No 3-year option for AppleCare for M5 Air (resolved)

Just went to add AppleCare for my recent M5 Air laptop purchase, but the 3-year option is 'currently unavailable'.

Not sure what to do - the single year option is available, but with talk of the new AppleCare One service I'm not sure whether to hold-off for that - does anyone know when it'll be available here in the UK, or what the issue is with the 3 year option?

Sorry, I meant the new AppleCare One (edited original post).

Phoned Apple and the AppleCare team don't work weekends, so will check with them on Monday.

I'll add the single-year option if the 3-year is still not available, just wondering if they're getting ready to transfer to the AppleCare One system.

On the US Apple store, you have the option of both when purchasing an Air - so it won't be one or the other. If and when AppleCare One comes to the UK, it should be simple enough to transition any existing agreements over. (They would have had to do that in the US).

What happens to the ability to do monthly/annual coverage until cancelled if you were to sell the machine in say 14 months?

Does that ability stay with the machine?

Only until it expires. It’s not “transferable” to the new owner, so they won’t be able to renew.

In USA they could buy AppleCare One if they qualify, but that’s it.

Ah ok, cheers. I'll see what they say on Monday and see if we're going to get the new plan here in the UK. I've got two weeks left to decide, if we don't get the option by then I'll just go for the standard year, and then hopefully transition if we're offered the new plan.

Bummer.
So AC+ is basically only really for the first owner of a given device, is that basically the situation?

Assuming the "first owner of the given device" is the same person who has logged into an Apple Account on the device and purchases AC+ before the AC+ purchase window expires. I am unable to verify, but I recall reading 3-yr AC+ is still available, you have to call Apple Care/Support to get it.

Any idea how much it is for a Macbook Air M5?

I have a few days left. I'd like to add only a version of AC+ that can be transferred/go with the machine as I will likely upgrade in under 2 years. It's a very nice peace of mind benefit when reselling.

I don't know about the UK but you have to call Apple (in the US) in order to purchase a 3-year plan. You can do it in the US. They just don't advertise it or make it easy.

£229 here in the UK for 3 years, or £79.99 for a single year.

The 3 year option is available again via my device, so guessing it was a 'maintenance' thing.

All things considered I might just go for the single year, as the 3 year option is only (currently) a £10 saving.

After the initial purchase of 3 yrs AC+ with my then new 2023 MBP, I have just renewed for a year as that was all that was available. The only option for me was pay in advance for one year or monthly. This is in Germany.

I'm not sure this is right. I believe it is based on the serial number of the machine not on the original purchaser. It is not uncommon for someone to sell their Mac with Applecare still active. Maybe I'm wrong but I think it is based on the machine.

I think the initial buyer has the option of 3 yrs AC+ and after this runs out, only yearly (or monthly payment) insurance is possible? I could be wrong, perhaps it varies by country but I only had a yearly option recently, 3 yrs after both the initial purchase of the machine, as well as AC+ bought at point of sale.

Edit: and you're correct. AC is indeed transferrable.

Good call, especially with a laptop. You know, when I bought my M2 Max (mainly tethered), 3 months later I drowned it with a sugary drink. Prior I was babying it, being so careful..overcareful. Stare at a pothole long enough and you'll land right in it.

Basically everything needed to be replaced except the lower plate. Boy I was glad to have AC+.

Doesn't it get backdated to align with the purchase date anyway? Or perhaps even the activation date?

IMO £10 savings but having to pay 2 years extra in advance, isn't worth it. But that's splitting hairs, really.

A benefit of annual is you don't have to remember to renew it, if you plan to keep the Mac more than 3 years. But again splitting hairs.
