I turn off data when traveling international. I was recently in Canada and could text free (included), but data was pricey, so shut it off when not needed.

I also go to France often enough that I bought an Orange France Domino for wifi and run all my data through that, but can still get calls on my US phone number. I just shut off cellular data and avoid VZW int'l data charges everywhere in France. :)

I'm still on iOS 6. So, am I to understand it's not possible to shut off cellular data on iOS 7?!

No it is possible. There is now something called control center that allows quick and easy access to certain settings toggles (Bluetooth, wifi, airplane mode, do not disturb, and orientation lock). None of them are cellular data controls but the poster would like it to customizable so they could select this as an option. To do it now you have to do it as before through by accessing the settings>phone>cellular data switch and then changing it there just as before.

It's not the DATA use which is consuming the battery

If the OP's like me, I live on the outskirts of a town where my 3G signal is around 1 or 2 dots while in the house and sometimes this switches from 3G to GPRS, its this constant automatic switching from 3G to GPRS and back that depletes the battery, as the phone searches for the optimal service.

I for one, turn off DATA when I get back to my house and purely use WIFI and a better strength GPRS signal so I would welcome the DATA Toggle option in CC.

I also never turn off cellular or WiFi, when I'm out of home, then i will use cellular, when I'm at home it will use WiFi. Didnt see any huge battery drain. For me don't need at all cellular toggle because I dont turn on/off every 10 minutes.

To avoid roaming charges when you are abroad and want to access data only when wifi is available.

So when you are abroad, turn off cellular and thats all? if you dont want to get charged for cellular o_O

Absolutely, when traveling from country to country, switching it off is a must to avoid mega bills.

As said, it still allows, call, sms and wifi- that have no charge if the phone is idle. Data happens all the time in the background.

Cellular data has a big impact on battery life. Moreover, in some european countries data plans are short, and that may be another reason.

I don't switch it on and off many times, but when I do, is to save battery. And it saves a lot.

Not necessarily. They could offer all the top row of switches to be customizable (the whole thing doesn't need to be (or maybe offer two rows). You get to choose the switches in settings and a preset icon is placed into the switch area within the control center to represent your chosen switch selections.

Customisability is one thing, but at the moment, all of the toggles in Control Centre are applicable to all iOS 7 devices.

Toggles like Cellular Data, 3G, Data Roaming, Personal Hotspot and so on wouldn't apply to all devices or carriers - even different plans by carriers, so Apple would need to have a complicated mechanism in place to deal with that.

So why can't you just turn off data roaming?

Roaming charges are different depending on the country. Cheap in France, very expensive in Switzerland, and overall very very expensive outside of the EU. So I switch data roaming only when I go to some countries. Would be nice to do this in control center but I'm fine to go to settings.

I personally wouldn't want it there, things in the control centre have a habit of being turned off or on without noticing it's been done. Safer to have it a few levels down, and not that big a deal to get to.

Clearly the current toggles would remain the default. In turn, you'd only be able to customize those toggles based on the features available with your phone which I contend would not be difficult to implement. The iOS is clearly already smart enough to not display certain options based on the version of your iPhone in addition to your carrier. The customization options would be no different only showing and allowing for selecting toggles for Control Center that apply in your case.

Apple has never provided that type of customization in any area of iOS. I would be absolutely shocked if they ever let users customize the toggles.

Some people with limited cellular data plans would benefit from being able to turn it off, not only to save battery, but to minimize data usage when syncing data or updating apps. This is especially important in iOS 7, where apps are updated automatically.

you can manage cellular usage at settings>cellular and you can turn off auto updating while on cellular

I'd say use Siri and say "Open Cellular Data Settings"

... but Siri doesn't work half the time.

The fact that you can manage it in the settings doesn't eliminate the fact that it would be beneficial to have quick access to the on/off switch in the Control Center. It would be far more useful than accessing the Bluetooth on/off in the control center, as cellular data affects battery life to a greater degree than does Bluetooth.

How is this possible?
I bet so many users always turn this function on/off many times during the day, so it's need a fast access..

Do you think we can see this data cellular toggle in iOS 7.1 maybe?

Btw:
I don't need bluetooth.
AirDrop is also useless, you can share stuff via iMessage.

Why can't we personalize what we want in control center?

I really don't get this, Apple has the most brilliant ideas but I really don't get those restrictions. I hope they get out from this "close mind" condition.

How do I iMessage myself on my iPad from my iPhone?
Bluetooth is great with my Jambox.
I do agree some amount of customization would be nice- I rarely use the calculator and when I did, I don't think of control center.I use the timer, but again, I never think to use control center.

the only point to turning off cellular is when you're on wifi, other than that it makes absolutely no sense. pretty much becomes a watch at that point

weird
