So they should both lower the price of the games and get out of the hardware market. Good thing you don't run Nintendo.

Good thing I didn't say anything about running a company that's already running itself into the ground, I just want the games.

Why would Nintendo sell Pokemon and Mario Kart for $10 each when they can get $40 and $60 on their own hardware and not have to give a cut to Apple in the process?

I'm talking old Mario kart like from the SNES. They aren't selling those for $40 or $60. Not to mention the MILLIONS of devices they would suddenly be able to sell to. I was just throwing an example out there, ffs

Nintendo, this BS. No one wants this ****!!!! Just port over the original Mario and Mario cart already

Yeah, no one wants this ****, that's why it's currently the #1 free app at the App Store

Isn't it ironic how people that hang around a site devoted to a company who's biggest strength is that they make their own hardware and software is bashing another company and calling it stupid for NOT abandoning that same strategy?

The hypocrisy from Apple fanboys never seizes to amaze me

Nintendo isn't even marketing this as a game. Rather, a Nintendo social network. Idk what all the hate is about. Pokemon shuffle has also been out for something like a year and is rather enjoyable. Some people just have to complain.

Hell, I would take ExciteBike original or N64 version on the iPad and iPhone too....

Uh… wow, a number of reflexive complainers on this thread. A few pertinent recollections:

• Neither Nintendo nor Apple refers to this app as a game. MacRumours columnist Juli Clover does that, so let's address those comments to Juli if we must.

• Iwata held a press conference over a year ago explaining that their intention in releasing on smartphones was to invite people into their own ecosystem. This was a premeditated strategy, not an act of desperation.

• Nintendo's corporate leaders have always expressed adherence to maxim that if you make your own software, you should make your own hardware. (Imagine being a fan of a company who thought that! Certainly no one on this forum would.)

Into the ground is the new way of saying they're turning it around and had a profitable 2015, right?

This is what most people in this thread don't get. Nintendo is kind of like Apple in the sense that they want to control the user experience with their games. You're all crying to get Mario kart, Zelda, Mario etc, on iOS with touchscreen controls. Why would you want to ruin those franchises with such a dumb control scheme? Or better yet use an MFi controller, right? If you're going to go to all the effort, why not just bloody buy a Nintendo console that can play them? Not everything has to played via an  device...
People have been saying Nintendo is doomed and that they're dying, for years and years, but they're still here. Sitting pretty on about 10.5bil of cash. So those wishing for a "Sega" from Nintendo will be waiting a while.

So I'm guessing people just don't understand miitomo and are now having a cry it wasn't a Mario game. Nintendo will adapt their mobile apps to fit mobile devices and the experience you get on them. You definitely won't see their main games being ported to any touchscreen-only device. Give me buttons and a D-pad over touchscreen any day!

We can all agree that the hardware+software philosophy is something than can lead to great results.

The problem is that Apple's hardware is usually pretty good and on the other hand Nintendo's is below par.

If Apple dropped the ball for a long enough period of time they would also be in serious trouble (like it happened in the past)

Nintendo specifically denied those rumors as IGN and all other gaming outlets have all reported. You should link to those articles.

This app was made to specifically replace Club Nintendo that shut down last year and link your nintendo accounts together in one unified place. It is their way of rewarding their customers and to have a central location for accounts.

I was expecting a game, what is this? I like it, (I have my Wii U with my character already created) but I don't think this will go anywhere. Maybe Japan this is huge.

This is the new "Club Nintendo" Its how you get points and rewards and it links your nintendo accounts so your software will be tied to you and not the console.

Remember that they do have games based on stylus touch from DS that could be adapted for finger touch. I'm thinking of things like the various Mario vs Donkey Kong games with the minis. Loss of the second screen wouldn't be too big a deal as it was just a zoomed out map of the area.

Very true, but I'm assuming most that are clamoring for "real" nintendo games, haven't owned Nintendo's latest portables. They are looking for nostalgia. Otherwise they would already have a DS/3DS

this is your first game on iOS, Nintendo? seriously WTF this is why they're failing so bad

It's actually really smart of them to do this. They have always developed software on their own hardware so it's understandable for them to release this simple app to test the system, track how users us it, all sorts of stuff. This is a litmus test for them so that they can test their menu UI frameworks and 3D pipelines on the iOS devices. They're not stupid, they are just being risk averse on their first release and I think that's fair. Give them time and I'm sure we'll see great things :) They have a mother load of IP to tap into, so they want to make sure they get things right.

I'm a huge Nintendo fan but this app is crap. Not upset about it though. Nintendo makes great console games and I want them to continue to do so. I don't want watered down versions of Mario or any other Nintendo exclusive on a mobile platform.

The thing that always bothered me about the "Nintendo is running their business into the ground" comments is that Microsoft had to sell Xbox-branded hardware for a decade before they turned a profit and Sony managed to piss away pretty much all the profit they made from their industry-dominating Playstation 2 sales on the Playstation 3, but Nintendo has one bad year and "****, they're ****ed."

Bring me that Mario platformer or Zelda adventure, I really hope that Nintendo takes that Sega-route and shifts their focus to software.

Nintendo is still making money. Especially in the handheld market. Sega was pretty dead when it decided to make software only.

Nintendo isn't dead despite what some people think.

Unless I'm mistaken, Miitomo is more or less an app intended on getting customers into Nintendo's ecosystem and signed up for their services so they can be marketed to and ideally moved into more Nintendo software and maybe even hardware, whereas the next apps will be more game-like.

For instance, I imagine all of Nintendo's apps will feature mii functionality in some form, and signing up for this app gets you to create one so it can be tied to your MyNintendo account.

Iwata said as much when their mobile strategy was announced a few years back.

When has Nintendo hardware been sub par? Nintendo has always made quality hardware and low failure rates. Maybe the graphics are not as good as a ps4 or xbox one, but their hardware is far from being below par.

I feel like folks are confusing "Quality" and "Power" (or some other word in place of power.)

Nintendo had a very clear strategy with the Wii and 3DS, which is why they went with lower powered hardware.

Heck, the entire design philosophy for the Game Boy was "Lateral Thinking With Withered Technology"

Yokoi articulated his philosophy of "Lateral Thinking of Withered Technology" (枯れた技術の水平思考?, "Kareta Gijutsu no Suihei Shikō") (also translated as "Lateral Thinking with Seasoned Technology") in the book, Yokoi Gunpei Game House (横井軍平ゲーム館 Yokoi Gunpei Gēmu-kan?), which consists of a collection of interviews. "Withered technology" in this context refers to a mature technology which is cheap and well understood. "Lateral thinking" refers to finding radical new ways of using such technology. Yokoi held that toys and games do not necessarily require cutting edge technology; novel and fun gameplay are more important. In the interview he suggested that expensive cutting edge technology can get in the way of developing a new product.

Nintendo is getting desperate. The Wii was awesome, the Wii U was the complete opposite and will cease production soon.

I'm done buying Nintendo products unless they are handhelds, and even then...

This is not a game. It's a full-blown ad to push people to their services. If they were so good (financially and quality-wise), they wouldn't need to use the mobile platform generating the most amount of a revenue/year to promote their products. You don't see Sony and Microsoft needing to do this.

Put Mario Kart on iOS complete with excellent visuals, gameplay and MFi support, and then people will be impressed.

The Wii was awesome?? Mines the only Nintendo system I have (I've got them all and always will) that pretty much just gathers dust. I actually like the Wii U more, it's got a great selection of games and I like the controller having a screen. I can use it while the wife's watching whatever crap she watches on the telly :D

There's no way Ninty is putting proper, full blown, first party games on anything but there own systems for the foreseeable future. We might get watered down "experiences" but I think that'll be about it.

What Nintendo needs is a modern day SNES, if only. Not that it matters, as long as they continue to make Mario, Zelda, Metroid and the rest, I'll buy their systems. I'm a big old Ninty fan, always have been. Bring on the NX.

People don't want these silly kids games anymore Nintendo...

I do, I'm 42 and I still love Maro, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Starfox, F-Zero and, well, most of the rest of Nintys first party ip.
[doublepost=1459528400][/doublepost]
If you're not interested, that's fine. Claiming not a single person would want to play any NES/SNES titles on their phone, however, is way too broad an assumption.

True, I already do, I don't use the touch screen though, MFI controller all the way.

Damn Nintendo, that aesthetic was never ever ever been anything but terrible; not ten years ago and certainly not today...

In all seriousness, who is it at Nintendo that both hates eyeballs and has the clout to push that art design through production?..

Really addictive app. It's like a trimmed down Tomodatchi Life, even down to the clothes, the room, the voice and personality stuff... it's a nice version of it.

Oddly enough this is the most hooked I've been on an app on my iPhone. Angry Birds got my attention years ago for an hour, but so far I've spent maybe 2 or 3 on this. Can't wait to see how the app evolves, and hopefully they add more rewards for Wii U/3DS games.

It's what I really hate about this forum; people like that.

If Nintendo games are that important to those folk, buy Nintendos hardware. I don't sit here getting upset that XYZ app isn't on OSX, I installed Bootcamp instead. Why those folk don't make their lives happier and easier is beyond me.

Hi, have you seen what the best selling game franchises are? I wish people wouldn't make things up. http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Best_selling_game_franchises
