Metroid Prime had a system like this; the game would load the room you're in and all adjacent rooms. But if you very quickly rushed two rooms over, you'd have to sit and wait for the second door to open because the game hadn't finished preloading it. More RAM might've allowed it to do so.

Well, here's hoping the new console will have more RAM, and that would help the old Wii games with this.

Yah you can see that in Oblivion pretty plainly. If there was more room for textures then the loading times would have been cut down a bit. Draw distance increased too probably. I did not know my 360 only had half a gig of memory. Wow.

I heard that having a large HD in a 360 the game gets stored on the hard drive for drastically reduced load times.

My goldfish has a 3 second memory - I win ;)

Seriously though it is amazing that both the 360 & PS3 can at times push out some lush looking games with such 'archaic' specs by today's standards.

Installing your games to th 360 HDD does indeed improve loading and in some instances can improve framerate and on 'unreal engine 3' based games dramatically improve texture load in.

Ironically Oblivion in the example given runs better on the PS3 where it was further optimized by the developers (due to a 12 month extra development time) despite having it having effectively less graphics memory due to the straight 256/256 split.

The interesting thing will be to see how Skyrim shapes up on the current gen hardware as I suspect it's going to be a lot more resource hungry than Oblivion was.

It's not really that amazing when you consider they are only running at 30 FPS most times, and often at a resolution less than 1280x720. A cheap PC could pull off those results. Can't wait to see the Cafe though, not long now :D

well it helps the 360 is a deticated only to gaming so they do not need as much ram.

Now just remember how old the 360 is. It came out in what 2005. Back then 512 was entry level for a computer so quite a bit for game console. Remember the specs at the time were great. 360 is just well been around for a while. All of the makers push the limits on their current gen consoles as they wanted to milk as much money out of them as possible.

WiiU we copy Ipad

We have near Xbox 360 & PS3 graphics.... So 5 - 6 years late to the table

We have a touch screen controller that can connect to you TV for HiDef just like the iPad.....

And yet we still have the nerve to thrust the word Innovation into every other sentence and fill up our entire show with testimonials rather than specifications, prices and facts.....

Nintendo e3 Fail IMHO.... Very disappointed.

Maybe if you weren't a fanboy?

It's a new console.

Nothing Mircosoft showed made me interested in getting an Xbox or a Kinect.

Nothing Sony showed made me glad I have a PS3, make me want their motion controller, or whatever their new PSP is called.

Nintendo made me maybe interested in a 3DS after the price goes down and it finally gets some games.

But I definitely want to the new Wii

hideous

it's like they are afraid of apple, sony and MS and tried to make something with a bit of each one. like Frankenstein. the controller is like a tablet and it has violent games to appeal to hardcore gamers

microsoft will wipe the table with the x-box 720 which is probably close to completion

i want a game console, blu ray, and IPTV all in one. so far MS seems to be the one to deliver

Overall I'm most excited about the upcoming 3DS stuff. Kid Icarus did not interest me at all until that trailer, same for Skyward Sword. They just looked so dull in their old vids and didn't really "show the game" or the world they take place in. And then there's Mario Kart, free Pokedex app, Mario 3DS...

Can't wait for those!

And 2 new Smash Bros games? Perfect! My stomach literally dropped when they announced that.

WiiU certainly has a daft name but that hardware tech demo was gorgeous. And if all those games are running in 1080p, then wow (well partially. PC's have been beyond that res for years. But at least it's a huge step above the current gen consoles). Still not sure about the hardware but I love the sound of what it does, especially since I live in a busy house with gaming hardware connected to the main TV.

Yeah. I'm looking forward to it. Controller looks cumbersome but also looks like it might do some great stuff.

(Microsofts even was just boring. It's as if they didn't want to go to E3 but were too polite to turn down the invitation. Too much Kinect and Move emphasis on MS+Sony events. Vita is a definite buy.)

I'm not a fanboy in the slightest. If you posted in this section over the last 6 years or so you would realise that ;). However immediately trying to assassinate someone because they are unimpressed seemingly paints you as one.

I'm a gaming fan who is extremely disappointed in the wii u announcement other than the brief glimpse of Zelda on the system.

Oh and unlike you I actually do have a 3DS ;)

The wii u controller looks bulky, cumbersome and cheap. It looks just like the myriad of 'educational' kids toy electronic things produced in china and given to kids at Christmas by 'console fearing' parents, leaving them extremely disappointed.... (those Leapstar electronic learning devices).

That wasn't a new Zelda it was just a concept showing the potential of the new console.

I have been here for almost two years, almost all your comments in the console section drip with 360 fanboy.

I like Nintendo's strategy, offer an affordable system, that appeals to the masses and offers multiple ways to play games. The Wii being underpowered doesn't change the fact that I have more favorite games for Wii this gen than my PS3. That's why I'm not interested in Uncharted 3, sold Killzone 3 after two weeks, and the only PS3 exclusive that had lasting appeal to me was GT5. But I am still playing Galaxy 2, Donkey Kong Returns, and Goldeneye 007.

But for you to simply label "Nintendo E3 Fail" using superficial and shortsighted reasons is fanboyism....

Looks can be deceiving. Especially when something is brand new and we know little about it. It has almost another full year till it is released. How about learning a little more about it before you jump to conclusions. Unless you're mind was made up about Nintendo long before E3

You need to relax fella...Nintendo showed us a controller that they didn't explain properly and just forget about the specs of the damn console itself then proceed to show us footage of 360 versions of games...seriously?

I'm sorry but maybe Nintendo should of just hold off a bit because they didn't seem ready to showcase it....Reggie didn't want to answer questions about the damn thing...That tool from gametrailers put him on the hot seat and he weasel out of all the questions.

"This year is not about WiiU" shoulda waited until they were ready to reveal the thing properly.

I'm interested in it but Nintendo E3 was "meh"

Bless

What he said.

I can't see a single reason as to why this controller should be fun to use.. The Wii Sports golf example was just hilariously stupid in my opinion..

Sure, there will be some great uses for the screen, such as multiplayer stuff on the same screen - But I expect them to be very few.

I'm far from a 360 fanboy, i play my ipad, ds's and ps3 more that 360 ;) I'm a gaming fanatic - not a platform addict in the slightest.

Nintendo strategy affordable system ? You are screaming like a fan boy with delusion now ?

Seriously the 3DS even though I bought one - is extremely overpriced, especially given the NGP (PS RI-VITA) price point announcement.

And lets think for a second, do you really think that 6" Touchscreen controller is going to be cheap to replace or add a second module. Any 'pricing strategy' is a commercial one to fleece customers for as much €$£ as they can afford.

Oh I can probably guarantee - I'll own the new console before you ;) even though I'm a 360 fanboy :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Edit : I stick by my it looks cheap and bulky in regards to the controller. I've watched all the videos's it just looks very bulky. How small (childrens) hands are supposed to hold and operate it let alone an adult.

Well they were neither impressed with the demo shown like myself

The first, simply called "HD Experience," featured a hawk soaring through a traditional Japanese setting including cherry blossom trees and a temple. Graphically the scene was far better than Wii, of course, but I wasn't impressed at all with the quality of the textures or aesthetic design. For something that was supposed to demonstrate the power of the system, this particularly sequence failed to impress.

And again like myself they were impressed only by the Zelda demo

I wasn't able to control Link, but the battle between him and Gohma that I saw was breathtaking nonetheless. Between changing the lighting, camera controls and even the tablet's display, this demo above all the others proved how Nintendo franchises might benefit from increased power. This was gorgeous stuff.

So your defense article basically agrees with me. Yet I'm still a fanboy.

Is Hater more fitting?? :D

No. I dislike the the new design, not hate ;)

Aesthetically what the feck is happening with the off centered power button in the Engadget hands on? From a design perspective that is just wrong.

Really makes me think that Nintendo may have rushed out the hardware a bit too soon, before aesthetic refinements have been made. It's looking like proto-type hardware rather than final revision.

That looks different than this official Nintendo release.....

The case its in may be warping the perspective.

Edit: it is, the shadow is from a hole so you can turn it off and on. Also the console has almost a year till release, I'm sure they are allowed to tweak something if they want....

Remember the PS3 Boomerang?

Well yeah it's prototype hardware, considering it's not coming out until next year. It's not the button that's off centre, it's the hole in the kryptonite/adamantium alloy casing that's off (see the lock above). I would imagine that the Sync button will be hidden by the time the final design rolls around.
