The new iPad reverses the trend of making the iPad look and work like jumbo iPhones.

That’s disappointing. Was hoping for the 10.2 with the new pro design.

Oh well guess il keep hold of my air 2 another year then. Didn’t think I’d have this for 6 years.

They need to simplify by having an entry level line with TouchID and Bezel, and then a Pro line with FaceID and full screens.

iPad Mini 7.9”
iPad 9.7”
iPad Pro Mini 8.5”
iPad Pro 11”
iPad Pro Max 12.9”

Come to think of it... that would really translate well into the iPhone line too. An entry level line of iPhones, and then a Pro line of iPhones

iPhone mini 4”
iPhone 4.7”
iPhone Max 5.5”
iPhone Pro Mini 5”
iPhone Pro 5.8”
iPhone Pro Max 6.5”
Seriously? The current lineup is crazy as it is, and you want to add more models to it to “simplify” the line?

What are you smoking?

Without a laminated screen, I'll be keeping both my iPad mini 4s. They are only used for a single app (ForeFlight), and are getting to be a bit slow, but there is no other iPad that fits on the yoke of the airplane I fly.
I’d be interested to hear your take on the display tech. Have you seen the $329 iPad? The display is non-laminated and doesn’t have the anti-reflectance coating, maybe other differences too (not sure).

Would that be a dealbreaker for pilots? It seems like anti-glare properties would be important but I don’t have any relevant experience to support that supposition.

So the cheaper iPad has a headphone jack (which the pro doesn’t) and touch ID which I found to be more flexible than Face ID.

Crazy that the pro doesn’t have as many features as the iPad

One has Touch ID and one has Face ID. so those features cancel each other out. I agree a headphone jack on the pro would be nice. However, that’s not a big deal. A simple adapter solves that. Oh and in all honesty, lighting and USB-C both deliver better quality sound than the old 3.5 jack. I like personally prefer the better sound. When I’m not editing videos or podcast then I just use my wireless AirPods or Bose. Headphone jack isn’t as much of a feature as it used to be.

Just update the iPad Air 2 with latest CPU and 4gb RAM, Bluetooth 5 and upgrade the cameras to current day expectations. That is, make the specs current. Simple. No need for Apple pencil support.

"and it will also still have a headphone jack."

New thought. I think now Apple is just 'stirring the pot'... its only a matter of time when the headphone jack will disappear.. There is nothing on the iPad that keeps them from using Airpods that an iPhone X can only do. Except more people somehow prefer the old style on a tablet...

I'm surprised

I hope the mini 5 also gets an A11 with 3-4GB of RAM and a 256GB option. An A10 with a paltry 2GB of RAM would be a slap in the face by Apple.

A slap in the face AND a non sale. Guess we should just prepare for A10/2gb to avoid disappointment.

changes to save costs on materials, higher pricing, higher profit margins..

change = $
And? So Apple should just change the design because you want to?

What do you do with the mini that requires an A12/A11?

If the price point is below the current 2018 iPad, even an A10 will be a huge upgrade over my A7 mini 2, and at a lesser price than what I paid for my mini 2 back then.

In New Zealand the iPad mini 4 costs $659 nzd ($450 usd) which is absolutely criminal for 4 year old tech. Especially as the standard iPad is $539 nzd.
Well the mini is 128GB. So the standard iPad that’s comparable is $699 nzd. Also, those prices include your 15% GST. So the $659 nzd is really USD390—cheaper than here in the states. The $539 nzd standard iPad converts to USD319; again, cheaper than what we pay here which is USD329. Finally, 128GB standard iPad is USD429 here, but you pay only the equivalent of USD414.

re: the “criminal” pricing, you have to keep in mind Apple utilizes a life-cycle pricing model. So take that $659 iPad mini that stayed the same price for 4 years. The other option would have been a graduated decrease over that time period. But that would have looked something like this: $800 in year 1, $700 in year 2, then $600, and finally $500 in year 4.

Instead, Apple prefers to maintain a constant price. So they basically average out the price over the planned life of the model. That means early in the life cycle they’re actually under-running their target profit, knowing that by the end of the life cycle they’ll be overshooting it.

The main reason Apple chooses to price that way is to keep customers from being “trained” to hold off on purchases to wait for lower prices in the future. Instead, the customer knows he might as well buy it today if he’s going to buy eventually. There’s no point in waiting; there won’t be any discount to be had just by holding off until next month or next year.

Another reason for keeping prices constant is that it helps to maintain higher resale values. That iPad you paid $659 for three years ago still costs $659 new... maybe it’s still worth $475 used, which is almost 75% of what you paid. The alternative would have you paying $800 three years ago, only to see it’s now worth only $400—50% of what you originally paid—since it can now be bought new for $600.

People often don’t like to hear that there’s actually a good reason why prices don’t drop during the lifecycle as models age; they’ll claim that’s just an excuse for Apple not dropping prices. But it is a fact.

Surely they’ll just re-purpose the iPad Air with a newer processor & Touch ID v2?

The R&D decreases year by year and the share price increases in a similar fashion. ‘Don’t make sense. But it works. So why would you break a ‘winning’ formula? “If the mugs want to buy the logo - let ‘em!” - T C

I have an iPad Air 1st gen at the moment, been looking at the 329 ipad for a while but been waiting for them to stick an A11/12 in it. Hopefully that happens now

I’m looking to upgrade my iPad mini 2 to a 9.7” device for casual use and adobe Lightroom image editing. Only holding off for the new one as I’d hate to buy the outgoing model so close to a refresh.

I’m really hoping for a RAM increase, CPU update (A12 would be nice but I suspect we will see A11) and pencil 2 support. Entry model at 64gb would be nice too.

R&D decreasing year by year? No, exactly the opposite. R&D has actually been increasing in a rather dramatic fashion since Tim Cook became CEO in 2011. That year, the R&D spend was $2.4 billion. Here’s what’s happened since then:

So R&D spending increased from about $200 million per month in 2011 to about $1.2 billion per month last year—a 500% increase in total, over the last seven years.
