, but at least they still exist. And that's without a catalog like Nintendo

Yeah we get it. We want Mario, Zelda, blah blah blah... BTW Nintendo, your investors will be expecting a much bigger iOS splash in the near future.

This is dumb. Bring on Mario or Zelda. Do not download this people. Lets let Nintindo know that we want some of there beloved classics on iOS.

Sega is a perfect example of why going 3rd party can be a terrible idea, they're a mere shell of their former self. On the other hand, Apple is a perfect example of why sticking with vertical integration can be essential in bringing a company around from the brink of bankruptcy to become the most valuable in the world.
Btw, Nintendo isn't dying, we've heard that since the early nineties and it's still nonsense. They have billions in the bank and have returned to profitability.

Does Nintendo still make New & original AAA titles? Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, F-Zero, PilotWings, StarFox?
We had a Wii-U then sold it because 99.99% of it's use was just playing Wii or other "classic" Games.
It feels like Nintendo has been lacking in developing and capitalizing on their own intellectual properties that people would actually care about. Hopefully this MiiTomo is just Nintendo dipping their toe in the waters a little, and then they will plan some actual games to be released.

I downloaded it this morning just to see what it was. I'm pretty shocked that this is what Nintendo came up with. It is the opposite of fun.

Agreed, I have no friends that are using it and really only know 2-3 other people with a 3DS. All I've done is answer a few random questions and it's boring as hell already.
