Though while we're on the subject, I'd be a hell of a lot more interested in getting a GTX 260 Core 216 working than a 4870.

Kext are rumored to be available when snow leopard comes out, till then the best supported NVidia Setup is 9800GX2(on certain m/b's).

Till then it's 8800GT if you want everything working 100% and until we can get rom's from a legitimite 4870 from apple, I'm sure there will be bugs.

Very interesting… any idea if it'll work on a Mac Pro, or just Hackintosh?

Not without flashing roms. Expect to see people flashing non-apple stamped 4870 relatively soon, well as soon as 4870 hits the streets and the enthusiast are having their way with them.

Also if the OP in that thread was running dual 8800GT I'm almost certain you will be seeing dual 4870's soon as well.

Also in my case I had to flash my 8800GT due to some new kext (related to new quick time features) in 10.5.6 that supports upstream hdcp, or something along those lines.

It's all a flash issue. The 4870's run just fine on PCIE 1.0/1.1 on PC's, compatibility isn't an issue on the card's side

I believe, going by Apple's actions in the past, that they consider the EFI32-based Mac Pros unsupported by any new hardware, thus we will never see an EFI32-compatible 4870 from Apple.

As in the past, Apple will suggest that if you want to add a Radeon 4780 to your older Mac Pro, it can be done for the low price of $2699.00.

Now, its entirely possible that ATI themselves will release one to retail, but if that were to happen I doubt a mini display port connector would be on it.

This is exactly what happened with the 3870 and I think will happen with the 4870. Though it might be as you said about the ports. And it might take a little while for them to release it. (myself, I'm happy to be rid of the terrible quality control of the ATI cards, and have the option of adding a second DVI display :p)

This is the exact same conversation we all had last january. remember?

Everyone who keeps saying it has anything to do with pci-e 2 is just as wrong now as they were last year. go back and read the 200 page thread and don't fill this one up with nonsense. We all know it's an issue with EFI.

The only silver lining to this story is that ATI may actually take the inititive to produce this card for gen 1 mac pros. They did, after all, release a HD 3870 on their own accord that does in fact work with the gen 1 mac pro. The only reason I didn't purchase one myself is because it came out about a week after apple fixed the problem with the 8800gt.

So I guess if we're all really lucky ATI will come to our rescue.

Oh ffs, not again... Apple, when will you learn?

I totally understand if there's a valid reason why older hardware must be left behind, but my first-gen Mac Pro is still going strong and there's no reason a new card can't be made compatible. I just want a mini DisplayPort card (or maybe 2) so I can connect two 24" Cinema Displays. Apple hate my Mac Pro so much they're willing to close off a huge business opportunity from me. \o/

so the 4870 should be supported for hackintoshes soon then right?
I was gonna be in the market for a mac pro later this year, but with this slap in the face 'upgrade' I might just save my money and build myself one.

Apple made the 8800GT for the original Mac Pro, it took them a few months but they got there. I'm sure Apple or ATI will come through.

This is the same company that when the day iPhone 3G was released, they no longer carried any accessories for the old iPhone.

Only after they were dragged kicking and screaming... you'd have thought they'd have learned from that experience.

I'm surprised Apple does not install a self destruct chip into each Mac Pro that goes off after the 3 year mark.

You nailed it. They just didn't bother with EFI32 for the reasons you stated.

Well, is sounds strange, given that previous ATI cards used a EBC (EFI ByteCode) firmware that works identically on 32 and 64-bit EFI systems ...

I kinda doubt that they just went back to a 64-bit only native firmware (except maybe for technical reasons like EBC compiler or instruction set limitations, or bytecode size limitations).

I think we shouldn't make too many assumptions, and instead wait for someone to dump this card's firmware so that we can know what's inside without a doubt.

No, Nvidia were going to create the card, Nvidia backed out, so Apple had to do it themselves.

And ATI then came out with the 3870 which ran on both the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Mac Pro's, just as I'm sure will happen this time.

To you guys saying that it is incompatible with the older Mac Pros, that is BS.

PCI-E is backwards compatible to all versions that run electrically at the same speed.

In other words, a Radeon 4870 will work with PCI-E 1.0, PCI-E 1.1, and PCI-E 2.0. And thats the bottom line.

confused

I am not sure about this, but isnt the 4870 an old washed up video card. I thought there were cards out there that are twice as powerful and can be linked together. Just wondering thats all.

The 4870 is the card that can be linked together.
