If this is the future of gaming, I do not want it. :(

Some of the stuff was kinda nifty for a second (like the golf ball on the ground)...but really only for a second. Such is the life of a gimmick. It's kind of how I feel about the back touch pad on the PSVITA as well. They'll probably thinking of some neat stuff to do with it...but will it really improve the gaming experience?

Overall, it really seems to me they feel very threatened by Apple, they've taken some very obvious cues from them.

That looks different than this official Nintendo release.....

The case its in may be warping the perspective.

Edit: it is, the shadow is from a hole so you can turn it off and on. Also the console has almost a year till release, I'm sure they are allowed to tweak something if they want....

Remember the PS3 Boomerang?

Well yeah it's prototype hardware, considering it's not coming out until next year. It's not the button that's off centre, it's the hole in the kryptonite/adamantium alloy casing that's off (see the lock above). I would imagine that the Sync button will be hidden by the time the final design rolls around.
:apple:

Now you say its the protective isplay case around it I can see it, the way the shadow was cast really threw me. It makes it look like the unit itself has some weird protuberence.

I actually like the main unit design wise even if I'm not sold on the controller as yet, but there is plenty of time before it's release.

I dig it as well, just a modest looking device, although I wish it was Black like most of my other electronics.

My biggest concern about the controller is how fragile it is. Will it be able to withstand a few NerdRage tantrums? And if it can't how expensive will it be too replace. But in hindsight, the DS could take a pretty decent beating, and I'm sure it's based on the same tech.

Who isn't? Every company out there has their version of the Iphone or their version of the IPad, and if they don't they will eventually. It's not about being threatened it's using the tech people know and expect.

Wonder what the cost will be for a second controller

I can't imagine it being that bad. Ontop of a basic Wii controller is has- camera, mic and 2x analogue sticks. Both of which aren't too expensive. And a non-multitouch touchscreen and wifi adapter. I reckon £50 RRP.

hideous

it's like they are afraid of apple, sony and MS and tried to make something with a bit of each one. like Frankenstein. the controller is like a tablet and it has violent games to appeal to hardcore gamers

microsoft will wipe the table with the x-box 720 which is probably close to completion

i want a game console, blu ray, and IPTV all in one. so far MS seems to be the one to deliver

you mean sony.

Here are two questions...
1) I have not seen the Wii U talked about with more than one of those big / cool / random / expensive / awesome controllers. Will it be able to support more than one at a time? All the other demos show that primary controller w/ other controllers being used at the same time.
2) Is there a sensor bar that we need to put above/below our TV? I haven't seen mention of that yet either - curious if anyone knows!

I would be very surprised if it only supported one WiiU controller at a time and if you want to use the Wii controllers w/it you'll need a sensor bar.

Also....am I the only one who immediately thought of the movie "Kung Pow" when he first read the console's name out loud? :D

Looks cool. I'll be pre-ordering for sure. I've loved my Wii to pieces and had some great times with my friends. The demos had on the floor have a lot of potential. Should be some fun times ahead.

edit: can't believe it's been so long since the wii released......

I haven't watched the keynote, so this is just based off what I saw on liveblogs.

Things I like about the WiiU:
- Play a game on the TV, and then play the same game on the controller if needed. Not sure on the range though, same room? House?
- Screen on a controller, especially when it can display something different to the main screen (maps, inventory etc).
- Backwards compatible, but does that include GameCube?

Things I don't like:
- The stupid name. Don't Nintendo learn?
- Size of the controller. I'm sure you could make it smaller and keep the same features. If we can have iPads, then it can be done.
- Attempting motion controls with a fat controller? Err, no.
- Probable cost of extra controllers. The bundle itself may be reasonable (£250?), but another controller will be £100+

Things I'm not sure on:
- HD graphics. Yes, glad you caught up Nintendo, but until there are firm details as to how well WiiU runs, and what resolution etc. then I'll hold judgement. Worried that it'll be current for a few years and then get battered in to the ground by the next Xbox and PlayStation. Yes, I know graphics aren't everything, but they're important.
- Use of Wii accessories. So one person plays with a Wii Remote, and somebody else with the WiiU screen...thing, surely that gives totally different experiences, with one being inferior. Then you go back to the cost of the WiiU controller.
- Games. Okay, we'll get some good first party, but is it going to just do a Wii and end up with shovelware after a while?

There's one promo shot that clearly shows a sensor bar above the TV. My assumption is that use of Wii controllers still needs this.

New details:

In another report, Nintendo confirmed something Smash Bros fans certainly won’t be pleased to hear about: the Wii U will not support GameCube controllers.

A Nintendo representative divulged further intel to CVG, confirming that the controller and the console will be sold as one unit, and you won’t get a option to the buy the controller as a standalone product.

Additionally, he mentioned that multiplayer titles being developed for the Wii U are only being designed to accommodate one Wii U controller, while other players will have to use the Wiimote.

Umm....some strange decisions they are making there, especially the "only one WiiU-Mote" thing. Maybe they aren't final?

Not really. Think about the price of this thing.. I expect Nintendo to make a loss, or come out just even with this console. The specifications for the WiiUmote are slightly lower than an iPad, and that thing costs 500$.. No sane people would spend 300$ on a controller, especially not 3 more for multiplayer battles.

Okay, that's just dodgy. Using PS3 and 360 footage as samplers, without telling the audience? Pre-rendered footage is bad enough, but this is just wrong.

Nintendo can blather about how it'll look the same, or "output in 1080p" all they want, but use your own damn footage. This is like a car maker saying "Our car will do 0-60 in 4 seconds, but we've not made it, so here's a picture of an F1 car doing it instead."

Also, output in 1080p is not the same as being native. The PS3 and 360 output in 1080p as well, but a lot of games upscale from 720p or even lower in some cases.

Umm...you don't really think it's strange that in local multiplayer games, ONLY ONE person can use a WiiUMote, everyone else has to use a Wiimote??

Your friends could bring their own WiiUMotes when they come over, you know?

I think it is extremely limiting and eliminates the potentially cool possibilities of everyone having their own screen showing player-specific content. But maybe that is just me. :)

There is a big difference between a tablet, like the iPad, and the WiiUmote. The iPad is a stand alone, fully functioning device, while the WiiUmote is basically a 'dummy terminal' that must be in constant communication w/the WiiU console to function.

Maybe developers haven't had kits long enough to get out some decent screens? The Bird and Blossom demo was used running Wii-U hardware in real time, as was the Zelda tech Demo. They've got a year to get things ready and show what it can do....

so? There are very few native 1080P games on 360 and PS3. Do you really choose games on that fact? I don't understand the issue. 1080P is 1080P. My gaming TV will only display 720P anyway. The Big TV does 1080P though.

I think the fact that the Sync button is uncovered is significant. Maybe they expect and encourage a lot of Syncing of controllers?

it's a single touch screen with some speakers, a mic, and a camera. It has a gyro and an accelerometer. There is really not much to it. There are $30 cell phones with more tech. The only significant thing about it is the 6.2" screen.

I don't mind the controller too much; if the system hits in the $250 range it should be a good buy. Assuming the specs are in the 1-2x XBox 360 range, that's the price range it should fall to. Hopefully the controllers aren't too expensive.

However, it's useless for competitive Smash if there's no wired controller option :(

Real Racing 2 is going to have wireless dual screen support as soon as iOS 5 ships.
I'm sure with the iOS 5 mirroring, more iPad games are going to support this.
