On June 1 2010, AT&T CEO Donovan had this to say in his online company column:

  • "And we finalized plans to further upgrade 3G network software beginning at the end of this year, moving to HSPA+, which will offer another 3G speed boost when paired with Ethernet backhaul"

and before that, on May 18, he had said:

  • "We're now ready to announce the next step in this process: late this year, we plan to upgrade our mobile broadband network to HSPA+, the next generation of our 3G platform."

.
Must be summer vacation. Way too many rude, ignorant and immature posters all of a sudden.

I personally am a little bummed, but not a show stopper.

Big question, why do you need HSPA+? Besides, HSPA+ would go to waste seeing as how there are capped data plans.

Cuz I want it. Shouldn't matter why. All this thread was about was being dissappointed...nothing more. Why is everyone crucifying the guy?

Now if this was the 3rd thread on it, I'd be complaining. :p

"Cuz I want it." Isn't a reason to make it disapointing. Because it's pointless t ask for something there is no use for in more than 95% of the world.

Sure it is. Nobody has to justify to anybody here why they are dissappointed. I need NO reason and it's not up to you if I feel dissappointed or not.

It's not a big deal. Why are people making it a big deal?

Because it's going to be in the US and many people would like faster 3G service. That's why.

Example....
Well, I live in BC, Canada with a 5 GB data plan in a small town (30,000 people) and my area is covered with HSPA+, as is every city around me!

It'd be nice but it's certainly not a deal breaker for me!

My "unlimited" was an exaggeration so I should take it back.

Sweden, Finland, other European countries, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea have HSPA+

What I don't get is, why you want your phone to be limited, in like 1-3 years, in speed ? Because I'd like a phone that uses fast networks, whenever possible.
Just because HSPA+ is not super covered doesn't mean it's not necessary, I'd like to use my phone at least more than 3+ years. I just wish the iPhone 4 was future-ready (so I don't have to keep buying new phones, but we know Apple's evil plan).

Also HSPA+ won't go to waste even if you have capped data plans, why ?
Because you get things done faster. Just because the network is faster doesn't mean you have to load "the internet". It just means, that while doing internet-related stuff, won't take as long as it "used" to anymore.

I'll still get the iPhone as it is no deal breaker for me, but I'd still like to have HSPA+ on my iPhone.

Check out the Global foot print of DT (Deustch Telecom) Which happens to be larger than the major providers in the US and tell me again how HSPA + doesn't matter.

HSPA + is important in a way because it reaches some of the same speeds that LTE (Which technically isn't 4G) does. So this would help AT&T Stave off people who were going to switch for VZW for LTE. And someone mentioned that people wouldn't benefit because they don't offer unlimited data anymore.

That's BS. Lots of people are keeping their unlimited data plans and lots of people signed up all the way till the 7th. And also there will be alot of people going over their data alotment as well on the tiered plans.

Just because you think HSPA + May or may not be important doesn't mean there is no need for it. Because your not seeing the big picture your only seeing the small narrow sketch

HSPA + could also improve quality for Facetalk to run over 3G

Exactly! Optus in Australia has one of the fastest networks in the world. More faster than anything we have here in the US. And yes i know AU is smaller than the US. But that excuse about landmass is getting pretty old. The US really needs to cut the tape and bureaucratic BS and shift in high gear.

But getting back to the subject at hand. Those other countries have higher data speeds than us in the US.

Is pretty funny reading these posts - wow there are lots of insular, ethnocentric people in the world...

I have been in three countries in the last 3 weeks - all three had HSPA+ available (for those that could get their hands on a decent device)

Like the OP, I was a little bummed. I've been using my 5 gb fully, tethering frequently (to iPad in the last couple of months, but before that to my notebook all the time). I loved the switch from dialup to 1 Mb. I loved going from 3 to 5 Mb. I really liked going to 10Mb. And a year ago, the bump from 10 to 50 Mb was awesome. I am really happy with the speeds on my iPhone for the last year+, but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't LOVE for it to be faster. Waiting is never fun, and listening to all these people telling the OP off ridiculous.. Get over yourself and realize that the world does not revolve around you.

I am in Japan and Canada a lot, and both have HSPA+. I would have loved to see it in the iPhone 4 as well. I am investigating Android, but still love my 3Gs and very likely will end up with the iPhone 4. I am going to get something in the next few weeks, and love having so many awesome choices.

Are you sure it doesent have hspa+ and apple isn't flaunting it arround...kinda like the 5th band for hsdpa/hsupa? Cause I'm seeing BLAZING fast speeds at my house.

Instead of flaming the OP, you should probably know that the USA is not the only country on this planet, and AT&T isn't the only network that carries the iPhone. There are many, many, many more networks around the world that carry the iPhone - and they also use HSPA+.

I love this forum, but why are there certain people on here that can't see out of the RDF, and feel it necessary to attack anyone who questions Apple's decisions? Remember, this is a forum.

I so agree. My network supports HSDPA+ and has speeds up to 23mbps but eff that if the iPhone can't even go that fast

Hspa+

What HSPA+ network did you plan on using it with? Not AT&T, seeing as they dont have one.

If AT&T does not have HSPA+ doesn't mean that the other side of the world does not have also... If yankie doesn't have HSPA+ capable iPhone, doesn't mean that iPhone for other market should not support HSPA+.

I think most of the people here only look at a smaller scale. It's just like you never look at what other country outside of US of A have.

In the end iPhone is meant for global market not for US of A alone. I'd rather have all the features in the phone now even if I'm not using it. But who know... you might have to travel to the other part of the world and their network is much better than the US of A?

AT&T is now testing HSPA+ in Dallas and Baltimore.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/DN-att_17bus.ART.State.Edition1.26bbd97.html

AT&T Inc. has begun testing its next-generation 4G wireless network in Dallas and Baltimore, a top company executive said Thursday at an industry conference in California.

John Stankey, president and chief executive of AT&T business solutions, said his company will spend $700 million this year on its 4G network, which relies on a technology called LTE. That amount will increase as Dallas-based AT&T begins a commercial rollout next year.

AT&T had said it would begin trials this year, but Thursday was the first time the company identified the trial cities.

While the 4G rollout begins, Stankey said, AT&T is also continuing to upgrade the speed of its 3G network, moving from a standard called HSPA 7.2 to HSPA+.

Anyone that thinks Apple is going to "Future proof" a phone must not know anything about the company they are buying phones from. When you buy an iPhone, it WILL be outdated in a year...thats the whole point. Apple holds back features to entice customers to upgrade. Fact.

The biggest complaint I can possibly have is NOT that the iPhone doesn't have HSPA+, nor any other shortcomings the iPhone may have.

It's that people do the research on the phone, see all the specifications and technical information, realize the shortcomings on paper, buy the phone anyway, and THEN complain about it on sites such as this, while knowing full well that what they're complaining about was public knowledge from the very beginning.

And that's the same for many posts here. There are still people coming onto MacRumors complaining about the antenna issue, when this was addressed in the few weeks immediately after the release.

Guys, please: take the iPhone for what it is and don't get your knickers in a bunch about nitpicky things.

HSPA+ and bigger display for iPhone

Yes, it is a deal breaker for me. I want a bigger display too. The current trend is 4" to 4.5" displays. I don't think Apple will budge on this. The main things that will probably make me jump ship to Android in the summer of 2011 are as follows:

  • no HSPA+ support on iPhone 4
  • no text reflow on iOS Safari web browser
  • no haptics for the screen on iPhone 4
  • fragile breakable glass sandwich design on iPhone 4
  • no Flash support for Apple mobile devices

I've stuck it out long enough. I think I'm just kidding myself thinking they will ever come around on these issues. Probably need to move on.

Is this a deal breaker for anyone else? They can't blame AT&T for this shortcoming.

Don't get me wrong, I am happy for many improvements, mainly:

Screen resolution
Processor
Camera (both of them)
Gyroscope

But it just seems to me that every year the competition gets closer and closer, and now they may even be on par or better depending on your needs.

I want a bigger screen, faster network and less big brother. I might have to make the switch to android soon...

  • no HSPA+ support on iPhone 4

Somehow I suspect by summer of 2011 the iPhone will support HSPA+. Heck AT&T just sent an e-mail to me today advertising 4G/HSPA+ so it is probably a safe bet we will see support from the iPhone this year. Of course your other issues with the iPhone will probably remain.

You mean the next version of the iPhone? Perahps an iPhone 4s or the 5?

I'm fairly certain the chipset in the iPhone 4 does not support HSPA+. That was determined long ago.

I think he is referring to the new to be released hardware that will support the faster HSPA+.

Yes, the current iPhone 4 will not support HSPA+ speeds. All iPhone 4 users will ever see is the HSDPA 7.2 and HSUPA 5.76 standards.
